n catch  All the parties were quoted in that movie:
Liberals - "Now, offer me money. ... Power too. Promise me that. ... Offer me everything I ask for. "
NDP - "We'll never succeed. We may as well die here"
As for the over/under in realty I think this Government could fall in a month or two as the platform is not really supported by any other parties. I imagine the other parties will put their efforts to support this government just enough for them to show their true reform/alliance ways. The Liberals will be back in power next election and like the commentators said on CBC the Liberals will pick up 100 plus seats in a campaign that they lost day after day.
True over/under I would say 15- 18 months or so. Late Spring Election 2008.
Best thing about the minority is that it will keep the sweeping/radical changes in check. Harper will need support from the opposition to get things through which means that the Conservatives will be limited in the amount of damage they can do. Damage might be a little too strong, but at least there will be a limit on how far/fast they can tear this country down and start to "rebuild" it.
It could have been far worse, at least like Adam says with a minority they will be kept in check, thank god for that! Now the Liberals can elect and new party leader which should happen quickly and they can get back on track and ready for the next election! I'll take 18 months.
for every person in this country who decides not to vote, the party in power gets their vote. even if you deface your voting ballot its still better then being lazy and then complaining until the next election
in oshawa there was not much choice
liberal-enough said, they are a bunch of lying thieves
NDP-they have a few good ideas, what the conservatives wont do these guys will
communist-i hate communists and everything they standfor
conservative-what the NDPs wont do these guys will
im gonna be honest and tell you who i voted for...... i liked the blues and the oranges for both of their good points . their quality in my likelist was 50/50 in their own way. conservatives want to make our military, border guards, and legal system respectable on the world poker table, and of courswe NDP are all about good college prices, public child care, and not screwing up the health system. so i closed my eyes, pointed my pencil and made my 'X" (the way i arranged my ballot, i could only pick NDP, Cons. or the table)
i folded up my ballot without looking and handed it in. i dont know exactly who i voted for, but it was wither orange or blue.
the moral of the story.....
get the f*** up off your ass and vote. if you dont, the party in power gets your vote
our forefathers answered the call and stuck canadas foot up hitlers ass. if it were not for them, we would all be speaking the deutsche and be conscripts in the german army. (dont get me wrong im proud of my 33% german heritage) but not the nazi era.
the least we can do to respect what ww2 canada did, is to get up, sacrifice 42 seconds of our day, and draw an "x" on a piece of paper
if i had my way, canada would be like in australia where not voiting in the federal election would be against the law, and remembrance day would be a national holiday where its illegal to do anything in public but go to a local ww2 memorial, or at least stop on the road for a moment of silence.
I guess this is what power does to people. Stephen Harpers first course of action. I am sure this Accountability Act will be a piece of work.
Former Liberal David Emerson defects to Tories
CTV.ca News Staff
Former Liberal industry minister David Emerson has crossed the floor to sit in Stephen Harper's Conservative cabinet.
The Vancouver MP and former head of lumber giant Canfor stunned onlookers when he arrived at Rideau Hall shortly before the Tory cabinet was to be announced.
A short while later he was sworn in as the new Conservative Minister of International Trade and the Minister responsible for the Olympic Games in Vancouver in 2010.
Snatching Emerson could be seen as Conservative retribution for the defection of Belinda Stronach to the Liberals in exchange for a cabinet post.
At the time, Stephen Harper harshly criticized Stronach and several Conservatives demanded laws forcing floor-crossers to go back to the electorate for another mandate.
Actually your wrong (Although I agree that your basis and integrity is correct)
The new Accountability package will prevent MPs from crossing the floor; hence changing the structure of a functioning HOC.
BUT - This is a loophole. Emerson will come into the government as a Conservative. He is not crossing the floor, and therefore not affecting a functioning government. After the dissolution of parliament there is no function government until this morning when the new Cabinet is sworn in. Technically, again a loophole, Emerson has not crossed the floor or changed the government.
In Canada most people have forgotten that we do not vote for Stephen Harper or Paul Martin - our system is based on voting for local candidates based on their credentials. Emerson is still Emerson.
I do however, think this was a strategic disaster for Stephen Harper.
In my own opinion I can only think of two reasons why he would do this:
1. Liberals have no grounds for recourse - being that they gave Belinda Stronach a cabinet position with an operational HOC in place.
2. All decent Liberal leadership candidates are reluctant to run for party leadership. Possibly the best remaining candidate is Scott Brison. He defected to the Liberal party - so will have to be very careful in criticizing the recent Emerson move.

This loophole may be technically correct, but it's ethically flawed. Emerson campaigned on the Liberal platform, and was elected on the Liberal platform. While I support the conservatives, I believe it is a violation of our democratic process for a candidate not to fulfill the mandate they were elected for (without a by-election or similiar).Â
There is (apparently) a difference from Stronach in that the Liberals courted her, while Emerson initiated things with the conservatives. However, based on the Conservative reaction to Stronach before, I think they should have refused his request. Also, this is not a few years into a term where a candidate's view have had some time to change. The election just happened, so Emerson could have switched parties prior to the election.
I am a very disappointed and embarrassed Conservative today.
Trev if you voted on the total Conservative platform then your embarassment shouldn't be too bad as you voted for the total package of promises and even thou this is a horrible start to their government they could still pull through for you.
The embarassment should be for the approximate 1 million or more Canadian's ( my estimate) that voted Conservative only on the idea of a need for change as they have now elected a government that (IMHO) will do a far worse job then the government that was in it's place. Gee doesn't this remind us of a certain Premier that won on change only to raise taxes in his first budget.
AS long as we have our health and the CPF I think we will be okay. Oh don't forget the beer!! MMM Beer!
I cannot comprehend why Haper who campaigned on integrity would make this choice.
Will be very interesting to see his justification.
It will also be interesting to see the Liberal response.
Many Liberals supporting Belinda because she choose to honour her value system; changing parties because the values of Stephen Harper did not align with her own. Will they give the same respect to Emerson?

I agree with the first part (voting against a party without thought for what your putting in it's place is silly) and disagree with the second part (that's simply your opinion of the Conservatives), and you already know my opinion. Â However, I think another "They're bad" "no they're not" discussion really distracts from the current issue of how they handled Emerson and has no bearing on it (unless you're simply starting up the original "platform" debate again).
I am now very impressed with Harper - as should all Canadians be.
Emerson was chose as a Cabinet minister, to give better representation to all of Canada - particularly Vancouver BC.
This is not a Liberal vs. Conservative issue, rather Harper chose Emerson because he is a great candidate - irregardless of Party.
This is very common in countries that do not regularly elect Majority governments.
When you have a minority government it is essential to solicit help from the other parties - this prevents the need for an election every 18 months because loose coalitions are formed.
Lets see how this plays out - I hope its as strategic and intelligent as it sounds.

harper, cmon people. CMON. WHY? isnt he a mini bush puppet?
That's the average number of months a Minority Government serves.
We'll have to see the platform that Harper unveils, then who will form alliances in sessions. IE Tories + BQ vs Libs+ NDP or whatever.
Any predictions as to who will be the new opposition leader, when Paul Martin quits as Leader of the Liberal Party?
JohnnieH
Belinda Stronach of course. That's the real reason she crossed the floor to the Liberals.
