  • I can't speak for Matty about updating the site.

Yes - we will be using a starting stack of 3,000 in chips.

  • my suggestion is that before you head down to the tournament on Sunday, make sure you give the Liberty Grand a call to ensure the tournament is happening. You don't want to come in from Waterloo, pay for parking, etc. to find out the tournament has been cancelled. 416-542-3789. I called them this morning and everything is a go as of Friday morning.

hahahahahahaha It's on like donkey kong, man!

Best of luck to those attending. I'm looking forward to reading the trip reports.
  • if it falls through, there is always the Nuttz WPT seat tournament at 3pm downtown Toronto on the Sunday.

That is where I always planned to go on September 23. Good luck to my four teammates and everybody else on Sunday.
  • Good luck to everyone playing, I am off to Cuba today for a week so I won't be there. Hopefully a forum member takes this down.

do you know if there is a cash game after the tournament? please PM me the new address as I have not heard back from Kevin. Cheers.
  • FYI, the email I received today still shows "Starting Chips: 2500". Can I drop by after my tournament to cheer on my teammates on their way to the final table? :)

You just want a shot at the all day buffet :)

There's an all day buffet? Hopefully lots of fish on the menu.

I'm shortly going to get going once I get my NFL betting out of the way. I hope there's wireless there so I can keep up to date on stuff.
  • Yep, I'm heading out shortly as well. See ya all there, the rest of you are all battling for a trip to the Canadian murder capital of the world!
  • I heard there were less than 300 players. Were there enough qualified dealers as I heard that they were looking to hire dealers at the last minute? What exactly was in the $300 gift bags?

I'd like one of those fabulous loot bags
  • Although I played awful yesterday, I have to say that 1deal did pull off a great event! There were 290+ players in attendance and the prizes promised (WPT seat, trip to mexico) were actually given out. Having to organize a 290 player tournament at one of the nices venues in Toronto was a great achievement. They did add the drink raffle at the last minute but the first prize given away was another trip to Mexico so it was definitely a good event. The gift bags were a little disappointing as the only thing worthwhile item was a $50 gift certificate to the Rosewater Supper Club. I do feel sorry for the people holding the wedding next door to the tournament as they were all dressed up to the max, and having to share the bathrooms with the poker tournament players is probably going to be an issue this morning for the LG. The players actually had to walk through the receiving area for the wedding as guests arrived. Pretty funny sight :) The dealers were good and bad. My first dealer didn't really know what she was doing when it came to making calls and relied on the players at the table to decide. The second dealer was excellent and he probably was from one of the casinos. Does anyone know who ended up winning? did anyone from the forum make it to the final table?

My final hand was brutal and I guess I was expecting more creative play which came back to haunt me: 100/200 its raised to 800 and I call in the SB with KQH. Flop comes AK3 rainbow. I check and the other player makes it 1,200. For some reason I think he is bluffing so I decide to call and take it down on the turn (although I don't have enough chips... another oversight). The turn is a 7 and I go all-in for 1,500 and he calls instantly and shows AK and I am dead in the water. Afterwards my only explanation for calling was I didn't expect him to bet on the flop with top two pairs and I didn't think he had the ace. Keep up the good work Matty and I'm not sure how you will top this last event.
  • like you pokerjah, I thought the event was good, the location was great and the prizes, at least for final table were quite good, with it obviously top heavy with the WPT seat and Mexico trip being 1 and 2. It definitely was funny (for us at least) to share the common hallway and bathrooms with the wedding crowd... Wonder how that will play out?
Like you Jah I went out much too early, probably around 58th, just after we went to 6 tables. I found the dealers much better than last time, with my first dealer being one of the best i have seen anywhere. The biggest issue was with the last minute change to the blind lengths as dictated by the venues demand that we be out by 11pm. Al had devised a real nice structure that would have run until around 1AM. I was helping him set up for registration when someone from the venue came up and told us we had to be out by 11, first Al had heard of it. Only thing he could do at that point was take a lot of time out of the lengths. Apparently Matty didn't know until then either. No idea who did the contracting with the venue but that person should be shot... Seems like that would be one of the first things on the contract....
  • Thanks for the great feedback guys. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and had a good time, sorry you couldn't win it, maybe next one.
Ya they told us last minute that we needed to be out by 11 so that was a dissapointment. I felt it was a great tourney with a great showing of all types of players. It was nice to finally put some faces to the forum. For those of you who weren't there Al did an amazing job, I dont think I saw him stop the entire night, he's a machine!!
The gift bags didn't have that much great stuff but they were all donated so it was expected that they wouldn't be amazing, but none the less it was free fellas.
Hope to hear from all of you in attendance, any suggesstions or comments please let me know, hopefully we can get another one real soon.
  • thanks Matty... who ended up winning?
  • Great Job to Matty, Al, Oliviera and the 1Deal crew.

