I don't think I get it. If you steal $1 or $1k, it's still called stealing. Correct?
One might think so, but I'd suggest it is worthy of discussion, since others seem to feel 20k is a lot worse, which it probably is...
But few people understand in a deal between idiots or a deal between good pros 20k might be the same as 2 dollars...
And perhaps he would have done 2 million if it somehow went further.
Even a habitual offender must bare at least some responsibility for their actions. I don't see how the described situation represents anyone 'putting' anyone else in any situation. It appears to me all described made choices on their own.
Surely they should bare the largest amount of responsibility. But what is not clear is that it is a choice or simply and extension of a mutated gambling addiction.
I simply mean to contrast the idea of a scumbag POS with an inability to control ones choice in this context. I don't mean to give an opinion but it is truly a question of how we decide to treat those that we look down upon and believe ourselves to be better than.

I'm not sure if we're agreeing or not. I think we might be. I know lots of people on here have said they don't care if it's $4 or $4k or $4m. Theft is theft. However, a story of $4 isn't going to get the notoriety that a theft of $4k will. There will be more attention paid, thus more reaction.
I think this goes back to a previous discussion of addiction we were both involved in. Regardless of what a person is addicted to, they have to take responsibility for their actions as a result of their addiction. This is a common theme in all programs/theories addressing addiction and it's treatment.
Negative actions, whether performed under the influence of addiction or not will always cause people to attach a negative moral tag to the individual. Just as any positive action will result in positive flags being attached to the person.
If some guy who's an addict helps a little old lady across the street, someone seeing this is going to say "hey, what a nice guy!" If an addict grabs the woman's purse, someone's going to say "What an asshole!" It's basic human nature, I don't see it changing.

Mike is fun and knowledgable, but is also a pathological liar, and a big reason why nobody at all will have his back. He's already pulled this shit with others including those who befriended him.
Its quite likely "fed" truly believes he hasn't done anything wrong or possibly that he thought he was doing nothing wrong the whole time and only now realizes.
20K isn't necessarily different than 2 dollars in some respects...but someone giving him the option of going 20k in the hole creates an obviously inescapable vacuum for him (well for both of them).

This is true, but it doesn't address the root cause or "cure" of addictions. So its really a bigger "philosophical" argument I think on what is the driving force of our nature.
Something I learned from poker and game theory is too look at the ideals, and sometimes it can be helpful. What would happen in an ideal soceity where the poker community watched him like a hawk. I think people would enjoy his company and he would never "steal".
Nobody argues he is not capable of this, but I think the response should be discussed carefully.
And if you think murder is the only reason somebody on the internet should be berated, you're wack, pun intended. You may be an old fuck, but the real one who needs to grow up
Its true that he was overboard too but in bills defense all he has seen since arrival is a fed witch hunt.
There are those people in this world that feel that dehumanizing our enemies or those that tend to act against the common favorable good of mankind. This world seems to be fueled by those that feel there is some moral and logical justification behind calling someone a "fucktard scumbag", and that this berating might do some good for the world and could possibly even be viewed as "heroic".
But I can assure everyone that it is not justified either morally or logically. And especially if we were to view this situation from a completely unbiased perspective it would be easy to see the best way to stop this from happening is not to ban such a person from the community but rather the opposite-to adopt them. I have no doubt this is why comp has struggled to fully ban him (and me likely too).
We can notice that there are many intelligent well known and respected poker players that share dialog with M on a regular basis. All of these players no doubt will tell you the same thing, he means well, but he literally cannot control himself. He does not set out everyday to rip people off, he just talks his face off and cannot back it with the emotional control needed to play poker.
Let's be clear though, this community has been very hard on this kid for a very long time. Some people seem to feel that depending on one's circumstances certain peoples should be treated like shit. I tend to feel no one deserves such circumstances and so no one deserves to be treated like shit.
Just in case that wasn't succinct enough though:
Ostracizing people is wrong, regardless of who they are and what they have done. It's also sadistic.
I don't know you. Maybe you're a great, nice guy IRL...
But MAN do you ever come off like a half-wit, peen online.
I don't know you much either, but I've noticed that people act a lot "tougher" when they have a whole group backing them. And not so much when they are at a disadvantage.
Such behavior has always seemed quite telling to me.
I'm not sure how much of me you know or don't...but I was banned for 2 years by this community for "allegedly" being anti semetic. It was GTA and Mark that lead the charges for this...
I don't believe in ostracizing, they do ... clearly...

