2013 Life goals, not poker related.

I don't think we've done this yet, so fire it up.

Standard, boring seen 'em all before for me.

Eat healthier. I eat way to much red meat. Despite the fact I hate eating fish, I will do so more regularly this year. Wife seems in on this, so I think it's a go. I will also eat more regularly and stop the boa constrictor method of skipping breakfast, sometimes skip lunch, and then eat half a cow for dinner.

Quit smoking. I've always told myself and others that I wouldn't bother trying if I didn't really want to myself. If my heart's not into it, why bother. I'm at the point where I don't even like it myself now, it's expensive, it stinks and I'm tired of fitting it into my life.

Find a solution to inevitable winter slow down of painting. I kill myself all summer long working seven days a week. I know that around here, things relatively shut down during winter months. I have to get connected to builders, developers and more contractors doing new construction or something. Be more proactive in this venture rather than just waiting for work to come to me. My wife says every winter I'm getting busier, but I just don't like the lag.

Do more serious training with my male dog. I've got a working breed line dog that thrives on intense, high drive training. Last year we put him through agility training at a relatively young age and he dominated it completely. I want to get into tracking or something similar that engages his innate skills. He needs it to have a happy fulfilled life and I owe him that. Three walks a day just isn't cutting it.

  • Good luck on the quit smoking thing and new construction sounds like a good idea. Maybe a real estate agent who deals in commercial properties can point you towards work as well.
  • Be a better Father . . . a better husband . . . and a more "balanced" person overall.
  • My goal this year is to file my taxes before the due date.
  • Live the dream, moose.
  • I am going to continue to be more balanced in my life.

I (essentially) quit playing online in 2012 and my life EV went up exponentially. I made some really great friends through OPT, specifically Steve and Greg, and our liveament travels have been great.

Im gonna play more golf in 2013. If there are any REAl golfers here Id be interested in talking about equipment. I think the difference between a casual player (me) and a serious player is that they know some better details on equipment.

Im also going to continue going to the gym. I started this in 2012 and stuck to it, Ive basically gained 15 pounds in "good" weight over the last 8-9 months.
  • I've been trying to get under 200lbs for years now. Today I'm closer than ever (205) but I just love junk food too much. I could snack on a apple but that bag of chips is just so easy. Maybe I need to do a Cerb-esque prop bet to lay off the unhealthy snacks. Luckily I have the time to hit the gym (which I love to do) so that's not an issue.

Another goal for this year is to get my Commercial Pilots Licence. The training is going to be much more difficult than the Private, but I am up to the challenge.

Buzzard and MiltonSlim...they'll talk golf for days and days and days and...
  • To be able to play DP V...

Wes knows a boatload about equipment too. Also someone (I forget who) always pops up here in the spring to sell slightly used (but very nice) equipment.

    Hork42?
  • Bill- a friend of mine used Allan Car's Easy Way to Stop Smoking to quit.

I've heard of this book, and have heard some very good things about it. In fact I think I know someone who has one. Sadly, I think they still need it, but they might lend it to me for a while.

They read it and were successful temporarily, but went through some very serious emotional times due to several deaths in the family. Started again as they needed a crutch just to survive.
  • My goal this year is to find a gf that isn't a total nut job, I know that's ironic considering who I am but I'm serious.

I'd like to make it out to a forum gathering / game so I can at least stroke that off my bucket list. Comp and Milo would be awesome for me I think. We could understand each other a little more after a face to face meeting I think.

I also want to make more weddings and stags I'm invited to. I'm at the age where there's Alot of that shit happening, I guess I need to stop being so selfish.

I'd like to permanently quit chewing tobacco, I quit for the longest time but as soon as I got to Ontario I snap bought a tin. Funny how that works.

I'd like to take one trip this year with no gambling, or poker... Just want to enjoy sun and sip on ice cold beer.

What kind of info on equipment are you looking for? And yes, the leaps made by technology is definitely evident when put to use on the course.

You already have a good start following the Golftown deal of the day. (be careful...buying clubs is addictive)

Join TorontoGolfNuts.com and follow the Buy/Sell/Trade for some great deals...also a good place to unload the excess clubs you buy from Golftown's Deal of the day.

Become a Golftown leaderboard member and watch for their sales (members get advanced access at times) By far the best place to pick up high end equipment at the best prices is at their Demo sale usually November. It's year old equipment but I have never regretted not buying brand new clubs with their insane price point.

Unfortunately I soon to be a subject of the new show on AE... Golf Hoarder.

I can honestly say that, at the end of it last night, I didn't think I'd want to eat cookies again. Then about an hour ago, I tossed back a couple and thought "damn, these are pretty good". As long as you avoid the crazy binge at the end, the month off will do you wonders. Other tips:
    -Drink more water.
-Eat less salt. Even if you're getting fries from places, ask them for no salt. While you're still getting the oils and empty carbs, you'll have less water retention from having so much less salt in your diet.
-Add more protein, especially after workouts. Even an extra 5g per meal/snack is going to make a world of difference in your results from working out.
-Do your cardio in the morning before eating. Haven't done much research on it, but the wrestlers swear by it.
  • For me, it goes like this:

    #1 - Don't fuck up the wedding.