Top notch job on the tourney and a great venue.., well done.

I think PokerJah and compuease covered off some of the same frustrations I had... we went from 400/800, 20min blinds to 500/1500, 15Mins. That VERY hand I'm UTG with JJ and $4K in the pot before anybody sees a flop... "I'm all-in" ... $14K to go.
    1 Caller in late position with $6K... he turns over 8 6 off!?! Flop 4 7 6 , turn 5...drawing dead.... WTF.
Spun and done shortly after that.... as I go to pickup a loot bag... the few that were left were all cherrypicked so nothing left.

So I left there thinking it was a huge waste of time.... but again, great organization on the part of 1Deal crew to get this done.

BTW ... there was no buffet... food and drinks were $$.
  • Thank you for the compliments from some of you that attended the tourney.

I think the 500/1500 level blew some people's minds, because they thought that the blinds were going up almost double, (and they think that the big blind must ALWAYS be double the small blind) but it wasn't true.

Levels 11 through 16 had the following costs each time you went around the table:

    11. 1900 (300/600 100 ante)
    12. 2700 (400/800 150 ante)
    13. 4000 (500/1500 200 ante)
    14. 6000 (1000/2000 300 ante)
    15. 8500 (1500/3000 400 ante)
    16. 12000 (2000/4000 600 ante)

So, the multipliers between levels were 1.5x, 1.48x, 1.5x, 1.42x, and 1.41x - about one and a half times the number of chips each level.

I do regret having to speed up the blinds, but as Geoff said earlier I was told about the 11 pm hard time about 15 minutes before we started registration. And I think my greatest justification for the blind schedule being the way it was was that the tournament ended 10 minutes before we had to be out of the hall.
  • All I can say Al is with what you were given to work with you pulled of a major success.. Very smooth and perfectly timed.. I enjoyed helping you before the tourney, even if only a little bit..
  • Matty:

Although I wasn't there as a player I thought the event overall was good. The venue was very nice and the tournament ran smoothly despite some last minute obstacles. Much of the credit for the tournament's success should go to Al who made adjustments very quickly and effectively.

My number one suggestion is to make things more transparent. For example, what charities exactly were involved? Was the money for food and drinks used for the charity?

Obviously you were able to attract a lot of people because of the top prize. Personally I would like to see a more even distribution of prizes.

    Sandy

P.S. Congratulations to Jenn who made it to the top 20 and was the last woman standing.
  • Congrats Jenn,

As Waltsfriend said I think the tourney ran smoothly for the most part. Blinds were a lot faster than I would have liked but I realize time constraints.

Given how fast the blinds were going up having competent dealers is a must. Our dealer was brutal to say the least and admitted it was only the 2nd time he dealt. He couldn't shuffle using a riffle and had no idea what the cut card was for. We got 8 hands per level. This meant (to me anyways) a very aggressive approach to this tournament. At 8 hands per level you don't get very many chances to accumulate chips.

Over all it was good to see some forum members, compuease, Al, Blazin 72, pokerjah and waltsfriend. And the fabulous lot bag may be worth 450 if I'm willing to shell out a grand using the gift certificates etc. I know some of the restaurants involved and an $80 certificate isn't going very far.
  • The pics and detials are up, go check them out and keep posted for our upcoming tourney
