2016 Las Vegas Roll Call & Satellites

While there will probably be a lot less Canadians in Las Vegas this summer due to having to pay > 30% more in Canadian dollars plus the 30% tax on US tournaments, there will still be some forum, OPT, 15+ Rama and other local players going. A high proportion of the forum/OPT players that went to WSOP/WPT Montreal won money at something (e.g., SteveKerr & PocketsTwos) and had fun (e.g., 6 different people in one Airbnb), so here's the Las Vegas list with approximate dates for those who want to get together for swaps, the Riviera implosion; Las Vegas Restaurant Week, Ellis Island, & other restaurants; 2+2/Red Chip/Thinking Poker & other meetups; parties, Global Poker League's live matches, flying a drone, attractions, etc.

1) Gogie: June 9-20. Among 3 forumers playing WSOP Event #27; 90-minute meal break ~4:40 pm.

2) Wetts1012: June 12-19; WSOP Events #17, 21 & 25.

3) DirtArse: June 13-19; will smartly play mostly cash games & +EV Seniors-only tournaments.

4) BlondeFish: June 13-27+ or up to July 9; most likely to be found @ WSOP Pavilion / Satellite Room.

5) PocketsTwos: June 22 - July 1; one of >= 3 OPT members and 15 Rama players that will be playing @ U$2,500 HPO Season 4 Championship.

6) TheCoordinator: June 28 - July 5; WSOP Event #54.

7) Toronto Pimp: July 2-9.

8) jontm: July 8-11; runaway. :wink2:

  • If you want to play in any of the 69 events of the WSOP, the best way is through a satellite, such as with the OPT or Rio. I had been asking the WSOP for all the single table satellite details and they have just made them available. The best are the two-winner satellites (see bottom), which are similar to WPT Fallsview but the rake is much easier to beat. Unlike US MTTs, there is no 30% tax on satellites, and I have always been able to find players willing to exchange lammers at 100% face value.

Only $15 rake is taken from each of the $235-$635 buy-ins, so the higher buy-in you play, the lower the rake. Most players with a clue join the last-longer or bubble pool to make the rake even lower.

    $635: 2.4% rake
    $535: 2.8%
    $435: 3.4%; 2,000 starting chips for $435+
    $335: 4.5%; 1,500 chips; 20-minute levels for $335+
    $235: 6.4%
    $110 + $10: 8.3%; 1K chips; 15-minute levels (not listed by WSOP).

    I'll be playing a lot of WSOP two-winner & winner-take-all $125-$1,030 SNGs, & mega satellites.
I'm currently watching a gripsed webinar on selling action - Twitch or https://www.youtube.com/c/gripsed/live.
  • Crickets this year, where we used to have a large (>10-15) OPT team head down, most are passing this year as a function of the weak $. I'll be leaving Sunday playing the 1k on the 12th, the 3k 6max on the 14th, and the 2.5k on the 16th, for anyone interested in touching base.
  • Leaving July 2nd back either 9th or 10th. No idea what tournaments I will play , may play one or two depending on the schedule.

If anyone is gonna be there hit me up and we can grab a lunch or dinner down there.
  • Possibly heading down for July 8th-11th simply to run away from home for the weekend. Sure wifey will play a few DDS. Mostly about running away, despite shitty dollar and so forth. Just wouldn't feel right not going....
  • id go if the dollar wasnt so bad :(
  • You guys have the wrong attitude. Just imagine how many more Canadian dollars you'll have when you head home with all your winnings from Vegas. 😜
  • Just multiply by 1.3. Then subtract 30%

    Same.
  • +1. For tournament players, it's much better to first play at any of the following:
888 Playground Power Weekend next week, televised WPT Montreal, $5 million WPT Fallsview, WPT DeepStacks Canada, Grand Prix Poker Tour Canada, :-X WSOP Canada 2017, Maple Leaf Poker Tour, a reborn Canadian Poker Tour, "cheers: etc.

  • Updated OP with at least eight active members going. That free webinar with Toronto pros Nicholas "Noctus" Verkaik & Evan "gripsed" Jarvis shows a FREE Live Package Manager for anybody that wants a BAP for Vegas. I tried it out @ Bingo Buddy +EV Las Vegas. Noctus is open to suggestions so I already emailed him to add the two-winner and other WSOP satellites.

  • As mentioned I will be in Vegas June 22-July 1. The only event that is booked for sure is the $2500 HPO Championship at M Resort June 23-26. Other poker activities will be PH Phamous series, WSOP sattys, Aria daily tournies, and cash games. Free time will be spent drinking free booze, making Euro Cup and Super Bowl bets at the sport book, discussing world issues with LV hookers, and maybe turning some 160mph laps at Las Vegas Speedway in a tuned down NASCAR. First beer is on me for anyone that wants to go to Ellis Island for ribs and beans.

  • Me and a buddy are heading down for the $888, Leaving the 28th and coming back the 5th.

Anyone play at the Orleans poker room?
  • I'm willing to go back to Ellis Island, along with any of gobboboy's (aka "When you need to know the best places to eat in Vegas, trust the fat man") restaurant recommendations and Las Vegas' version of Summerlicious, such as Buddy V's at the Palazzo.