    #2 - See rule #1

In all seriousness, it really revolves around that. Wanting to be more financially responsible will help me with the wedding. Being less fat/eating better will make me look even more awesome for the wedding. Ditto for working out more/sitting around less/being angry less. The anger thing seems to have popped up in the last month, most likely as a trigger from eating less sugar and going through withdrawals.

I'd also like to take work a little less seriously. Unfortunately, I don't feel capable of doing that yet. I need my team to take things more seriously, so until they do, I have to keep being an arse to an extent. I treat them with a great deal of respect and tell them constantly how much I appreciate it when they work hard. However, if they screw around, I get on them, thus it's not as fun as it should be. Hope to get that going better this year.

Take better care of my kitties. I really don't play with them enough and more often than not, quality time is me watching tv and scratching their head/petting them every so often. I think they need a little more than that, call it a hunch.

Good trick for this at fast food joints is to tell them you`re diabetic and can`t have salt. If it`s lying or not, whatever. Usually they`re too young to understand what the hell that means and they`ll just make a new batch of fries.

    You get fresh fries too.
  • Not fooking up the wedding is easy . . . show up on time, show up sober, and do not fuck up your lines. You're welcome.

And remember, they say a man is never really complete until he takes a wife. So, after the wedding, you're finished.
  • I'm writing the entire ceremony and have to find a karaoke DJ for the reception to prevent that stupid glass tinking tradition from happening (if people want us to kiss, they have to get up and sing a song). It's not exactly a typical wedding, so I've got a little more to do than usual groom-stay-out-of-the-way stuff.

    I see a TLC Wedding.
  • I am waiting for the episode where he picks out his dress.

In all seriousness what you are describing is prep work. The actual day is when you are on your own in terms of screwing up.

Pretty sure Alpha will pick it out for "him". :D
  • - Don't take things for granted: make time for family, gf, friends, get out and explore/interact because it's lots of fun!

    - Sleep properly/optimally: I found out that most people's sleep cycles during the night are around 90 mins long and then another one starts. If you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle you might be groggy all day. So I'm going to try it out and either sleep 6hrs or 7.5 hours a day.

    - Eat better: ...and I don't just mean eat completely healthy, because I love certain foods too much atm for this to become a reality. But try and make better choices, and also go to some places that I've found out about online.
    - So far on the list is: The Black Hoof. Guu Izakaya, Thompson Diner (any more suggestions are welcome)
    - Don't eat after 9pm: I think if I do this alone I'd be in much better shape because I have a terrible habit of late night munching.
    - Drink two glasses of water immediately upon waking up.
    - Transition from drinking coca-cola (which I'm basically addicted to) to sprite, then eventually to not drinking pop anymore. I drink way too much pop and love it so this will be the toughest yet prob one of the most important things I must change in 2013.

    - Get in better shape/lose weight:
    - Pushups and cold showers: all my attempts at starting semi-normal workout routines using standard gym equipment/exercises usually end after a month or a bit more so I want to start off getting in shape by just simply doing pushups. If anyone has any suggestions on a decent starter program (haven't really worked out in months, can prob do like 25 pushups max atm) pls post. WUG thoughts on this: one hundred push ups - welcome
    - Have also read a lot on the benefits of having an ice/cold water bath/shower after any exercise as helping a lot with recovery, and just generally that you feel great/energized after one: Ice Water Bath After Exercise - Does an Ice Water Bath After Exercise Speed Recovery
    - Slowly lose some weight without any ridic/unrealistic goals: for now the aim is to lose 5 lbs, I'm currently 190 lbs. Once I reach this, I'll set another one, and so on and so on ldo

edit: cool quote I just found - " "The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not." - Mark Twain"

"The theory behind ice baths is related the fact that intense exercise actually causes microtrauma, or tiny tears in muscle fibers. This muscle damage not only stimulates muscle cell activity and helps repair the damage and strengthen the muscles ( muscle hypertrophy), but it is also linked with delayed onset muscle pain and soreness (DOMS) , which occurs between 24 and 72 hours after exercise.
The ice bath is thought to:

•Constrict blood vessels and flush waste products, like lactic acid, out of the affected tissues
•Decrease metabolic activity and slow down physiological processes
    •Reduce swelling and tissue breakdown
Then, with rewarming, the increased blood flow speeds circulation, and in turn, improves the healing process. Although there is no current protocol regarding the ideal time and temperature for cold immersion routines, most athletes or trainers who use them recommend a water temperature between 12 to 15 degrees Celsius and immersion times of 5 to 10 and sometimes up to 20 minutes.

So, while that’s the theory behind the cold water immersion for exercise recovery, conclusive research about the pros, cons and ideal time and temperatures is still a ways off. "

tldr it all, but cold water will only constrict superficial vasculature and I don't see how it would flush lactic acid out of tissues -- so much crap out there; the reasoning listed for the cooling/warming protocol is lol at best
  • Guu is the nut restaurant downtown tho. Go there min. once a month.

Don't need karaoke. Just tell them they need to sing a song with the word love in it. Put the instructions in the wedding invite and everyone will come prepared.
