Woodbine Raceway Poker Room

Western Fair and Georgian Downs have 3 PokerTek Video poker games
PokerTek | PokerPro®

Anyone know when Woodbine Raceway is going to be up and running? I heard they may have 10-13 tables which would be great for all of us that have to endure the drive to Rama or Fallsview

Where did you hear about 10-13 tables ? I would be surprised if it's that's number... but you never know if word catches on. I did hear they're getting them, not sure when but maybe 3-5 tables like Mohawk. The ones at Mohawk don't fill because there aren't enough players out there. Woodbine would be different, once people hear the game is there I'm sure they can fill at least three tables a night. Would be great if they can get 2-5 NL or PLO going.
  • Last week after I'd heard that virtual poker tables were in use at some of the racetracks I decided to take a drive out to Woodbine and see if anything was going on there. Nothing yet but spoke to the floor man at the virtual blackjack and Baccarat tables who pointed at the curtain when I asked him about virtual poker and he said that's where the work is underway to install the machines. He didn't say how many tables (cause I forgot to ask) but they will be up and running end of October or beginning of November. In any case the games will definitely be here soon. I said to myself, this calls for a beer so I went up to the track and had one while watching the last thoroughbred race for the night.

Also since I'm so burnt out of driving to Fallsview for instance, I decided to go play up at Georgian on the weekend and had a great time. Lots of loose money if you ask me ;). The one girl they had working the floor for three almost full 1-2 NLHE tables told me they plan to bring in 2-5 and try some Omaha. Right now it's all 1-2 NLHE so we'll see.

I don't mind the virtual tables. I've had a chance to play them in Montreal and on a cruise ship. They have advantages and some disadvantages but more than anything they give us a choice finally! Nearly every major city in the world has poker by now. Hopefully this is the beginning for TO.

    Cheers!
  • Anyone been to these lately? A friend recommended the tables at Mohawk, was planning on checking it out.

Been to Mohawk and played a few times - pretty loose action but not the most sophisticated players. Don't expect advanced plays from this group; I see it as more like overplaying hands ... so if you are holding a strong hand and willing to call (an all-in) after the flop, most of the time you will be ahead against a weaker hand or a draw that was overplayed. Again, just my experience playing there 4-5 times. Others may see it in a different perspective. It's a more conservative style than Rama / NF players pre-flop - very little 3 betting or 4 betting.
  • sounds like it could be profitable, thanks devil going to check it out this week
  • Construction on the Woodbine poker lounge is progressing nicely and we'll be opening to the public on Friday October 26th. We're working on our opening strategies now such as tournament schedules, offers etc. The room will feature 11 poker tek poker tables + 1 black jack table and will operate 24/7. Let me know your feedback on your experiences at other sites and what you would like to see in the room.

Looking forward to checking this out! What limits will they have at these tables and game choices?
  • limits will range from $1-$2 up to $5-$10 Limit and NL. Higher limit games could be possible if the demand is there. We'll have a variety going and change based on player demand.
  • OMG! I'm ecstatic! Woo hoo! Legal poker in Toronto finally! Well not counting the ex but I never played there anyways.

My suggestion to Woodbine is you might want to give us more than just a half hour for lunch and dinner. Otherwise I'll have to brown bag it.

2-5 nlhe shouldn't be a problem to keep going but why not try a 1-2 plo game to get people to try it. A 2-5 or 5-5 game could follow once a player pool gets established.

    See you at the tables!

never seen these tables so I have a question.

Is there a way to lock the table for washroom breaks or diner breaks?

    Yes.

When you put in your card, which holds all of your money (chips) you use your password to login and decide how much to put on the table, then when you want to take a break you simply mark yourself as away and then use your password when you get back. The question is how long will you have to be away at any one time...
  • Any word on what the promos Woodbine will be offering are?

I hope you guys have a tv or two that show the races in the poker room.
It's a bit ridiculous to play poker at a racetrack and miss the races you've bet on.
Bad set up at Mohawk poker tables since you have to run away from the tables to catch the race at the bar!
  • did this ever open as planned or rumored?

