The show had its premiere tonight! I would have posted something about this, but I don't think they've advised the Rogers Digital Cable "listings" of the schedule yet, so it's not officially listed in the "guide". It is on nonetheless, from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am. JohnnyT and Tina did an excellent job IMHO.
"My" first episode doesn't air until Friday, but by all means have a look before that if you'd like, and let me know what you think of the show and the concept.
The website is now live as well, although they haven't written a "bio" on me yet...Â
Congratulations Devin, you should be very proud of yourself! It looks like I'll be adding this channel to my line-up!
I wish you continued success with this and everything else you have going on.
A point of clarification: at the moment, "Poker Night Live" is not truly a live show.
For example, tomorrow (Wednesday) I will be shooting my first episode. We tape between 5 and 7. So, I'll be commenting on players who are playing at that time, NOT on players who are playing when it airs this Friday night. Etc. etc.
Pronouncing some of their names is a lot of fun. Clearly, some people sign up with usernames that they specifically want to hear us say on the air.
Names like:
kingofhearts
Juggs
Nigler
Pahkey
IronBalls
etc etc etc
I think I'm going to defer to calling them "middle position player, late position player, big blind" etc. when I either can't or would rather not pronounce their actual screen names.
My first show airs tonight at midnight if anyone's up and interested. The programming schedule has changed somewhat... I've included the new formula in the edited schedule in the first post of this thread.
Woohoo, checked last night and CGTV is part of my Rogers "over priced supposed to be digital but really it's analog through a converter and still sucks" lineup!!!!!
Look forward to catching one of your episodes AA. I've tuned in (post bar drunken of course) the last couple nights, only to get the other host. So far I've been moderately amused (definately better than that last celebrity WPT show they had on though). Just curious as to what sites they get these agreements from (to broadcast hole cards), and whether they have to notify or get the players to sign a waivier (ie. that that game is being broadcast pseudo-live). Maybe you already explained it though... I'll re-read the OP and check... GL with the first episode!
The sites that "Poker Night Live" observes and comments on can be found at one (maybe both, I'm not sure) of the websites for the show.
As for players signing some sort of a waiver, I really don't know the details on that, although I do know that any tables that *might* be taken to air are clearly labelled as "TV Tables".
Thanks guys... watching my first show back was definitely instructive... I mean, I watched myself completely objectively, and saw some good points and then some ways that I can change things up a bit.
Like, try to talk less lol... I was pretty nervous. But I know I had fun doing it, and I guess there were some high points.
We've taped 5 more 1 hour episodes so far, and I hadn't seen my first show (obviously) before we shot them. So, I'm hoping that I talk a bit less as the shows go on... the next five are out of my control! Kind of.Â
Thanks for staying up and watching. I'm having a great time talking about poker... I just gotta work on showing it!Â
I am watching you in action right now Devo.
I had to laugh at the sit and go when the player folds A 10 and then AA.......OK he must be sitting out.
Bad time to go to the bathroom......lol
Checked the show out last night - it was good! It was interesting to see all the hands and how they were played out...and I liked hearing your thoughts.
I didn't get a sense that your co-host knew a lot about poker....?
Thanks guys. Tina does know quite a bit about poker, the problem is that I was nervous, and jumping all over her and not letting her finish her thoughts. As a result, she'd start a sentence and I'd finish it for her. That makes it look like she doesn't know how to finish it herself, but she does... I was just a little too eager I guess.
I'm going to try and chill out a bit in future episodes lol...

I wish you all the best with it..checked it out Friday, you could tell you were a bit nervous but that will go away I'm sure. It's a great idea but I wonder if the hands are glossed over a bit to quick...I didn't really pick up on a whole lot of discussion about strategy on each street or what you thought the players were trying to do, whether you thought they were good or bad plays it seemed more to be a simple discussion about the end result of the hand and it flips quickly from table to table...but online does go rather fast and maybe that's not the goal of the show or maybe I just plain missed it...it was 1:00am!!!!? I did love your comment on one hand on a high stakes NL table where a guy called and all-in for something like $4900 and lost and you said something like 'He's probably lying on his couch in a fetal position now."
Anyways I hope you have a good run with it!
Thanks for bringing my sunglasses Rob, it was great playing with you.
I was just watching some live poker on TV (I love that I have to make that distinction... guess poker's come a long way) and I think that the speed of online poker is a factor as you mentioned Big E.Â
We have no shots of people thinking about their decisions for 20 seconds while the "action" of the hand is on hold, so with online poker there is a need to describe the action as it happens, but it runs up against the need to talk about it. It moves so fast, if you cover one player's thinking in any kind of depth, you've missed 4 other plays, some of which aren't worth talking about, but some are.Â
So, I guess I'm still trying to make a compromise between talking about what's "happening" (to make the show easier to watch for the non-online players) and talking about what's really happening. I'll probably never be able to hit it perfectly between one thing and the other, but it's fun trying!
Couldn't the production people "pause" the action?
It's probably (though I'm not sure) not al ive SNG as you could sit there and watch your hands from home. I think in a noteworthy situation, a quick pause to explain what the expert would be thinking would add a lot!!
Sure, less hands / show, but better in-depth analysis.
Mark might be hitting on something. Is there anyway you can tape-delay the action, so that it can be paused? It means less hands watched, but it gives you the freedom to stop a hand and really explain what's going on here.
Yeah, that's what I was missing and that would add a lot of value to the show....I mean sure it's nice to look at the babe and it's always intriguing in a strange sort of way to watch Devon's thumbs but discussion on a deeper level would be worthwhile!
Listen guys, when you get a freakin' poker show you can have one that pauses the action, OK?!?
I'm kidding of course. It's a great idea. I asked for it in one of the first episodes we shot, but they either can't or would rather not implement that sort of technology. It is an uninterrupted feed that the control room receives... I don't think they have any control over it. And, the "average" viewer might not really want the poker action to be paused while I go on about things that they might not really care about. They might just want to watch people win and lose a lot of money. But I'm really speculating here... I have no idea to tell you the truth.
So, a compromise it shall be, for now at least. I do manage to get into some fairly lengthy discussions of strategy, usually at the expense of a hand or two that goes by "unannounced". For example, I've covered check-raise bluffing and when and why it's a good idea or a bad one, as well as when to just call with flush draws vs. when to raise them, re-stealing, etc etc etc. Also, I usually get a minute or so to answer email questions, and I try to get as deep as I can within that period of time. A lot of people wouldn't want to hear me go on and on any longer than that, anyways... I'm glad that people out there are hanging with me as it is.
Thanks for watching, and email the show! I love emails. So does JohnnyT. And Tina, too.

The catching of the giant fish and then putting it in his mouth is classic! This video is a blend of art and creativity at its finest.

Famous lines:
"I love that necklace"
"Devo's going for a time out at the break"
"I like that bet by IronBalls"
I liked your commentary -- nice show. Time for bed.

I nearly hurt my spleen at this point.

Lovely cohost.....
Hobbes
And yes, she is a very lovely and married co-host.
Also, the other co-host, Tina, is not so bad herself.
ScottyZ
Oh so you noticed eh?
And no, I didn't "notice"! It just came up in conversation.
Why do I get the feeling that Tina is going to achieve Shana Hiatt-like status in the Canadian poker world...
ScottyZ
Her job was the name pronounciation.
Anyways I hope you have a good run with it!