There is a zero percent chance he doesn't realize that stealing from others is wrong. He's professed this himself on this forum many times. He may not care if his OTHER negative behaviours are considered wrong by others, but he has professed his understanding of their negative nature to me personally and on the forum many times.
We also don't live in an ideal utopian ideal society. We live in reality with a great cross section of personalities owning various belief systems and social mores that he offended regularly.
Fed brought all the spotlight on himself. All day long.
As far as any witch hunt goes, like I said before you have to own your history. Some people are willing to accept the fact you've changed and some aren't. You need to own that, not them. However, if you don't show any indications of change and someone accepts that you have they're a fool.

I don't know if I am disagreeing if I just say I agree, but I think he cannot help it. It's a social weakness. Cleary, and I think many bright poker players would agree.

He also expressed many times he does not like to be referred to as Fed. It would be quite difficult to be in a spot like that, and I feel we underestimate what it feels like to have an entire community keeping up such a game vs you.

Yes. The question is what should our reaction be, and what should the magnitude of any "justice" or "punishment" be?
If 2 dollars is the same as 20k dollars then I think some proposals seems way too harsh for 2 bux.
And what if the cause of these "lost souls" is constantly not fitting in one's whole life? What if our adverse reactions to peoples bad deeds is what causes them to behave this way in the first place?
How should we treat these "scumbagz"? Should it be maliciously?
Let's be clear though, this community has been very hard on this kid for a very long time.
So, you would simply dismiss any personal responsibility he may hold for any of his behaviours or actions on this forum, or the reactions to these? He's simply a reaction or product of his environment with no ability to formulate choice?

No.
No I don't dismiss it, but I blame myself with him, as part of the community. There is certainly nothing to be accomplished by publicly berating him, and not much from outcasting him but personal satisfaction.

If he didn't want to be called Fed, he shouldn't have picked such a catchy screen name as the first of the 30 or so he's registered on here. That one sticks for me, although Costanza was a close call as well.
As for the bolded, I have no idea. If that's their cause, they're in a losing battle and I don't have the answer. If lighting a fire causes things to burn and that's not what you want, don't do it. I don't get into 'what ifs' often, but if it's your goal to not fit in to a niche you have some commonality with... Why are you there? Why did you seek this niche out?
At the end of the day, you're taking this to level 12 metathinking where it doesn't need to go. It's just poker and it's just a poker forum. If I had a kid who got kicked out of a bar for being a dick, I'd say "don't go back it's just a bar and stop being a dick". It's not the end of the world for everyone or them. If they couldn't find a bar where they could fit in, I'd say "stop going to bars, you've got a problem." At some point, you have to understand it's not everyone elses problem, maybe it's yours.
First of all I don't think there was any witch hunt for Mike, at first I felt sorry for him as he seemed just so immature. I met him (actually saw him) only once maybe 4 years ago. He didn't know it was me but I knew him. It was at a local tournament in Bellwood that he was supposed to get a ride to with Hellmuth's Mole I believe. He didn't show up for the ride but did get there. Apparently he was just too nervous to actually come into the hall, but he was there. I didn't recognize him until I saw his picture posted on another poker site I think it was.
I think he always wanted everyone to think he was some great poker player but failed so badly that he turned to making up stories upon stories trying to impress. It didn't work around here at all as we are a much smaller community that either 2+2 or P5.
He posted as fed, fedh8er, fedh8er1, costanza and several other aliases that I am too lazy to look up at the moment, especially after the busy day I have had. As far as I recall he never actually hurt anyone around here. He just acted stupid but was the originator of some crazy escapades either real or made up, which were quite entertaining. This latest fiasco of course changes things and I have no intention of defending him, sorry GTA..
I don't necessarily defend him, especially on this...but the truth or missing fact is that hes been this forum/community's scape goat for most of its existence.
Don't be so humble..
Fed's been the forum's 50/50 with another guy I know... current handle rhymes with bartles.
I'm not sure if I should weigh in on this debate of blame/praise in regard to Fed's actions. My views on this matter are not the norm and will probably cause more confusion than good to be honest.

