I had a great meal at Hy's in Ottawa. Caesar salad and Chateau Briand followed by cheese cake. Lots of complimentary hot garlic toast of course to start. Sooo good. Can't wait to go back!

You guys can share that shit. I don't eat it, never have. Now a char broiled Harvey's burger YUMMY. Unfortunately as part of this challenge I am not eating meat. So I guess I won't be going there any time soon.
Same. Not tempted by McD's at all. (I DID have my first Big Mac in probably 3 years over the break though.)
My eating plan is very cool with meat (just no bun)!
Are people planning on posting intermediate home weigh in results? I'm gonna weigh myself once a week on Monday mornings and post it here. (Might encourage better weekend eating, haha!)
Any thoughts on the winning % for March? Maybe 8-12% but that is a lot for 10 weeks.
I'm aiming for somewhere between 20 and 25% by November but I may be dreaming in technicolor. That's really only 2lbs per week but I have to do it each and every week, which includes birthdays, family get togethers and vacations so I already know I'll miss my target a few of those weeks. I expect Brent will take the early lead but he has no discipline so I will catch him by November.
Yeah 20% is very optimistic on my end, even by June. I wouldn't be suprised if 10% takes down the March weigh in.
On a related note... Tried an "egg white and turkey sausage" breakfast sandwich from Tim's today, instead of the usual sausage and egg version. 2 bites in I was ready to give up the $120 and order something that doesn't taste like sadness... I'll try to hang in there.
i thought i'd help you guys a bit and give some delicious suggestions for healthy foods.
1) popcorn with just a little salt isn't that bad and it'll fill your stomach for a snack without the pointless calories. if you really need it, add a little coconut oil instead of butter.
2) mary's flax crackers are delicious and very healthy for you. you can get them from fortino's or costco. they even stay crunchy after heating them up.
3) dried lightly salted seaweed is also a great snack. you'd probably have to go to an asian grocery store although fortino's might have them. they are very tasty and surprisingly filling, plus they are very healthy for you. sadly, they go great with beer (which you should be avoiding right now).
4) hemp hearts are delicious and extremely healthy for you (although they are a little bit expensive). you can get them from fortino's. they go great on salads, on sandwiches, or even blended into your smoothie fruit drinks sort of thing (i know it sounds strange but you will not even taste them and still get the health benefits).
5) drink LOTS of water. like a ton of water. even one full glass before a meal and then just eat slowly and stop when you are full - this will help curb your appetite.
6) limit all your carbs (i'm reluctant to say no carbs because i don't think eliminating them completely is actually healthy, but for this bet it may okay as long as it is only for a few months). a lot of restaurants have gluten free alternatives that are not on their main menus, you just have to ask.
7) if you really need your cheese still, try cottage cheese instead. you can cook with it like any other cheese and use it as an alternative to other cheeses. it has much less calories than other cheeses and still tastes great.
8) fruit and fruit juice can be misleading as they can still have a lot of calories despite being healthy for you. for a drink with a meal, i'd suggest a flavoured sparkling water instead of juice as it comes with zero calories and is surprisingly refreshing with food. for example, fortino's has lemon, lime and mandarin flavoured sparking waters.
2lbs per week is a sustainable rate long term, but early on you can go faster.
For the March weigh in I would expect the winner to exceed 10% lost (but not by much).

gl guys!
Thanks trigs!
Couple questions/comments:
1) Why would coconut oil be better than butter? In equal quantities they would have the exact same calories, would they not? For health purposes I would say coconut oil is essentially equivalent to butter, and both are huge improvements over margarine or whatever comes in microwave popcorn.
5) Totally agree. Water is key!
6) Limiting starchy/sugary carbs (bread, potatoes, rice, fruit) is a good idea. Don't limit yourself on vegetables/greens! Gluten free doesn't have any relation to carb free.
8) THIS is probably the most important piece of advice. Drinking your calories is a main cause of weight gain. Limiting fruit is also a good idea, though some fruit is better than others. Berries are pretty good. Bananas and grapes are very sugary and should be avoided.

'taste like sadness' LOLZ!
try hot sauce. lots of hot sauce. you owe me 10% of your action now.
I thought all of trigs points were quite good. Although (unfortunately) this is a completion for weight loss, not health - though of course the two are related.
By which I mean the advice about the flax crackers is great for health (I'm sure they're much healthier than chips), it isn't so good for weight loss. In equal quantities I'm sure they are equivalent to chips in calories.
well, this is the 'fat boy challenge' thread. not 'give me generic advice on healthy eating'.
sure his suggestions are more healthy. here's another - only buy food from the outside aisles of the grocery store. that fixes about 90% of our eating issues.

yeah, i should have explained this one more. they are pretty much equivalent in calories, but i just find the coconut oil coats easier with less oil needed. maybe it's because it's solid at room temperature, idk. my gf is a popcorn fiend and we have a fairly big table top popper that is similar to the ones they use in movie theatres. we've found that you can put a lot less coconut oil on and it still coats all the popcorn and tastes great. i would have to defer to her expertise as she's been playing with her popcorn "recipes" for years.

that is true that gluten free does not necessarily mean carb free. gluten free food can still contain carbs that come from flours made from beans or grains that are naturally gluten free. many gluten free flours have the same amount of carbs as gluten-containing flours, but there are exceptions such as some bean flours. i guess you could inquire about the specific flour that the restaurant is using, but i figured that simply asking for the gluten free alternative when you are desperate for some sort of bread/starch is better than not asking at all. obviously, avoiding starch/sugary carbs as much as possible is best.

you are completely correct. however, i want everyone to lose weight in a healthy way so i made suggestions to that end.
here (just for pkrfce9) are my suggestions for unhealthy weight loss (i strongly suggest not using these methods unless you are pkrfce9 - he can do anything):
1) eat facial tissue. it fills your stomach so you don't feel hungry and your body passes it easily and they have no calories. it's a trick that models use.
2) exercise in garbage bags. tape garbage bags around your body, arms, and legs. it increases your sweating and you can shed a few extra pounds of water weight easier.
3) negative reinforcement. every time your stomach growls, poke yourself with a pin or hurt yourself in some way.
Last year I lost 20 lbs in January by not drinking and eating vegan doing that now so I am hoping for at least 15% by March which would put me under 250 lbs.

This would be an impressive feat. I will read your book after this. (Not buy, just download from pirate bay or something like that.)
2) exercise in garbage bags. tape garbage bags around your body, arms, and legs. it increases your sweating and you can shed a few extra pounds of water weight easier.
Full disclosure: In my younger days I did exactly this in order to win a weightloss competition.
Two of my friends and I had this wager on, where the winner was the first person to lose 15% of their weight (We were all 250+), no time limit. Well my one buddy started going to the gym and taking things really seriously so I had to step it up a notch and get there ahead of him. I put on the garbage bags and walked around town for a few hours. Also I dropped my drinking to nearly zero that day and was taking dandelion root supplement to encourage water-loss.
I did win. I think I lost over 8lbs that day. However that was when I was young and stupid.
I promise I'm not going to do anything like that in this competition, and neither should anyone else. At our ages it's a good way to have a heart attack.
Gotta be honest trigs I stopped reading at "dried salted seaweed"
i know that it doesn't sound good but it's really not that bad. in south korea, they serve it as a snack for free at the bars. it really cleanses your pallet for the beer my gf and i still buy it in canada and eat it all the time. although, i also eat sushi all the time with the same type of seaweed (it doesn't have salt on it though). you can also dip it in soy sauce as well.
