Busto long time ago. No mo forumers left.
  • Is Gavin Smith still in?
  • I'm so glad that the one forumer I've ever blocked is still regaling us with his wisdom

Here is some fun reading for you MM. Glad to see my prediction about SirWatts was spot on!

Ok, I'm still baffled. What prediction, and how was it right?

Did I miss the "Watts went busto" and "Watts is living under a bridge crying himself to sleep on his horribly squandered degree" threads, because I'm fairly sure I would have seen those...

that at the time of MM's big win, SW had as much chance to win a major, which he did after the fact. These guys have better things to do with their time than post on this forum.

First of all, don't YOU have better things to do than post on this forum mr high and mighty... :)

2ndly Mike does post here, maybe not as much as those who are here every day. He also is a very down to earth level headed type of a person. I'm sure Pinhead can attest to that. Have you ever even met him?

still think he would have been better off staying in school...its a forum and so I am entitled to an opinion. Granted, some may disagree with it but do you think I give a shit?? Remember, this is a forum about a card GAME.
  • Edited...don't want to get the thread any more off it's topic...which now appears should be cheering on SuperNed to getting in the money at the $2500 Fallsview :wav:

And it wasn't even with AK.

The THIRD SIGN OF THE COMING ANTICHRIST!

I really don't want to get into this debate but nor draw your wrath :D but I read some of those threads. No way in hell anyone in their right mind would stay in school given his situation...nor would 'parents' ever have a right or be in the right encouraging him to stay in school. That is pure insanity. Strike while the iron and poker world is HOT and make some money. Why would someone choose to be lame and like the masses when they aren't? I mean, would you encourage an actor on a hot TV shot to quit and go back to school? Opinion yes...but bizarre ! !

there is a big difference between being an actor and a degenerate gambler. Well maybe a glorified degenerate gambler.
  • Maybe. I just think school is highly over rated and should never be chosen over actually DOING (but do have a university degree myself) I edited out my original post anyway.

Well for most people, DOING requires a decent resume to fall back on. Because, lets face it, more employers require a decent education. Not unless you work for yourself, which is difficult for most people. Too many young people look up to these 'pro' poker players as role models and think they can chase a dream that leads to nowhere for the majority of them.

You are not giving the youth of today enough credit.... The vast majority are way smarter than that. I'm beginning to believe that you are jealous because you "missed" your shot... Look at me, I missed it by a lot more than you did.. :) There is nothing wrong with taking shots whether it be at poker, pro sports, starting a business young, whatever.. Follow the dream, just don't sell your sole....

Oh and believe me, the education part of the resume is way down at the bottom of the list priorities.. Life skills are so much more valuable... not necessarily poker skills, but skills learned by actually doing and accomplishing things..

I'm content grinding 5/5 with Blackmagicz on a Thursday night. I see no problem with chasing a dream, but get the education first so you have something to fall back on IF things don't work out.

Anyway, MM seems to have taken my good advice and will be returning to U of W:

This is my problem...why not get the education 'second' IF things don't work out. By getting the education first someone is pretty much 'ensuring' the poker thing doesn't work out. And no...I'm not talking making millions playing poker necessarily (and of course not in the tournament format...that would be ridiculous other than the odd lucky win [and no don't anyone jump on me for saying lucky...I'm not saying by any means it's all luck]). But in the poker 'business' you have to strike while the iron is hot (being a poker 'star'). I don't think anyone here would believe that Jason Mercier etc could actually count on making millions playing poker. Great poker players these days are a dime a dozen.....a dozen million is probably more correct. Not to take anything away from 'pros' mind you...but cmon...anyone who watches 'The Big Game' etc and sees the 'loose cannons' end up making money off the 'pros' more half the time kind of says it all. It's a crapshoot where today almost everyone plays at close to the same level with the odd unintelligent sucker thrown in. But if someone is hot and on a streak milk it for everything you can until the juice runs out. School can wait. Just don't lose all your money trying to 'milk that streak' ;)
P.S. This is not to insinuate the Mike isn't at a level just slightly above all those great players either....so may as well give 'er.
  • Back on topic from all the rediculousness ITT,

They weren't allowed to chop ? WTF, how can they do that, even $1 SNG on Full Tilt gives you the option to chop. And we're talking tens of thousands of dollars.
  • Actually, it is quite common now that in major tournaments you are not allowed to arrange a chop - including all WSOP and WPT events. It stemmed from the public image that something shady was going on when players were making deals in large tournaments.

You need a minimum of 5-6 hours in advance. Its a really a zoo. You're better off going to Seneca.