  • Jimmie frickie article on upswing poker? Either way cool vid. What I'd do for a Ellis island beer and rib platter.
  • Yes, I asked Jimmy about his dining website "Jimmy Eats Vegas" but it's still unavailable due to malware. I want to try his recommendations of Delmonico Steakhouse (only recommendation on the Strip!), Tofu Hut, Umiya Sushi, Rollin Smoke BBQ, and Bachi Burger.

  • Arrived in Vegas Thursday night and have been getting acclimated. Plan on getting warmed up for poker tonight - playing the $400 Bounty at the Venetian. Good luck, me.
  • No luck last night. Busted out 34th out of 162 runners (8 paid) and didn't win any bounties.

Only a couple of hands of note:

Early in the tournament I'd played a few hands and built my stack to ~13K (12k starting stacks). Villain on my right had obviously been drinking a bit and was playing fast and loose. He'd been in one hand where he raised to about 1200 (blinds were 100-200 I think), BB raises to 4000 and villain thought briefly before shoving. BB insta calls. Villain shows pocket 8's and BB turns over AA. Villain hits his third 8 on the turn and doubles up while knocking out BB. He proceeded to try to run over the table, shoving left and right and showng garbage as often as not. I was avoiding him for the most part, waiting to get a hand and get into it with him. Finally get AK on button, Blinds 150-300. Folded to villain. He raises to 6000. I shove. Both blinds fold and villain thinks for minute, calls and shows Q8os. AK holds up, I double up to about twice average stack. 😜

My last hand, my stack around 18000, I'm
BB, blinds 1000, 2000, ante 300. 1 limper then raised to 4200 by SB and I called with QT and limper called.
Flop KTx, SB checks, I shove, limper calls and SB folds. Limper shows QJ, turn 9 and game over.

No poker today but playing daily starting tomorrow with Wynn senior. Anyone else playing?
  • DirtArse & I are arriving too late for Wynn, but I sent you an iMessage about tonight.

  • Wynn Senior Notes
15000 starting stack. 347 runners, top 52 paid
First 3 levels I was pretty much card dead. Few hands I played we're small wins - no one wanted to look me up when I raised cause my image was way too tight. Stack at about 14,800.

Shortly after first break (level 4). Dealt AA in middle position. Blinds at 150-300 blind with 25 ante. Raised to 800 and one caller to me. I raise to 2500 and both call. Flop T52. First to act shoves, next to act pushes and I'm thinking WTF? I think for a few minutes and call. They show JJ and 55 so I'm in trouble with the set of 's. Thankfully turn brings an A and river bricks. I just about triple up to ~38K (twice avg).

Busted out with around 100 left. Blinds 600/1200 antes 200. My stack around 38000. Player on my right raised to 2600 I call with JJ and small blind shoves. Original raiser folds and I call. Villain turns over KQ. K on the flop and I get no help. I called because the guy had been making plays so I put him on a lot of hands that I could beat and I was right. Unfortunately the deck didn't agree.

Next up - Venetian Senior. Plan to catch up with BlondFish and DirtArse, who rolled into town late last night.
  • Day 1: I took videos during the Riviera implosion, then after a few hours sleep, somehow managed to make it to the end of Day 1a of the $600 Venetian event with almost 400 entries. DirtArse played 2/5 while waiting for me for 15 Levels and profited almost U$1,500. Day 2 will start on Thursday 11 am and I'm just over the average stack.

I got the WSOP to start a TWO-winner satellite interest list as they haven't run one yet this summer. :( If you're interested, please tell a satellite supervisor (such as Mike). With over 4,000 seniors playing this Friday, we should be able to find 10 players. I'm willing to buy $2,000 worth of lammers from the winner at face value.

  • Best of luck BF. I've been following the FB posts also.
  • Congrats to Gogie who made the final table of the Aria event on Thursday. 8|

In Day 2 of Venetian Event #27, I tried to make $EV-maximizing decisions instead of the wrong "just go for first place" mentality, and finished in 17th place out of almost 1,000 entries. The consolation was that it was the GTO tax-free spot and I cashed more than finishing in the final table at 10th place. :O

DirtArse, Gogie and I will be playing WSOP Event #27 starting at 10 am PST or 1 pm. A couple more friends wanted to buy a piece of me for this WSOP Seniors Event so I accepted their EMT.

  • Nice run in the Venetian. Good start to the trip. Now go scoop a bracelet!
  • Made the final table in my last two tournaments. Played the Venetian's $400 bounty tournament Wednesday night and managed to finish 8th out of 181 runners for $1270 plus $200 in bounties. Yesterday I played in Aria's Senior Tournament and again finished 8th (305 runners) for a nice $3,347. For me the notable part of this tournament was when I knocked out Marsha Wolack, the winner of the 2011 WSOP Women's Championship event, to get to the final table. She was wearing her bracelet - it looked pretty cool.

Playing these two tournaments was kind of hectic. The V tourney ended around 3 AM for me and then I was sitting in the Aria tournament at 10 AM the same morning so not much sleep the last few days. Hopefully I'm rested enough for the WSOP seniors today!
  • Great run and good luck today... Would love to be there..

Anyone play at the Orleans poker room?

The buddy is Mikey, who many people well know on this forum.

Orleans is full of grumbly locals who like to complain a lot. Not a lot of joy in that room. OTH it is the only place in Vegas other than the Venetian where you can play 4-8 O8 and up.

Free shuttle from Orleans will drop you off at the Gold Coast (next to the Rio). It continues on to the strip and drops you at the High Roller.

Soft shell crab po' boy at Big Al's Oyster bar is great.
