What limits do you play? Live or online? Cash or MTTs?

How much do you make on average per month?

I honestly didn't think you played much at all.
  • I don't play much, mostly being sassy

Outside of the forum games, I rarely play online. My BR is miniscule, like <$100. Live I play many of the local games - I'll always play a Bristol, often one of Buzzzard's and have been meaning to get out to the cave. I only hit the casino maybe once or twice a year. Mostly due to not having a poker bankroll (damned social work). I do hope to get out to The Cave though.

I often do say "Man, I gotta get a BR and treat poker like a part time job" but it falls into the same category as "Man I gotta lose some weight" and "Man I gotta start eating healthy"

  • So what does your social work job entail? How did you choose that career? Do you find it rewarding, depressing, both? How long have you been doing it and have you had the same job the entire time? Does it become like most other jobs that it is just routine after a while?
  • For the last 8 years I've been working for the John Howard Society

The agency in general deals with people who have "Come into conflict with the law" and our mission statement is to find "Humane, just, and effective responses to crime and its causes".

I personally work with teenagers (anyone on a youth order). I run a "CBT" (cognitive - behavioural group, basically means change how they think to change how they act). The basic breakdown is they come see me for 2.5 hours twice a week (I run two groups / week, varying between Smart choices, Anger Management, Substance Awareness, Employment Readiness, Surviving School, and Life Management Skills). The group breaks down to 1 hour of recreation time, 1/2 hour of eating & cleaning up, and then 1 hour of material covered.

I found my way into this field in a bar actually. I first went to school for computer science, and then quickly found out I hate programming. At the same time I was taking intro psychology and LOVED the messed up shit people were doing there (pre ethics board), and switched. As I was finishing up, I was telling a friend I had to find some decent paying part time work over a beer - he said "Hey! I'll introduce you to Liz! She runs a house for homeless boys that just opened up!" I said sure, figuring he'd e-mail her the next day or something. Instead, he turned around and tapped Liz on the shoulder, we chatted, and I was working there the next week.

After a couple years of PT work there, I worked full time while finishing my degree (Honours BA Psychology), but the full time work didn't play out as well, and they didn't renew past my probationary period (i.e. fired). They offered me the PT position again, but my man-pride was wounded and I said no. Looking for work, I ended up at the AIDS committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Area. Again, after probationary period, I got fired again! This time though, and to only partially protect my ego, it seemed to be because of miscommunication / dislike between myself and the interim manager. Also, I didn't seem to mesh as well with the clientèle - teenagers and I get on famously, but less so adults.

So then I found the John Howard Society. I've gone through 10+ partners, but my current partner - Marisa - and I have been together for about 6 years and get on fabulously. There's only been one partner I didn't get along with (TOTALLY her fault). Partners make a big impact on my job enjoyment, as the kids tend to average out in regards to how frustrating they are. Some are stunningly easy to deal with, and some are incredibly frustrating. The job itself isn't too tricky if you have the temperament, and you see quite often the same set of issues with kids in general (parental failings, idleness, low economic status, mental health / IQ, etc) as the biggest challenges.

It does become routine in regards to paperwork and the hoops you have to jump through in regards to the office environment, but the kids themselves tend to go in phases - some just want to play cards, some sports, some just shoot the shit, food and material is usually the same (as well as the ensuing behaviour issues).

Probably a shotgun, pretty sure I'm not a great shot, so it gives me a bigger killzone.

Of course, if I was guaranteed to hit, it'd be a bazooka / RPG. Just leave kibble bits after that because I'd hate to see the person I just killed's face.

  • My daughter is getting a psych degree. What line of work would you recommend?
    Funniest experience at work?
    When is the next LMO?

    and finally

    Jose Bautista. :D
  • Not knowing your daughter at all...

What does she like to do? There's a wide range in Psychology, there are times I wish I was more in research vs "front line". I'd suggest getting her Masters if not PhD (especially if you're footing the bill) if she'd like to make really nice money. Social Services doesn't pay well unless you get into a directly funded by ministry kinda spot (think Probation Officer).

