  • Hey Buddy,

Ill be down June 24-29 If you can think of any not to miss tournaments let me know. I'll keep my eye out for ya. I like event #69 @ planet Hollywood on the 25th 50k Guarantee 15,000 starting stack 30 min levels.
  • Shopsy2, here's the list of tournaments I was considering playing, including at M Resort from June 23-26 - http://www.pokerforum.ca/f10/2016-wsop-dates-33260/#post399370.

Be sure to leave some of your bankroll for the World Cup of Cards at Playground Poker from August 18 to September 14, where we get to keep 100% of our winnings.

  • Tomorrow is the day I jump on a jet plane for LV. I leave in the am and arrive late morning Vegas time. I prefer this option to the flight that lands in Vegas around 1030pm. I'm rooming with Matt from the OPT crew. He hosts the OPT tourneys at his home that Steve K runs up in Orangeville. We will be staying at Harrah's (first time) since I got 5 days out of a total of nine comped through my Total Rewards.
First big event is the Hollywood Poker Championship that I qualified for at Rama. I will try and post updates here. Payperview and BF have some equity from the Rama BAP. So good luck to us.
There will be a few of us at the HPO, including Matt - so it should be a good time. I also know a few other guys that are down for the WSOP. I don't know just yet if I will play any events at the Rio. Plan is lots of cash games and some PH tournaments for sure.
Ellis Island beer and ribs is also in the cards.
If I survive I will post a TR upon my return to the land of maple syrup...
  • Best of luck 22's. I will be checking in here often hoping for positive updates. Sending some run good.

Good Luck at all games your playing. Have a great time and I will look forward to a TR or updates.
Let me know if you run any other baps while down there. I'll try to login more often to see if there is.
  • Mini TR: DirtArse & I were staying in an Airbnb house in Henderson, and we ate in the restaurants recommended by gobboboy, etc, with my favourite being Delmonico Steakhouse near the Palazzo. DirtArse decided to fly back to T.O. on Saturday on Business Class. I asked the car rental company if I could extend DirtArse's one-week rental, and first they said it would be U$200/day due to EDC! :O They eventually agreed to extend it at the same rate as before.

All my other friends had gone busto after playing table games & -EV donkaments, :( so two of them asked to take over DirtArse's bedroom. I asked them to make sure they like the house as the host wanted me to prepay for the remainder of the week. They both said it was fine, so after I drove them to Bachi Burger and a grocery store, I prepaid the host. However, after we had all taken a nap, they both suddenly changed their mind that the house was too hot for them and would rather borrow money to return to a Strip hotel! We asked the host for a refund and my money was returned except for the Airbnb penalty.

We checked out at 2 pm today and drove with our refrigerated groceries to the hotel, but it did not have a fridge. I noticed that the hotel had the +EV "WIN CARDS" promotion (that I had taught DirtArse back in 2008 when he offered a free Business Class flight on this forum to educate him about Las Vegas) so I suggested it to them while they were waiting for more money to be EMTed from Canada. One spent the $30 to get $45 worth of betting chips, but lost it all at craps, and went on tilt that the it must be a scam. I started off with $10 to get $15 worth of chips, and even though I had forgotten how craps work, I luckboxed and multiplied my initial investment by 14x.

My roommates don't have money for expensive restaurants, so we may just go to a buffet tonight. Two resorts near the buffet also have WIN CARDS so I'll see if I can Bingo my way again to a free buy-in to the Binion's Seniors Event tomorrow with 40,000 starting chips.

A guy at the pub yesterday told me how great this steakhouse is at the Palazzo...keep winning at craps and I will let you take me there...see you in Vegas!

I've eaten at Delmonico and I've also tried Cut (both are in the Venetian/Palazzo complex). Both are outstanding but if I had to pick one (and cost was not a factor) I'd go with Cut without hesitation.

  • I busted at level 10 last night in a 50k + pot with A 3 spades on a 3h 4h 3c flop. The PF raiser had c-bet after I checked from the small blind and another player shoved. I called. Villian rolled over 7c 4c. Turn was Qc and river a 10c for a runner runner flush and I'm done. Gross.... This one hurt.

I had been card dead since the dinner break but this pot would have put me right back in the thick of it...
  • That is really gross. Runner runner and you take it in the pooper.
  • Yes. Right in the pooper. Bummer.

  • Vegas update...shipped $7100 US at Aria last night in the $250 daily tournament. 230 something runners....Started at at 7pm. We chopped it this morning around 9am with 6 players left. I ran a 15k starting stack up to 820k for the chip lead and no. 1 spot.
  • Well done! Congrats.

