Sounds like this task could be a business for someone...
Although all this sounds appealing, I would be a mess trying to figuring it all out.
It's not that bad Woog. I've always been reasonably tech savvy ever since I sold computers decades ago, but since then I've just been a social worker in prisons or a 'fluid management specialist' (i.e. painter) for the past 12 yrs. Lol.
Got Genesis installed on the nexus 7, but I keep getting "Error: Script failed" whenever I click on a tv show. Whoops, dogs are screaming at me outside. Gotta go!
click on the download link and then go through the same Install from Zip process under System - Addons, as before.
I can't do much fooling around for you right now because my kid obv put more crap free games on his tablet and it is out of memory again and I unfortunately smashed my tablet on Sat.
Lol if I didn't know better somehow you guys have made running xbmc/kodi/genesis seem super complicated. Its almost plug and play with an android box
I think that's the issue. For me at least. I'm trying to run it without getting any new hardware. However, I could see this being a bit of an uphill struggle either way even if I had the obviously necessary hardware onsite. With the addons, it hasn't been easy.
If I'd asked my wife to figure out this process, christ I'd be up to my knees in 'do it yourself you idiot' at this point.
The mygica 1200 box is about $100-120 at tigerdirect or the futureshop....for the money it's worth it. Seriously your wife will love it. Comes with a remote and hdmi cable....wifi but I just went the direct cable route. Seriously my girlfriend is in heaven....she likes tv more than me.....or should I say more than I do....or maybe it is the first one.....lol
Might have to check out one of the boxes you guys are talking about tho. I think wife was happy to see a remote leave the building, but when she sees the benefits she might reconsider. Gotta take things slowly though. Too much new or exciting spooks the herd. Be a good Shepherd.
Crap. Even the Nexus 7 doesn't appear able to broadcast Moose. Same result as on the PC. Everything appears dlna compliant, yet nothing dlna's.
C'est la vie. Gonna have to check out one of the boxes you guys are talking about.
We fought a good fight.
Edit:I wonder if one of us took this to the tech geeks at the avs forum if we could get a good summary or gist of what we need for minimum requirements and above?
Man I was considering giving this a try myself and convincing my wife to drop cable tv, however if she ever gets wind of what you guys are going through in here, she'll immediately sign a long term deal with the cable company.;)

Your Kung Fu is better than my Kung Fu and I've gotten this far. If I can get here, you can. Don't try and get out of this so easily. A little googling won't kill you.
It hasn't been that hard, just a little research intensive and Moose did most of the groundwork. The detailing has been a little painful but that's always the case.
I spent like 20 min watching YouTube and everything worked first time. I got kodi installed with the addons on two tablets and a laptop. The tablet beams no problem to my LG TV. I spent like two minutes showing my wife what is avail through Genesis and she spent the last two days watching Criminal Minds and also Gone Girl on her laptop.
Soon my G Box will arrive. I already have the shipment notice.
Looking more and more like wdtv isn't the box to use for Kodi as it lacks 'open GL support' whether it's dlna compliant or not. It would appear the Android box Moose will be getting is the wave of the present.
Man, these things have the lifespan of a fruit fly. I think it was less than a year ago I got the wdtv.
I've had mine since 2008 and it held up well until about the last 6 months I started running into some files that it wouldn't play the sound on. Up until then it played 98% of the stuff I threw at it. That's pretty decent. Your problem is you bought 5 year old technology.

