Compuease's WSOP seniors tracking thread

Ok, guys (and gals), I have created this thread to update anyone who is interested on status re my Vegas trip June 17th to 25th. I will update this thread whenever I have internet access and update via twitter periodically. (see link below)

Current tentative schedule:

Jun 17th, fly Spirit Air (out of Detroit) at 8:10 pm, arriving in Vegas at 9:45 local time.
Pick up rental car.
June 17-21 staying at Excalibur.
June 21-25 staying at Gold Coast (next door to Rio)
June 18th, 12 noon, Golden Nugget PLO $240. buyin. 12000 chips, 40 min blinds.
June 19th, 12 noon, Golden Nugget O8 Hi/Lo $240. buyin. 12000 chips, 40 min blinds
June 20th, 12 noon, Golden Nugget Seniors NLH $240. buyin. 12000 chips, 40 min blinds
June 21st, 12 noon, Binions NLH $160. buyin. 5000 chips, 30 min blinds
June 22nd-24th (hopefully), 12 noon, RIO WSOP Seniors NLH $1000. buyin. 3000 chips, 60 min blinds

The above GN tournaments may be changed for more Binions or perhaps Caesars $330's as the GN reviews so far have slammed the tournament dealers as being really poor. Caesars has also greatly improved their structures and dropped the 10K WSOP main event seat from the prize pool. I may play a Venetian $330 on the 23rd or 24th if (perish the thought) I bust out of the WSOP. I also may fill in with Venetian 7pm evening tournaments or GN's 9pm bankroll builders. Probably will play very little cash.

June 27th, 10:17 fly out of Vegas to Detroit, hopefully having to worry about getting my 30% withholdings back.

Twitter link for regular short updates.

  • Looks like a pretty full schedule. There's a good chance our paths will cross a couple of times - I'll probably be playing in the June 21 Binion's Poker Classic and the WSOP Seniors Event. My schedule is somewhat fluid since I hope to play a few Venetian Deep Stacks and those (hopefully) will be 2-day events. I'll PM you with my current schedule. I arrive in Vegas June 19 and my son is joining me two days later.
  • Good luck in Vegas and at the WSOP Seniors event. Last year the Seniors event had just over 2200 players and I am sure that they are expecting a similiar field this year.
  • Jun 17th, pick up rental car??

good luck on the trip; when I was in Vegas last March, I didn't really find a need for a car and I stayed at three different hotels over six days.

Well, this is about my 10th trip in the last few years (3 times last year), and this is the 1st rental car so I think I deserve it. :) A couple of reasons, when I'm down partying with others I don't need it but this is business, don't want the hassle of shuttles, buses, or taxis. If I was just on the strip it would be ok, but I'm planning on playing downtown, the strip and of course the Rio which is well west of the strip.
  • Seniors tourney update:
    4 players are sleeping
    3 are drooling on themselves
    6 have wet their pants
22 are wondering when the buffet starts...

Speaking of when the buffet starts, I'm hungry....

Not sure if I should :) or :(

  • Don't forget to nap before each tourny.... tee hee hee!!!

  • lol, well I am the donkament king.. I played my usual Excal 9am warmup this morning. We chopped 5 ways for $300. 5th place shorter stack took $230. 3 of the 4 chip leaders were Canadian.. I told them about pokerforum.ca Maybe I could make a living of just these! Not bad for a $20. tournament. This is now a single rebuy tournament, there were 62 players and about 25-30 rebuys, which I did not need. It's a good way to start the day. Gotta keep the heater going...

On a side note, sat with a guy on the flight down who is also playing the seniors and has played it a couple of times before and plays many of the $1500. events. He told me that the Seniors is way tougher as the experience level is quite deep. Maybe I should have played a 1500. lol.. He did give me several tips though....

    Only at 3am......... :)
  • Played the Binions 6pm deepstack, $125., 10K chips 20 min blinds for 1st 3 levels, 30 min for the rest. Real nice structure and will play again. Lots of real poor calling stations at my table, best player (BP) (I think) other than myself of course was 2 to my right.

Comments welcome on how I played the hand please.

Level 5, 200/400 25 ante, I have approx 11.5K, BP has me covered.

