  • I wasn't aware golf was played by someone throwing it at you and you defend yourself by hitting it out of the air though that might be more interesting and might get the announcers to stop whispering like they were announcing someone's funeral.

spoken like someone who sucks at golf.

EDIT: and no offense, but there are a ton of baseball players that suck at hitting but are still considered "good", so your analysis of one aspect of the game requiring skill seems to be lacking.

EDIT 2: and i agree with the whispering thing. happy gilmore had the right idea.
  • To get to the majors you are a fucking good hitter. To be a good hitter at the major league level you are on another planet in ability. Just watch pitchers who are good athletes try and hit in a interleague game.
  • Sorry Trigs, the hardest thing to do in sport is hit a round ball with a round bat, squarely. It is very difficult when you realize you have a fraction of a second to make the decision where you're going to swing.

Soccer players run around a lot, but then again much of the time they are not running at full speed. And some of the time they are just standing around. No doubt it takes physical conditioning, but they still don't play 4-5 times in 7 days like NHLers do. Even in the World Cup they have 3-4 days to recuperate after every game. That's not possible in hockey.

I think it's just ridiculous to compare sports. Everyone has a different outlook. I find most soccer games way more boring than baseball. Only World Cup and Euro is of good enough quality for me to watch. MLS here in North America is as bad as going to the local schoolyard and watching grade 6s play. Ridiculously boring. And I'd rather watch a grade 6 baseball game than MLS.

don't be sorry. we can disagree :)

for the record, i never said there's no skill in hitting a ball, but "the most skilled athletes are baseball players because they can hit a ball", i just don't know if i agree with that. that's all i'm saying.
  • I didn't say that. I said soccer players use their legs and sometimes their head. Baseball players have to use their entire bodies and have to have TWO completely different skill sets, hitting (or pitching) and fielding. Hockey players do one thing, unless you count fighting as a skill. Football players are offense or defense, not both.
  • Pretty much anyone can run, jog, walk 7 miles in 90 minutes. A little bit faster than a 10min KM. Only a minimum of physical fitness is necessary for that pace. I wouldn't go by that alone to say soccer players are the most fit. If they were running full speed for the whole time, then yeah.
  • Cmon, soccer players are by far the most physically fit, and I'm a huge baseball fan.

Show me any soccer player currently playing in the world cup that looks like John Kruk, or Dioner Navarro, or CC Sabathia, or Boomer Wells.

Baseball requires a very unique skillset, that not many people have. Being physically fit is not necessarily a requirement, if you possess the right skills.

You can't get away with that in soccer.

Yeah . . . that Prince Fielder (and those like him) is a great athelete.

(again, i never said that baseball players don't possess any skill, but i question that they possess the most skills of all athletes.)

moose, you seem to be simplifying things here. first off, i'd say that baseball players have more than two different skill sets. they must be able to hit, catch, and throw. i'm not including running bases for obvious reasons (just like i won't include running for soccer players).

soccer players need to be able to pass, shoot, head, defend (all positions must defend, not just defensemen), and they must be able to pass and shoot with both feet, not just one.

so, if we were to take your perspective of number of skills they need to do well, it still seems soccer is a more skilled sport (which i don't technically agree with, but according to your argument it seems to be true). also note that i'm not including the different positions (such as goalkeeper, pitcher, etc.), i'm just looking at the "average" position.

that's not what i'm going by although that was the content of that article i posted.

i've read many articles that have assessed athleticism in athletes in all different sports, and soccer players are always faster, stronger, more flexible, etc. compared to all other athletes. maybe boxing is the only "sport" that has better athletes iirc.
  • Nasty match that saw Italy exit today. This WC is going to be the coming out party for some former also-rans.

rough game. i think uruguay deserved the win.
  • Yeah . . . but Suarez reverting to c*nt mode was a disappointment.
  • I see the national debt of Greece deepened today after they obv paid the ref very well to screw Ivory Coast and then obv blow whistle to end game 45 sec later. Good job boys.
  • "Screw" them how? That was a stonewall penalty . . . The CBC guy said it best, if it's a foul in the middle of the pitch, it's a foul in the box. Ivory Coast defender kicked at the ball and got shin instead . . . clear decision.

Not that EITHER team were playing more than 1 game after today, anyway.
  • Huh? The Greek player tripped himself.

Edit: nevermind, watched it in super slow mo and I see the contact.

    I got a hundo on Uruguay....25/1

    Go Suarez

    Go Suarez

apparently, you could have also put a 750-1 bet that suarez would bite someone during the world cup. some guy won a few grand off this bet.
  • FIFA gets it mostly right on the Suarez decision and, if results hold, Germany and the USA are on to the next round . . .

No England, no Portugal, no Italy, no Spain . . .

Knockout stages are going to produce some interesting results.
  • Uruguay goes from a coin flip odds wise against Columbia to a 4-1 dog without Suarez........fml

yup. columbia definitely has a good chance with suarez out. uruguay still has a chance to beat them, but i don't see them going past the next round.
  • Made a sensible wager, and a silly wager today with the OLG. If either wins, I will be happy.

    Wager #1 . . .

    Chile wins outright over Brazil
Mexico wins outright over Netherlands (thus guaranteeing that the Oranje will be victorious)
    Nigeria wins outright over France.

If this magic carpet ride pays off, it will be for 151.20 : 1

    Wager #2 . . .

    Colombia wins outright
Costa Rica wins outright (might redo this one to a tie)
    France wins outright
    Belgium wins outright

    Payoff = 6.85 : 1

The more I look at it, the more I like #1 as all ties.
  • That is AWESOME
  • Haha yeah great vid. I hadnt seen this one until Alex mentioned it earlier today. Pure gold.
  • I think we have a new frontrunner for best goal of the tourney. Rodriguez's volley from from the top of the box was absolutely amazing.

BTW Moose, if you watch the replay, you can see he uses his whole body. ;)
  • DEFINITELY the goal of the Cup so far, even better than RVP's. Controls it off the chest and blasts it top shelf without letting it settle. Amazing touch.
  • Holy heart attacks Batman . . . talk about heart in throat time. fortunately, the Oranje make it past the Mexicans . . . which is too bad, because they deserved better than to have Marquez be Marquez, especially at that moment.

    Still, someone has to lose.
