I'm going thru to Day 2 of the $2500 with a 88.7k stack. Blinds are $1200/2400. If I bubble this tournament as I did the Super Satellite, I may quit poker forever.
Thanks to everyone here in the Falls and over the inter web that railed my run in the $2500 WPT at Fallsview the last few days. Especially Steve K and the OPT crew, Michelle, Dave H, Walt , Alex, Buddy (BF), Greg and others. It really means a lot to have some friends on the rail cheering you on
I will post a short TR when I get back to Waterloo...until then good luck to Steve K as he plays on Day 2 of the WPT Main Event at Fallsview!!
Here is a short TR from my recent WPT Fallsview trip...
Well I'm finally back in K-W after spending the last 5 days down at the WPT Fallsview Poker Classic. I am happy to report that my poker bankroll has benefitted from my 15th place cash in the $2500 event.
I won the WPT seat thru OPT satellite along with Steve Kerr who won the other seat back in December. This was my second time playing in a WPT event, the first was back in November in Montreal where I played in the Main Event. I drove down on Thursday and checked into my hotel at the Radisson just up the hill from the casino. My plan was to rail some other PFer's that were playing in the $1100 event and then jump into the $275.00 super satellite for the $2500 at 3pm. I ran into a lot of poker friends that I knew from Brantford, Mohawk, GBH, Playground and Fallsview. It is becoming quite clear to me how small the poker community is around here when I keep seeing the same familiar faces. Anyway to make a long story short, I ended up bubbling the satellite. Yep - 41st out of 400 players. Top 40 scored the coveted seats to the $2500. If you have never bubbled a tournament, sit n' go, or a satellite before, don't worry you will....it happens. I won't lie, it's a shitty feeling but, I rolled with it and a few beers later that evening in the casino helped ease the pain. Besides, I already had a seat. Congrats to Card Dead and djgolfcan who hung on and did win their seats to the $2500! We were encouraging each other every step of the way...
The $2500 was to get underway on Friday at noon. The cut from the bubble boy experience the previous night must have been a little deeper than I first thought, cause my hangover from all the beers the night before I had with Brewster was a reminder that drinking lots of alcohol doesn't really ease the pain....lol. It certainly wasn't my plan of attack for Day 1 but, I did play with a pretty nasty hangover which didn't really start to ease up till around level 7 or 8 (I can't remember which...). I don't recommend this tactic to anyone aspiring to improve their poker game, and will be plugging this leak going forward by not bubbling. Anyway, I gained a bit of traction in the later levels and survived, so it was onto Day 2. image.jpegimage.jpeg
160 players began Day 2 and I was in decent shape with my 37 bb stack to start the day. I grinded the whole day out with Steve K, Michelle and later Dave H on the rail. My table, 43 was right beside the rail, and I can't say enough how much I appreciated the support. My stack hovered around 20-25bbs for the most part. The bubble broKe with 81 players and I was into my first WPT cash! (Sidenote: I was relieved as I had promised the day before in conversation with Blondefish and others, that if I was to bubble again two days in a row that I was going to quit poker forever...). A couple levels before the end of the day, Olivier Busquet sat down directly across from me. His chip count was very similar to mine and we both were looking to double up soon. At one point I noticed him eyeballing my stack and talking to himself. I asked him what mantra was it he was chanting under his breath, or was he counting my stack? He looked up and said "I was just praying for a double-up." We talked a bit about his upcoming MMA fight with JC Alvarado. I had heard about it on the 2+2 poker podcast earlier this month. Apparently the two pro poker players made a prop bet awhile back. Alvarado is the favourite at 150 to 120. I think the fight is in a couple months in Vegas. Anyway, shortly afterwards Busquet's prayer was not answered. He shoved with his KJ on the cutoff into my pocket 10's. I doubled up as my hand held, and his day was over on his next hand.
Our table broke shortly afterwards and I was moved to an adjoining table for the last level of the day. With 17 players remaining it was announced that the next hand would be our last. I looked down at pocket tens again UTG and led out with a 2.2x raise. Andy Spears from Buffalo was on my direct left 3 bet to around 110k. He had one of the bigger stacks, around 1.3 million, and had done this earlier to me when I got moved to his table. When he 3-bet that time it was folded around back to me and I 4 bet shoved my A J and he quickly mucked his hand. This time I was planning to do the same and hoped to double up to around a million in chips. Anyway, it got folded around to the cutoff who had just got moved to our table and he 4 bet to 250k! I squirmed a little, glanced at my rail, counted my stack again and eventually folded the 10's. Andy 5 bet shoved and was quickly called by Sam Tsehai. Spears had AK and Sam had AA. Good fold me.... Sam doubled up his already giant stack and eventually went on to win the tournament.
Day 3 and 17 players....I had around a 500k stack which was playable at around 20bbs. The antes were getting up there at 4k. I scooped a couple small pots but never really got anything going early in the day as I had hoped. After bleeding for a bit, I looked down at 55's in the BB after there was a min raise by UTG + 3 which was flatted by the SB. I couldn't find the fold and jammed my remaining 11bbs into the middle. I thought I could blow the caller off his hand and I would settle for a race with the original raiser but, it wasn't to be. He had AA and my tournament was over in 15th place. ( I also realize that getting it in here may have been mistake on my part....comments welcome!)
So lots of highs and a little disappointment (Funny how that works, eh? Seldom seems a cash is good enough when there is more to be had up top).