I think you are obliged since a man's head is on the chopping block and that you have already given such an in depth dissertation on the philosophies of difficult matters. We seem to want to pretend that those that are quickest to berate and ostracize are the ones that would be the most valiant in difficult moral situations, but let me be then the only one to suggest that is ludicrous.
First of all I don't think there was any witch hunt for Mike...
It is not true to say, he clearly had no chance here, it has been pointed out many times that both GTA and Mark have done their best to instigate and provoke him (and me, and others).
Their defense is the evidence of this OP, that he is for example a scammer and perhaps worse, but it is not justifiable to then treat someone like that. Perhaps witch hunt is the not the correct phrase, but setting a man up to fail, and spitting on him when he does so, is not heroic.

This is painting the situation with a little more melodrama than it deserves. Nobodies head is on any chopping block. These are just internet forums. It's not the end of the world to be asked to leave one. If it is the end of the world, you need help and not from a bunch of people posting on the internet.
I'm not sure how many more metaphors I can come up with to simplify the situation for you, it doesn't need to be complicated. This is not a royal tribunal, nor a gathering of philosophers considering the meaning of life. Here's my last try.
He's pooped in the pool at all the parties he's been to for the last several years. He's been asked to leave and won't be welcomed back.

I understand and agree to an extent, its just you might not understand how much he would need a guy like you, and how useful it would be for him if you were there to explain it to him.
I think you said it yourself, that it is the equivalent of 2 bux.
My metaphor, it is difficult to justify beating a dog, when you have the capacity to teach it the behavior you demand, and its clear that the physical abuse isn't serving its intended purpose.
Just let it die folks, there is no defending him in this situation and to infer that anything that was done or said to him here in any way contributed to him going down the path that he has chosen is ludicrous.
He has been banned multiple times from multiple forums, some even before he came here the 1st time, so to suggest that anyone here made him a scapegoat is again, ludicrous. If so then people on all these forums, and I know of at least 3 others, must be getting together to "pick" on him. Ridiculous. He has made his own bed and although I felt some pity for him before, after scamming like this, no more.

Comp and I have both 'been there' for him on countless occasions. Probably far to many trying to explain how the pool is more fun to be in when he's not pooping in it. He'd look at us, smile, and take another dump.
When a random dog keeps squatting on your front lawn and taking a dump, you ask it to leave. Nobodies being beaten here.

Isn't that the issue, that it won't "die" and hasn't died? I don't think this thread is a revelation, there is nothing new here. It would be nice if it went away, but there is potential for it to get even worse (in the sense that he could do something stupider).
We still might want to philosophize about how we treat these scumbagz, it might be helpful as group therapy.
And you have not addressed the issue much, the issue is should we murder the murderers, lest we be guilty of what we are accusing the accused of?
Holy fucking deflection, batman!
Complain all you like but in the end...
If you don't want to follow the rules of the forum, leave.
If you don't like the way the forum is run, leave.
It's just a forum and a fairly useless one at that. If I wasn't looking for the latest insanity from Bill or cryptic updates from so called bappers, I think I'd have little use for this place now.
I am surprised that someone can get banned from this site based on some allegations from another site. Ok, I'm not really surprised.
I'm also surprised that asshole wasn't perma banned long ago. Ok, I'm not really surprised.

We all mostly agree on your logic here. But do we steal from the thieves? Do we insult the insulters? Do we outcast the outcasters?
It's archaic, and akin to stoning as a punishment, it is not to help society but simply an excuse to be violent.
I suggest we should try to collectively resist this temptation.

okay, i'll try to post something but i'll put it in my philosophy thread (most likely referencing frankfurt cases and the principal of alternative possibilities - i do actually love discussing this stuff). probably not going to happen today though...i'm mad hung over.