Opened on Friday at noon, sat in for a few hours ($1-2). Fast game, internet poker feel to it. Will prolly be very busy from now on, great alternative to driving to Niagara/Rama. Buddy is a "pit boss" says no call-in seat reservations...
  • I dropped by Saturday afternoon (around 3ish), saw a 2/5NL running and a 1/2NL running. Heard they weren't promoting it yet till they get more experience with the machines.

On opening day someone mentioned they had a 5/10NL and a PLO game. Definitely doesn't feel like live poker, but with strict AGCO rules, I guess we have to live with it for now.

They had a glitch with the Straddle option on opening day, didn't work when you turned it on. Also, a guy to my left (seat#9) lost his turn to call/bet when it automatically folded one of his hands before the 45 seconds were up.
  • I still haven't played there yet, but I'm hearing a few complaints about it already, like they ask a lot of personal questions when you try to cash out.

Also is there a limit on how much you can lose/buy in each month? Cause someone mentioned that there is a $3000 limit each month.
  • i heard the max they can run under their licence is 2/5. Not sure if this is true. Time for a CPF trip?
  • I played on these tables at Mowhawk this Sunday aft. I was planning an hour to play and $100.00 limit. No waiting, only 1 table of 1-2NL running. Loose play and large action. Seen a newbie drop $100.00 on his 3rd hand, another fellow drop $500.00 in 1/2 hour. Its an unusual combination of playing on the comp online and live. The touch screen does not work so well with your fingers you end up using your winners circle card to tap the screen icons. If you are used to having chips in your hands while playing live, its an adjustment for sure. The good things are its fast play, no dealing errors, no card shuffle changes or time outs, no session fees, NO WAITING is the biggest bonus, and seems to be inexperienced players will try it out cuz it looks like playing a slot machine or virtual blackjack. Its NL and within a 40 minute drive from Waterloo. The cons are now the casino knows exactly how much you are making playing live. Every cent is tracked because you have to load up on the winners circle card account before you play and unload it at the cashier. Maybe its more secure?? but big brother now has access to more info. Not having a live dealer helps cut down on errors but some dealers are very entertaining people and they deserve their tips and work. The dealers also help control the game from getting too chatty. In short summary Its an interesting new way to play and well worth it to check it out.

My result for 1/2 hour of play was a lot of folds but managed to double up from the big stack with A9c against his A2o. We flopped an As 3h 4h. 2 K turned and rivered and my hand held up. After that I was card dead for 15 minutes and my time was out. Good money to be made if you can be patient for good hands.

Also got a free $5.00 voucher for slots and turned that into $16.00 in 5 minutes. A decent day out for an hour :)

obviously there are no dealers, but i'd figure there was still someone just kind of supervising, isn't there? without someone watching i'd think the game could have some issues such as collusion or people just being more dickish than normal since there's no one telling them to shut up.
  • Yes there is a pit boss. He seemed to be away from the action more then being around while I was there. I got a few simple instructions and made a few donk questions so that the players already there would think I was fresh fish! >:D. The boss may have been around a lot more often before I was there and perhaps more often if the tables are busy. There is also cameras overhead as well. Not sure how much these cameras are watched though. If anyone felt the the chatting was getting out of control then usually they would get a friendly reminder like...."your up bud".

You do realize that there are also 3 tables at Mohawk that have been there for 3-4 months right? A lot closer for those in Waterloo.. Also why would you be worried about big brother, think he cares how much you're making (or losing)?
  • The experience I am sharing was at Mowhawk :) Was there this past Sunday. Yes i know i posted in the Woodbine thread but part of the topic is about the Poker Pro tables. . Not that I am concerned too much about big brother as our winnings are tax free. Its just more info they can gather. When you load up onto your winners circle card you have to present ID to cash in or out. Its secure I guess but I would hate to loose the card. In live cash they cant really track your play that accurately as they can now with these.

I hope you don't use any loyalty cards then. The stores track how much you spend, what you buy and when and gear their sales, store set up, flyers, etc.. to those patterns.