Once again I'd like to thank all the guys and gal that railed me into Day 3 and congratulate Alex for his Day 2 run in the $1100. All the satellite winners including Card Dead and djgolfcan (who also made it into Day 2 with me) in the $2500 super, and Blondefish in the $550 ME satellite. Also, to Steve K who made a good run in the Main Event for a 86th finish from over 400 runners. I enjoyed being on the rail today!
PocketTwos - first off congrats on the cash! A couple of questions comments if you will:
- how did they let you play the supper satty if you already had a seat? They announced that they wouldn't let anyone register who was already in the $2500
- same satty: i busted 46th and it felt incredibly horribly. Possibly my worst feeling EVER in poker. I could have won a seat had i folded. I should have known better...
- same satty: after i busted i stuck around and played some 2-5 (not the best decision but i actually won a bit). When they announced that the satty was over and everyone started clapping and then there was a "wait a minute" moment and made everyone sit back down again because there was some sort of mis-count. What exactly happened (if you remember)? Were there 42 but they thought it was 41? Or did someone have extra chips left after thinking they just busted?
Actually I didn't buy my $2500 seat yet. I had the cash in hand from OPT for the seat. I tried to win the seat thru the sat so I could keep the monies from OPT.
I didn't go into much detail with my bubble and the satellite. I was a bit unlucky as I had a good stack that I was milking a bit to survive. On one hand I was in the bb and 8 9 and there were two callers. Flop was 10 J 4. It was checked around and the turn was a Q. Straight for me! Checked to guy on my right and he shoves! I have him covered and insta call. He shows K 7. Yells for the A on river and low and behold A on river. He doubles up instead of being eliminated and I gotta start playing poker again.
Anyway, play continues and as you know the blinds are crazy and many people are getting short including me. There had to be at least 3 or 4 all ins before me during the hand-for-hand and they lucked out. One guy went runner runner for a flush to stay alive.
the one you are talking about when it was "done" was a guy had like 1bb and was all in with K 4. He got called by three players and it was checked down. One of the floor guys said "We are done - it's over" Everyone started cheering and clapping. I even fist pumped a couple of other players.....then all of a sudden one of the other floor personal notices it's a chopped pot between the two players because of a counterfeit pair on the board or something. Lol. That slow sinking feeling started to creep in cause I myself was super short and the blind was coming around again. Then the other short stack on my table is all in and called. He opens up with 4 5 off and the other player had K 7. The fucking flop came with a 7 in the window followed by a 3 and 6 to give buddy a straight!!!,
i I went out with Q 4 when I guy shoved on my bb and I didn't even have enough behind for the small blind. He had 10 10. Of course the flop had a goddamn Q in the window, and a 10 underneath as the dealer ripped the cards across the felt.
Not my satellite....lol
Yeah, not a very good feeling but it happens to the best of them!
I think in time if you reflect on the 55 hand there are probably better spots. Getting down to that few, most are competent enough to recognize stack sizes so youre really hoping for a race - and that opening range against 11bb is not wide and eliminates many kj/qj/etc combos.
That said. I cant fold there. Its a leak I have around playing 10-15bb stacks where I panic abit around worrying about finding better spots in the next orbit or so. We can prob all learn here.
It was a fun ride (and a good sweat for OPT), Im sure theres more where that came from.
Greg and I leave for WSOPc next Tuesday, and theres still seats on the flight. No better way to spend your winnings than to blow it trying to win a ring!

You hit the nail square on the head.....I admit I got bit panicky with my stack here...lesson learned!
Thanks for the input Wetts, always insightful and much appreciated! It's been a blast so far playing with the OPT crew and getting to know some of you a little better...

I know the feeling...you 41st and me 42nd. Two poker forum bubble boys lol.
Yes, I have to agree - bubbling does suck the big hairy meatball. I've bubbled in the past, and it really blew, but not in a tourney the size of that super satty.
Finishing 12 from the money in the $2500 didn't feel great, but bubbling would have been much much worse.
It's nice to see some people on here doing well in these events and getting rewarded for solid play.
Wow, a record five members made it to the final 46 of that sold-out 400-player super satellite. Fallsview needs to use every available table and dealer next year instead of so many unused tables and huge waiting lists in the 600-seat Grand Ballroom during the week.
- how did they let you play the supper satty if you already had a seat? They announced that they wouldn't let anyone register who was already in the $2500
This is one of the MANY communication failures by Fallsview. After I won my $2,500 entry in the first $550 SNG I played, the manager LATER told me that I didn't have the option to pay the $275. Only those who bought a super satellite entry FIRST before winning as many $2,500 entries as they could (or buy) were allowed to play both.
Due to Fallsview packing seven flights into only nine days, a player was multi-tabling two events! I was playing the $550 super satellite while the $2,500 Day 2 was on break, then the manager and a security guard pulled a player off the next table. The multi-tabler was mad and demanded a refund.
Comments
Depends on if you're a regular or not.
I've chopped 2 pots with AK today. I'm so due for a run of cards. Just hope I get it in time.
Got it in good twice but, as usual, AJ < KT and then A5 < K9.
I didn't play perfectly today, but I feel I played well considering the cards I didn't have to work with.
Ya, I know. You're only a 60-40 favourite for a reason.
Take it down 22!
17 left. Locked up 15k. Eyes on the $290k up top....more work to do with my 20bbs.....