The funniest experience at work? Hmm... we usually have a lot of good times in group, myself and Marisa are big personalities, so that helps. I do remember one kid we had a few years back, he was lactose intolerant, but loved cheese. Anyways, I come out of the bathroom and it's just Marisa sitting there, and I look around for the kid, and he's on the other side of the door from the gym (I can see him through the glass), and I hear a muted, bass-filled, continual sound - almost like he's talking. I look at Marisa, shocked, and ask "Is he on his cell phone?!?" (A big no-no during group) and Marisa just starts laughing. The kid comes back in, and I ask him again - Marisa can hardly breathe - and the kid turns bright red. "No, the cheese from the pizza is starting to kick in, and I had to fart so I went out there"... bwahahaha. Yes, I like fart jokes.

Funny you should ask about LMO - I was talking about ideas just last night! I'm thinking the weekend after the September long weekend. You in?

    Yes, I owe you $30

  • How did you find poker forum and why are you still here?
  • The answer is ..... It's a camel but this one is a ass!

    What is the question?

2003's poker boom lead me to look around for local games, think I googled "Poker Kitchener" and came across a Bristol Street game. Bookmarked the page, met Zithal, and attend most of the events he hosts (he's really rad).

I'm still here because I like to play in the local games, and some of the insanity on here (that I only sometimes cause). I probably don't do much strategy any more, as a casual player, I'm pretty happy with how my game is. But mostly, it's the people. I've met hundreds of people playing through this site, and consider many of them friends.

  • >> I rub a "CBT"

Knowing the age of the kids that you work with, isn't that highly illegal ??

How does Marissa let you get away with it?

First it's Marisa with one S, and yes it's a big deal to her.

Second, she has, on no less than two occasions, PUNCHED (not slapped, not backhanded) me in the face.

PO's good pay, and from what I understand decent holiday / flex time. However, from what I have seen, it's VERY hard to get a full time permanent position. Many PO's in Cambridge here end up on contracts of varying length (I've seen as short as a month, and as long as a Maternity leave). In Cambridge, I can think of 3/6 that are permanent, and the other three positions have been filled with no less than 10 rotating personnel in the last 8 years.

A friend of mine is a permanent Adult PO - she got in by volunteering there.

  • 1. Your biggest life leak
    2. Your biggest poker leak
    3. Your biggest poker win
    4. How many KMs on your Smart Car
    5. 10 yrs in same job, do you ever look at doing something else?

    1. Far and away my drinking habits. They're expensive, not good for me, and making it hard to keep off the weight

    2. Probably the fact that I'm too lazy to push it to the next level, or that I just don't play as much as I should to keep what skills I have sharp.

    3. Westside poker club, live game, ~110 people and took $1800 on a $65 buy in. Sad part is, I wasn't going to play, and Mario staked me to get me to play saying "No need to repay, just give me half of what you win".

    4. Umm.. I think 115k?

    5. Some days very much so. It's hard though, I have a significant amount of seniority here (think 2nd in this office), 5 weeks vacation/year. I also love my hours (11a.m. - 7 p.m.) and enjoy the work. However, JHS has been really taking it on the chin this past few years. Between cutbacks and the resulting layoffs, as well as medical circumstances and three deaths, we're at less than half the staff we had in 2010. Combine all this with the allure of making more than 45k/year? It's quite tempting.

Wait for your week, please . . .

    Any serious relationships BESIDES Mario?

Do you see yourself married and with kids?

How badly will you damage them psychologically?

To take it in the heterosexual direction....

Mario and I have known each other since Kindergarten, and hang out with some regularity. I have two other friends in the same situation, Andrew and Daco.

Married, maybe, hell, potentially probably. Kids - never. I don't like kids, I don't want kids, and I usually don't want to hang around other people's kids (even my nephews aged 3&5 get annoying after an hour)

Since I don't have kids, I can't damage THEM psychologically. I have to admit though, with the various friends I have popping kids out nowadays, some are as old as 5-6, I'm wondering if in 10 years when they're little pissy teens if I'll be getting a call to "Come talk to them maybe?"