Ha! True enough, but I was following your suggestion after my PS3 died. Just kidding. The thing still does what I wanted it to do when I got it which is stream A/V from the hard drive on my PC to my AVR so I've got no complaints in that regard. The only complaint I do have about the thing is that every now and again it reverts to not recognizing my network shares which appears to be a common problem as I've seen it mentioned many times. Mine has never balked whatsoever at any file type I've thrown at it with either audio or video.
You are 100% correct though in the sense that asking 5yr old tech to be compatible with today's tech is asking far too much. Can't ask it to complete a task it was never designed for. I guess at the time I got it, the tech was new to me just not the rest of the world.
Looking forward to hearing your review of the Gbox you've got coming. I keep seeing an ASUS product (chromecast/box?) being mentioned in various places. Did that come into consideration when you were looking into this? What made you go with the Matricom product?
You weren't kidding about being able to find basically any TV show you can remember on Kodi Moose. I've been trying to come up with some of the most obscure stuff I can remember from my younger days and within seconds I've got every season staring me in the face.
Not that I'm going to suffer through Chips, Threes Company or Beverly Hillbillies again, but it's pretty impressive.
Couple questions I have, if we were to 'cut' the cable, we'd have to get one of these for each tv correct, as we currently have 3 Rogers set top boxes. Also, is there any definitive links re: live hockey games, live local news? Seems to be the biggest concern with the little I've read about it.
Lastly, a list of the best/ most used / must have addons. 1channel, etc. I'm still very new about all this and trying to educate myself more
Really love this thread though, it has provided me with a lot of info. Thanks for the help

Yep, that would appear to be the same product that Moose is talking about. Interesting that it only got 3.5/5 stars in the reviews, but I rarely put much stock in web reviews.
The main grumbles I noticed in the reviews appear to be the power cord for some reason, and the remote control which sounds like it was pretty cheaply made. I just saw the wireless mini keyboard available for $16 today so I'm not sure if that's the one people are talking about.
I'm pretty new to this realm as well, so I can't say I have any answers regarding hockey or local news but that would be a nice feature. When I started looking into this the other day it seems there's so much information to digest/available it can take time to take it all in.
I would assume you have to get three boxes. Not sure how that would work out in terms of bandwidth if you were streaming three different programs at once.
I agree though this thread has been a good read for me over the past week or so. Finally made me make the decision to go cable-tv'less.
Thanks for the reply, as for the reviews, I think ppl are just nitpicking. I'm pretty sure this device is Rock solid.
I have a basement, living room, and bedroom tv which is why I asked, but almost never would more then one be running at the same time, just depends on where we are. I'm going to look into which are the best remotes to get, but an likely going to order this, and just run it alongside my wdtv and Rogers box until I get the hang of it. Although, just replacing my old wdtv would be enough as the does everything it does, plus way more. I could also cancel Netflix I suppose also. With that and cable I'd be saving $100/month. Something to think about.

Yep, people on the interweb whine. A lot. It's getting enough positive reviews to make me think it's solid as well.
We've got a wdtv live as well, but since we've got Netflix free for a month the wdtv hasn't been used at all. I'm thinking of selling the wdtv for whatever I can get for it and ordering one of these things as the wdtv would just be redundant.
I was actually surprised when I went to the local cable supplier to dump cable tv and increase our internet package. I actually thought there would be some of the usual resistance "let's talk about this/what could we do better" kind of thing. Not one burp of hesitation. Done by noon the next day, no questions asked.
I noticed this as one of the "people who are buying this are also buying" items. I've also been hearing that when you're setting the box up, connecting a keyboard makes life a lot easier. Maybe that's why this is becoming an often bought accessory?
The earlier link from ebay you posted didn't mention it.

My kids' Nexus was running out of space so I ran the Fresh Start program to reset it and only put the Genesis on it.

Too bad they didn't show kodi/xbmc as a search term in the graph.

<Mumbles something something about buying current technology something something....>
Should be here today or tomorrow. I liked that it will play any app in the google play store. Can't wait to play clash of clans on the big screen.
Not that I'm going to suffer through Chips, Threes Company or Beverly Hillbillies again, but it's pretty impressive.
I honestly think that was the last show on TV that my Dad found funny, but he couldn't stop calling him Jack Ripper for some reason.
I just recently found out about this xbmc/kodi thing. Surprisingly as I consider myself somewhat techy, and this has been out forever.
I've never been an android fanboy. Always had apple for phones etc, and been using a wdtv for years now and I love it.
This was the device I was told is suppose to be the highest of highest quality as of now. Octocore processor etc etc. http://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00PT5DVLQ?vs=1.