Awesome. Glad to see you found some run good. Nobody wanted to play it out and forget the chop. It was only 9am.
  • Congrats........
  • Here's the trip report I posted on Facebook:

In the final $555 event I played, there were two ladies in the final table and when there were seven left, I found out that three of us were Canadians. When it was down to the final five, Doug Holland (in photo below) proposed a five-way chop but he wanted first place bragging rights to his friends and $100 extra from the rest of us. :o

    11694909_896906600426023_1172302079073058883_n.jpg?oh=ad6284de87b0dc925142e3d367cca305&oe=57F3F819

A couple of the finalists objected that he wasn't even the chipleader so why should he get first place and extra money, but the female chipleader had no objections. I would never make a deal below my ICM equity but since I was the shortest stack at the time, I proposed the following: I would give $100 from my even chop money to Doug, he would be officially first place, and I would be officially fifth place (since I care more about the money than bragging rights) with no 30% tax. Everybody was happy with my proposal and we shook each other's hands to seal the deal.

However, when the Tournament Director informed Doug that him taking official first place would have tax implications, he broke his own deal that he kept insisting on! The other four of us were :rage:

Here are a couple more examples of the HUGE impact of the >= 30% taxes. A couple of amateur friends got lucky in high-rake turbo donkaments with a big first place prize, but forgot to factor in the taxes when negotiating their deals. One agreed to a multi-way chop for ~U$30K but he ended up officially getting first place of U$48,683. So he was taxed 30% on this first place money that he didn't even get, for almost $15K or 50% of his actual cash taken away! :arghh:

Another friend made a three-way chop at $19K, but he was officially declared first place for $28,333 that he didn't get, and was taxed for the full U$8,429.

So what eventually happened, you played it out?
  • When I chopped at Aria WPT daily I was taxed on the exact amount of money that I received although I finished 1st overall as I was chip leader. The tournament director facilitated the chip chop and even did the numbers for us players.
BF... Are you saying these people got taxed on money they never received? It's all done on official tax forms...is it not? That sounds wrong and would likely be illegal...no? Also, when they claim it back are you saying they will get money back from the IRS and if they are successful - they will actually get more money back than they were entitled to vis a vie the chop??

I chopped at Caesars a few years ago. They would not "facilitate" any chop. Instead each player had to sign for a specific spot, collect the payout for that spot and then go back to the table where all of us who chopped put the money in the middle and divided it up as we had agreed to. If any tax forms were required for a particular payout then they were issued based on the formal payout structure, not the chopped amounts. My understanding is this is the way all HET properties deal with chops. I've chopped elsewhere (Venetian, for example) where they completely facilitated the chop, including basing everything on the amounts agreed to by the players and paying out the "chopped" amounts.
  • Yes, as I posted on Facebook that night, Doug bluff 3-bet all-in with only Q9o vs. my raise with little fold equity, and after I confirmed how much was in the pot and how much more to call, I made the correct call with AQ. I was good until he got a gutshot straight on the river.

He said that he had already made up his mind to jam once he peeked at his Q9, without even taking into account my raising range, the players behind him, or the juicy pot odds I would be getting to not fold; but I do want villains to keep making bad decisions in the long-run and occasionally get lucky. The female chipleader got 5th, I was 4th, and a different player won the championship. Like most casinos, M Resort will not facilitate deals - and you will be fully taxed on your official finish - with the few exceptions of Aria, Venetian and Playground.

  • That was how it was always done, as most casinos took the view that they had no control or care what the players did with their money after being paid out. It was probably only when customer-focused rooms like Venetian and Playground granted players' wishes that their actual cash was recorded instead of the official payout.

Canadians can really get screwed by buying into the 30%-taxed open US donkaments. My friend's Form 1042-S will show gross income of U$48,448 even though the actual cash he withdrew on his last day at the Rio was much less after the U$14,534 taxes. :( He loves travelling to -EV US tournaments and was losing the past three years, until he ran like Andre De Grasse this summer. He will be a winning player this year so he will not have U$48,448 in eligible gambling losses for the remainder of the year to LEGALLY offset the taxes.

He made another blunder of flying to Borgata to buy into WPT satellites without asking about the -EV tax, then he had to pay 30% cash for winning a piece of paper with no cash! :rage: He actually had more after-tax winnings after we both won >= three $5,000 WPT FPC satellites in 2015 than after the Rio Daily turbo.

  • So has anybody on here axtually applied for their tax with holdings back from the IRS for a poker score?

Did you do it yourself? Use a 3rd party? How long did it take? Etc...etc

Canadians are entitled to get it back - so I don't see what the big deal is, at least in my case. I'm gonna use some of my poker tournament receipts.

My roommate from LV said that H&R Block does it for $50.00.

I will find out this week..
