the Ex casino poker room

Does anyone here play poker at the Ex? IIRC the casino opens a few weeks before the Ex itself does, so it's possible to avoid paying admission to the Ex for a while. I'm just not sure about the shark to fish ratio there.

Since the Ex grounds are about a 20-minute streetcar ride away from me, I might give it a shot some time in the first two weeks of August. If I go, I'll post a report here.

  • note its only limit poker, 5/10 minimum. See my previous trip report, "Limit is the Devil".
  • I believe the room opens on August 1.
  • I believe they offer 5/10 and 10/20 Fixed Limit only.

If you think the play is bad at BCC, you're in for a shock.

Yes, it's only 5/10 and 10/20 limit. And, in response to the other posters, yes, the Ex casino is open from August 1st to September 5th, noon to 6 am.

The play at Brantford is not so much bad as crooked. Are you saying the Ex casino features more fish or more lowlifes than Brantford?

    Yes
  • I intend to give it a try, at least until the Ex itself opens. If people want me to, I'll file a report here after my first trip.

One excellent thing about the Ex casino poker room for me is that the round-trip travel costs are only $5 (the price of two subway tokens). That beats hell out of any other place I might choose to play.
  • Cons:

The poker room at the EX has less class than the horse stables.

    The food there is disgusting.

    The washrooms are worse.

The rake is $7 for the 5/10 and $10 for the 10/20, it's higher than Brantford.

The players are lower life than ... the bacteria in the food.

    Pros:

    It's very profitable.

You can pay 5.00 and go on either the Casino Rama bus or Fallsview bus for the same price. There are multiple stops throughout the GTA as well that run hourly.

    As an option :)

Which bus carrier is this, or are those?

I know that Tai-Pan offers free trips to Rama to anyone with a player's card, but their schedule is extremely restrictive and signing in for the return trip is a hassle. Also, the Tai-Pan buses make stop at every lamppost to pick up more passengers before they leave Toronto. As for Fallsview, the Coach Canada buses cost about $18 and all you get in return are slots tokens, plus their schedule downright sucks.

Tai-Pan does Rama and Safeway does Niagara/Fallsview

I googled them and found them. Thanks for the information.
  • Has anybody received mail from The Ex yet regarding the VIP Pass? After the rake-free promotion is over at PartyPoker, I'll probably drive to the CNE Casino to pick up the free season pass and parking.

Weird, the answer came before the question. Hello, this is CPF Jeopardy!
  • I haven't posted in forever on this site. I still browse but want to become active on it again as I see many of the posters on here regularly. This year the CNE poker room will spread limit poker from 2/5 up to 25/50.

OMG 2/5 at the EX.......Talk about No Fold'em.

Source? Especially the 25/50 game. Did regulations/license change or something?

I took the tai pan bus to rama a few times around 2002. It was 5$ then. It was a great deal- roundtrip which afforded you sleeptime, a movie and a comp water. THe ONLY thing you have to be careful of is not to blow thru your roll in the first hour because its a long day stuck at the casino waiting for your bus to leave
  • Yeah sorry I didn't give more information, but Wes is correct Tai Pan does Rama and Safeway does Fallsview. Both are 5 bucks and for the most part the trips back to major locations in the GTA are hourly and you can leave anytime you want. (Both offer standby return trips either for earlier or later return times to each location)

I usually take Safeway up to Fallsview on the weekend. I use the call ahead # when I am out in mississauga (usually the last stop) and that gives about 1-1h 15mins to get to Fallsview and I am usually in the top 10 of the waiting list depending on time.

Now keep in mind when going to Fallsview and Rama especially on weekends tables are opened at certain times of the day so if you plan your trip accordingly you are usually on the table right away. I aim to get to fallsview at around lunch time and that means I may hit the 11am-12am table openings or worse case I hit the 2pm table openings.

I wonder how many of the 24 tables will have 2/5 limit.

Hopefully none. 2/5 is just a rake donation game.

    Thanks for input.
  • Embarrassed to say, but I've never played spread limit. It should be fun to try.

I'm not sure I'm going to be at the Ex casino poker room while the Ex is running simply because I would then have to pay admission fees to the Ex itself. I have no interest in the Ex, so it would be like paying an extra $25 in rake before I even sit down at a table.

There's a Tai-Pan bus out of Finch Subway Station where the Viva and GO buses pick up. The low cost of the round trip sure makes it tempting, even though it's a zoo at the check-in desk when it comes time to sign up for the bus back. The Fallsview bus is a nice low-cost option for going to Niagara (you just walk from Fallsview to Niagara or even blow $7 on taxi-rake). If it's express from Spadina then it shouldn't take more than about an hour and 15 minutes. Definitely worth thinking about once the Ex casino ceases to be cost-effective.

Does anyone want to plan a Rama or Fallsview bus trip in September? Yeah, I know, many people have cars and live outside the GTA, but askling just in case.
  • I think if you get the pass, you do not pay admission (others can confirm). Also, these are not spread limit games, but fixed limits. Slight difference . . .

Finally, 2/5 at the Ex = 9 handed to the turn, 8 to the river . . .
  • How much does the pass cost? And how do you get it?

I can handle donkés, as long as there are no cheaters.
  • Oh there's cheats . . . just look for somebody using a shiny Zippo as a card protector. Or young guys with shades on . . . inside. Yupyupyup.
  • I played there last must have been 2 years ago. Drove over around 1am and didn't pay anything at that hour.
