  • I think for every question like this, there are 10 people thinking it....

yeah but for 1/100 are we actually doing it.

Very true....but I think there are a lot of people on this board that have first hand knowledge of pro players that are friends etc...so we hear the good and bad (hidden brag..lol)
  • I dunno, playing online with cash doesn't really suit me it seems.. I mean sure maybe once and a while but not regularly.

I popped in the casino tonight no room though that's to be expected it's a Friday night afterall.

If you mean an online casio do you really think there are pro online casino players? And how can you be pro but only play once in a while? Isn't that the very definition of a rec player?

I meant once in a while online.

Eh we'll see once I put some money into my pokerstars accoutn
  • Went to Caesar's Windsor. Dropped $300 in about 90 minutes. Once on a brutal call by opp who caught stupid lucky for $100, then pissed away my $200 that I had built into $320 by not being able to fold KsKd on board 7s10sJsQd10h against an opp who I knew to be uber tight who ridiculously overbet the river. I brushed off the loss as it was money I could afford to lose. The better half was stunned. Couldn't understand how I could not even blink after that. Told her it was probably easier to handle since it was my dumd move lol.

Anyhow, point of the story is, make sure you can both afford to lose the money and brush off the loss but not the lesson if/when you do.

    (A) Check . . .
    (B) Not so much . . . but I'm trying, Lord :-[
  • Going pro takes such a sick amount of work I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not already halfway there with a ton of determination. I wouldn't actually take a shot at going pro unless you have at least had back to back 6-figure years not playing pro. Even then it's close as to whether you really should or not. You're always gonna hit a downswing that's worse than the worst one you've had, but you have to expect it and know how to deal with it as far as bankroll management, psychology, and working on your game.

I'd say don't try to become a pro. Try to becoming a winning player, try to move up stakes and maintain being a winning player. One day you might just find that you're really close.

EDIT: And don't try to become a lolive pro, start online. Way more tools to help you improve and track your actual results without putting in your own biases.
  • Well I've decided on at least on goal.

I won't go play at a casino until I win one of the weekly big slick tourneys I go to..so I think I got a little bit of time.

I don't know what it is maybe you guys share the same opinion but I just really enjoy the live game more

Well on this we agree however it depends on your goals and reasons for playing. A pro will be looking to maximize profits and I don't think you can do that without playing a sigificant amount online. Personally I have no intention of making big money so the challenge, fun and excitement of live poker is best for me. I do play online but only small stakes, 25 and 50NL cash and $2. - $10. sng/mtt's so will never get rich that way, especially with low volume. Making money other ways is much easier imo...
  • Also I am looking forward to see how I match up with you elites soon.. I play to play in the home games tourny tomorrow.
  • $25-$50 low stakes? >_>

lol, 25NL is .10/.25 $25. max buy in. 50NL is .25/.50 $50. max buy in. I flip flop depending on mood...

you are new to poker and likely aren't even a winning player yet, why would you be thinking about going pro?

Kind of hard to go 'pro' when you have no bankroll. Its more, looking for something to do between job interviews.

if there are only 12ish players, its not really representative of a real live tournament.
  • Still need alot more practice.

I came in 46th out of a tourny of 9000 last night starting stack 1500.. could have done alot better but no real incentive to go on as I already moved on and it was 4:30 in the morning.

Later on today though I really screwed it up.. I dunno if any of you play in the Pokerstars Big Game tourneys but I was in the 3rd and Final(Pretty sure it's odd) round today and had around 260k in chips.. and I couldn't finish it off the cut off was 200 and I finished in the 250 range or so.. I've just now gotten over it a bit.

50K starting.. had I just folded every single hand I probably still would have made it.. stupid, stupid, stupid.
  • I don't recommend anyone try it. Very few people can win at poker consistently. It's a negative sum game.

Moral of the story, play for fun with money you can afford to lose and you can't go wrong...and stay in school!
  • It begins!

I won a sit and go today and won 23 bucks.

It is decided.. I must take out a loan and enter the world series of poker

    lol..Love the enthusiasm!
  • Can I get an autograph so I can say I knew you when? gl.
  • Sure.

I don't think I could do this online though.. just frustrating.. everyone is sooooooo slow.

People can take their time in person too but it's just different.
  • 10 tables ftw

IIRC, didn't I bust you in the Forum tourney Sunday night? That is an indicator of DOOM for your career right there. Ask around . . .
  • ^^^

Yup, if Milo can beat you, you don't stand a chance. :D
  • But I beat Hellmuths Mole.

    HELLMUTHS MOLE!

and now Im in a rough spot.
  • Oh god, going pro is my dream. I'm 20 and actually done college (a shocker for even me xD). Am in the process of looking for a job as an Art Director in toronto ad agencies while just starting to play online. I'm not even going to think about going pro until I'm 25 and have a very, very respectable bankroll online.

If by that age I'm not close to a few goals I've set for myself bankroll/tourney wise, I'm not trying.
  • Anyway it's just dumb to go pro, since you could always have poker as a part time job. You will enjoy the game more and probably be a tougher opponent and you will never have any financial worries to drag you down.
  • With all this talk of going "Pro" I would love to hear a definition of what a pro is. To me it is someone who makes their chosen profession a career vs an amateur who may do the same thing as a part time "hobby". It is not just someone who makes a few bucks on the side. Now what do all the young folks who don't have full time jobs think is a "pro"? A pro is also someone who declares their income and pays taxes on it as such.
