Myself personally have not been working on my game in the past 6 months and I think most serious players know that trends appear and it's important to be up to date with the latest theories and ideas to make relevant posts. Had a lot of personal changes come up (new job, house) so I have found my time to add to this forum has deminshed a lot. I do scan the board regularly and try to add bits when I can about general topics but at this point I don't feel qualified to answer strategy posts as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong though, live games haven't really changed all that much in the past 2 years so a lot of the info on this board is relevant. As for online submissions that's a totally different beast.
Came out of hibernation just to chime in on the thread.
Being an outsider looking in, I do not see the site ever failing. However, if it is to fail, it is for reasons other than lack of poker content.
Personally, I joined the forum back in 2007 in search of local home games (as I am not much of a casino person) with the sole intention to hopefully further my own skillsets of the game in a leisurely but highly competitive environment. As I have stated many times, as long as my personal experience remains "fun", I will endeavour to try my best to partake and contribute to the cause despite my limited knowledge. However, the minute it no longer serves that same purpose, walking away from the game and/or the site itself becomes the only viable option.
Wetts, I respect you immensely. I have never met a more classier individual both on and off the felt. You have knowledge of the game way beyond your years and I often say that I could learn from guys like you just by observing what you do best at the tables. In my limited time playing with you, I have never experience you acting inappropriately towards me or show ill frustration towards any of your competitors. You treat the game and your fellow competitors with the utmost respect despite their skill level. The characteristics you project at the tables, IMHO, is the epitome of what an aspiring poker player should be. All in all, you made my experience fun and for that reason alone, I am motivated to return and contribute as best I can.
Unfortunately, I could not express the same with other members of the forum. Take Ching Hill as an example. And for the record, AJ runs a pretty good shift and I truly enjoy playing with most of the players involved. However, once in awhile, there would be certain individuals berating you for playing a hand or a particular situation incorrectly to the point it comes across very offensive. The term "stupid f***" comes into mind among other things. Sure, I expect those same comments from strangers playing in a major event at a casino but for what I would consider as a local $50 weekly poker gathering amongst friends, I am somewhat disappointed. Despite my success at Ching Hill over these years, I have no choice but to walk away from the game as the experience is no longer "fun" for yours truly. It is simply not worth my time and effort to come out as I would rather drive to Brantford and play the regular 2/5 limit game.
In summary, it is not the lack of content on this site that worries me. It is the people that deters you from ever coming back and contributing.
I can't say I have ever had the same experience with the Hill group. I've always been very glad to have a regular game with a host as great as AJ. I really miss those games and hope they start up again.
Maybe it was me that said that? If so, sorry. I certainly wouldn't be serious in saying something like that at a home game unless it was directed at AJ and he expects that from me. I expect if AJ was aware of this, he would have taken the guy aside to have a chat about it. If the league starts up again, I hope you will give it another chance.
To me, what was described at Ching Hill seems like the exception, rather than the rule. Every time I have played a forum game and I mean every time, I always have a great time. I will roll my eyes at some of the beats I've taken but have never berated a player, its their money, they can play however they like.
And some people react to the situation immediately and say stuff in the heat of the moment. Doyle Brunson, on High Stakes Poker, called one of the players an "idiot". And I think Doyle is one of the people I try to emulate at the table. He did apologize next season to the player, though.
Took me 3 weeks to get through this thread. Fucking Blackberry.
I don't really disagree with any of the points made by people in this thread, aside from obvious trolls being obvious.
I think poker being on a downswing, combined with people's lives getting in the way (mother #&@$ing responsibilities) and people on the internet being people on the internet (see: bashing newbs, crushing dreams) have caused traffic to decline.
Personally, I think I've played maybe 50 hands in 2 years... Ever since I bought the house... Fack! Stupid thing is taking away from my prime gambling years! To hell with this! I'm moving under a bridge near a Starbucks so I can live rent free while still using their WIFI... Why does this story sound so damned familiar...
I do miss the game but I don't miss the lack of control I had over my anger for it. Fact is, life changes, priorities change. Work sucks the life out of you, leaving you a souless corpse aimlessly wandering the decrepit landscape of your post apocolyptic future, broken dreams lying in pools by the highway of lost souls. Sorry, kind of went to a weird place there for a minute...
TL;DR version: poker fun, trolls bad, life stupid, gimme cookie

Wat about those who pray to the poker gods?
He shall be named Wetts and he shall bring us the liketh button if we remain humble in his service
