• All I can say is THANK FUCKING GOD that tool Phillipo Candio isn't playing HU for the title. I think I'd have to change my flight from Florida to Vegas this week just to slap him.

WSOP post on my facebook pg gave the count as 190 to 20. oh well.
Duhamel became the first Canadian according to the news to win Pokers most coveted title. I do believe this is going to give Poker a big shot in the arm here. Maybe start a whole new rush.
• According to a forum at the PokerTableRatings website, his PokerStars online screen name is/was "LeJohn54". It will obviously change now on PS.

It looks like several of the November Nine have good tournament winnings according to Sharkscope or OPR.
• Nice to see it go to a Canadian!

The commentators seriously need to find new jokes tho.....Like seriously..Alex Trebec jokes? Soooo 20 years ago...
• does anyone know when the broadcast will be with pocket cams? like the proper episodes?

It ran last night 10p-12:05a on TSN (11/09 - November "Nine" =). It's going to re-run on Saturday around 11:30 pm I think. Don't forget to change your PVR settings for the extra 5 minutes, mine got cut off so I have to record it again on Sat to see the final bits.

Might also be up on pokertube.com now/soonish

A WSOP broadcast without Norman Chad's facepalm-inducing cheesy jokes is not a WSOP broadcast I want to watch! ;>

Considering he is now an American Citizen.

Leave Norman Chad alone Shar, or this means war. This is your final warning.:D
• Question on the taxes on his winnings... An article on the Sun website had the following statement:

"Duhamel’s final haul is $8,944,310 but it will be much smaller once U.S., Canadian and Quebec tax authorities get their cut. He’s expected to take home about $4.6 million after taxes."

So he is keeping just over 51%. Is this because he is a pro and, in addition to automatic US tax with-holdings, he must pay the balance of the required income tax in Canada?

If an amateur had won, would they only lose the US with-holding tax and there would be no Canadian taxes?

Thanks...
• I've just been reading articles on the web. When hole card info is released, I wouldn't mind seeing hand histories in an online format. I'd be shocked if they televised the entire final table + heads-up; more likely just a few "key" hands where a lot of chips were exchanged.

OnlinePoker.net has a couple good articles... except for a geographical error in this one:
WSOP 2010 Main Event Results: Key Facts And Top 50 Positions

Since when was Canada "overseas" (relative to the USA)? I'll agree with "non-American" (although even that could be debated)... but "overseas"? That would be like a Frenchman saying the Tour de France winner was from overseas when won by a Spaniard.

Yep. They condensed around 15 hours of play into a 2h05 broadcast =]
• FML I fell asleep last night when they were down to 3.
I am going to fire a shot at Normand Chan...
RE-TARD-ED Sick of his stupid jokes and would like to crack him one in the melon.
He's just as irritating as listening to Jessie May giggle like a BI@TCH for 2 hrs.

I'm a CA in Toronto. That's pretty much correct if he has declared himself as a pro in Canada and files his Canadian taxes that way. But he'd also get to write off all his expenses including tourneys where he doesn't cash. A Canadian amateur would probably not have to pay Canadian income taxes and would be able to get the US taxes back. But the amateur can't write off any of his expenses.

Did you notice he had the RMS logo on his hoodie? RMS is the logo for a Canadian company called Refund Management Services and they file to get back US taxes withheld on casino winnings by US non-residents claiming the treaty between Canada and the US.
• Pretty smart boy, then, eh?
• A professional getting only half of the $8,944,310 seems correct, assuming the combined federal and Quebec income tax rate is around 50%. The 30% US withholding tax of $2.7 million :rage: can be deducted from the Canadian taxes payable.

I'm surprised that unknown Duhamel had considered himself a professional poker player for the past couple of years now. I was shocked when I saw him wearing an RMS patch at the final table and started laughing. Hopefully, RMS has been giving him good advice since July when he was given $811,823 (minus 30%) for making the Final 9.

Assuming that an amateur is not deemed to have turned professional after getting the $811,823 back in July, then there are no Canadian taxes to be paid on the $6.2 million received from the Rio. The only legal way I know to get any refund of the $2.7 million US tax is with provable gambling losses.

While it is horribly -EV for Canadian non-professionals to travel to the US just to buy into a poker tournament, if an amateur on the forum has a huge win in a US tournament, my advice would be to try to contact the Waterloo poker millionaires on which tax professional they used. ONE possibility is that you get screwed by the WSOP for giving you ~$800K early in July as you may be deemed to be a professional after that and will have to pay taxes on sponsorship, November final table and all future gambling-related profits.

If you are advised that you will still be an amateur after just one big lucky win, then I would buy into as many $10K and the highest buy-in tournaments in US casinos until the end of that year. It is like playing freerolls for millions more as you can claim your tournament/gambling losses to offset the US 30% tax.
Is this because he is a pro and, in addition to automatic US tax with-holdings, he must pay the balance of the required income tax in Canada?
• It's really not fair, in the grand scheme of things. If he's taxed fully by Que and Can, he shouldn't have to pay US taxes at all.....if he has to pay US taxes because he earned the money there, he shouldn't have to pay any taxes here. As usual it's the little guy (even though he's rich now) that gets screwed. No matter what, he should be allowed to keep 70% of his earnings. Any less is just wrong.
• Regardless of how much he ends up paying in taxes, feel free to sign me up for that kind of "screwing" anytime . . .
• I know. Sounds weird to say 'I'm getting screwed, I'm only getting 4 million bux.'. If only my problems were like that. lol

There's no double taxation if it is done properly. Canada give you credit for any US taxes you end up paying. In this case, the US gets first crack at it if he's considered a pro there. In Canada, anything you make above $130,000 is taxed (in Ontario) at almost 47% - you are left with 53%. Quebec's tax rates are slightly higher. That's the price of making money in Canada. When Peter Eastgate won in 2008, he forked over 73% to Denmark where he's from.
• Anyone got change for a million.?

I always wondered that myself. If I were to final table the wsop me, I don't think I could quit my job in July, it would have to be in Nov after the final table or else I would be on the hook for income taxes on the difference.
• As much as I love my country and being Canadian , I am just sick of paying for these retards Mistakes.
If I were writing this in most other countries I would not be so fortunate to go unscathed as I am here.
When is the Madness going to stop? Most logical answer to this question. Probably when I stop breathing permanently.
Taxed to death by Daltons Gang. Taxed to Death by the almighty Harper minority. Would you really want Ignatief running our country?
A guy grinds it out over 8 or 9 days in a poker tournament. Wins almost 9 million and has to give half to the leaches in Washington, Ottawa and Quebec. I want to know where all of our tax dollers right down to the last penny are going.
Why keep giving $$$$ away when we are a gazillion dollars in debt.
Stupid Stupid Stupid morons that we vote in to take care of us and do the right thing always do the wrong thing and say "Oh Well"
Maybe it's time we stop putting up with it and say FUCK IT. You get not a penny more fro me.