3 limpers including BP to me on the button with two red 4's, I call, both blinds complete. Pot is 2650.

Flop Qc, 4c, 5d - checked to BP we bets 1700, I call looking to play a big pot on the turn if club doesn't come. I know it looks risky but with these calling stations I was pretty sure someone with a naked flush draw would call me if I pushed. BB also calls, pot now 7750.

Turn 5h, BINGO..... BP bets 3500, I push for 9.4K, he says he has to call. Turns over Ac,5c for flush draw which wasn't any good on paired board.

River Q to make him higher boat.... damn that hurt, just glad it wasn't in the WSOP.... I am almost certain that I would have moneyed again if my hand held there. I would have had about 26K and an M of over 30 at that point.

On to the next one..... :)
  • Went to the Rio earlier this aft just to get a feel. It is amazing for sure, lots of satellites, all levels going regularily. I watched almost a whole 1050 one go and half the players were awful, no idea of push fold mode at all.... Can't believe at that level it coud be so bad. Buddy you will love the Rio sats, look like gold to me, and I don't mean Jamie... Not sure if I should play them or not as I prefer to use some of these other multi table tournaments as my own personal satellites...... :) Anybody want to buy half of me for 2 or 3 of the smaller ones ($125 or 175's)?
  • Yeah..Rio satellites players are mosly worst than $5 SnG players online...all you really need is an understanding of the push-bot strategy and you'll do fine. Obv. the various is huge but it's +ev to grind those out.

As for the hand...the hand played itself. I probably would've raised the flop (but the stack sizes are kinda weird to be raising there, so calling is probably better) but I think the way you played is definitely fine as well.
  • I think you both played it fine. Both of you loved the flop, same with the turn, and you got all the money in as an 84% favourite.

Did you see Rio checking passports or handing out tax forms after the $1,050 satellite? Next time you go to the Rio, can you do me a favour and ask the satellite desk if there are any tax withholding for any of the satellites?

I wonder if that means they stopped running the two cheapest satellites - $65 and $110 (double winner).

I think I'm going to head over there now, to check on SirWatts. They are asking for a passport for non US residents. I will ask about the satellite tax situation. I will also confirm the satellite buyins, I only saw the ones above listed on their sheets. Maybe I'll twitter it back... or wait until tomorrow....

More info here, looks like Watts nusted because when I got there they were down to 14 and there was no sign of him...

I clarified the passport thing as confirmed by the WSOP registration desk. As a Canadian if you already have a valid Harrah's card you do not need a passport to register for a WSOP event. However if you don't already have a card then you do to get a new one. I really don't think that should be an issue as aren't we all required to have one to cross the border anyways?
As for the satellites, they actually start at $65. and go up, the podium lady told me they will run virtually any level you want.
  • Can they really tax lammers chips?

No, they aren't taxing lammers, I asked that specific question last night... Buddy is set to go, he'll be right at home... lol
  • Reading this thread sure has me excited about going down... I wish I had more time down there... Looking forward to it.
  • Played the 1pm bankroll builder tournament at Golden Nugget today. $125. for 8000 chips, 30 min blinds, great structure for the price. 41 runners, finsihed 5th for $335. Made a stupid all in steal in the cutoff with KJ, & 9BB. Was called by KQ, Q on flop, GG me... Tomorrow playing the GN Seniors at noon, 12000 chips 40 min blinds, $240. buyin. The age limit has been lowered to 50 from 55, I need to catch up with Gogie to let him know as he is over 50 but under 55.

  • Gogie and I are playing the Golden Nugget Seniors today at noon, $240, 12K chips, 40 min blinds..Good warmup for Mondays WSOP. Probably both of us, along with his son, who arrives tomorrow am, will play Binions Classic event tomorrow.
  • Why was it "stupid"? Congrats for the tax-free cash.

  • Just a heads up that Sucks-calibur's dealer machines are getting fired soon! Excalibur has contacted the human dealers they fired last fall and offered them their old jobs back, with a start date of around July 15. Excalibur was one of my favourite places to play a cash game during last year's WSOP, so I look forward to finally playing there again after this year's WSOP.
