Scotch

I used to think Scotch smelled and tasted awful..

Then someone put a nice single malt in my hand and...

I was converted.

It was smooth ... It was awesome.

It's really hard to describe why someone would like scotch to a person that doesn't drink the stuff...

  • Which did you try?

I'm a pretty big single malt drinker. I currently have 10 bottles that each cost me over $100... really need to do less buying and more drinking!
  • There really is nothing better than a nice single malt.
  • I fancy myself a preety intense whisky drinker (love my rye and gingers)... however I dont care for any whicky-scotch's out there.

can someone enlighten me on the difference between whisky and scotch?
  • Scotch is Whisky.

So you're a ginger ale drinker who likes to get drunk...

Scotch is whisky made in Scotland. That's the northern part of the UK...
  • epic_donk wrote: »

'Cause they age it in oak barrels until it tastes good.
  • Someone please correct me, but the "single malt" refers to the fact that all the grain used is from one location/harvest, right?

    Never mind, wiki'd it instead . . .

Not a Sctch drinker, but I found a "single malt" Vodka that is quite good, and Canadian, too.

Bad cheap scotch, tastes bad and is cheap.

Good scotch tastes good , and is usually expensive.

Some blends like Chivas are expensive and don't come close to a good single malt.
  • The reason I spell my name the way I do is because of Johnnie Walker Black Label. When I'm not drinkin' beer, it's Johnnie Black. JW Red is kinda gross, but it's cheap.

JW Blue Label is soooo smooth going down.

    My first:

    Highland Park 18
    Awesome simply awesome.

I went canoe camping with a bunch of friends of a friend.
I remarked... too bad we can't bring beer,

Everyone else I noticed had a flask of scotch...
    I brought bourbon.
Since on 2 week canoe trip you can't bring a lot it makes sense to bring something good.

    Others brought.

Lagavulin 16 // This used to be really cheap now it's expensive.
Laphroaig 10 // these have gone up in price a lot
    Cardu 12
Glenfiddich 18 // This one is really nice.
    Auchentoshan 10

    From Wikipedia:

Single Malt Scotch is a type of single malt whiskey, distilled by a single distillery in a pot still, using malted barley as the only grain ingredient, in Scotland. As with any Scotch whiskey, a Single Malt Scotch must be distilled in Scotland and matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years (most single malts are matured for longer).

    * "Single" indicates that all the malts in the bottle come from a single distillery. Multi-distillery malts are usually called "blended malt", "vatted malt" or "pure malt".
    * "Malt" indicates that the whisky is distilled from a single "malted" grain. Not all grains can be malted (rye is another grain which can be malted) but in the case of single malt Scotch, barley is always the grain used.

A blended whiskey (or whiskey) is the product of blending different types of whiskeys. It is generally the product of mixing one or more single malt whiskeys (made from 100 percent malted grain such as barley or rye) together with other grain whiskeys or neutral grain spirits. Scotland, Ireland, and Canada are the most common countries of origin for blends. A mix of single malts only, without grain whiskey, is called a vatted malt.
  • Yup, that's the one. Explains a lot about the taste (of the Vodka, I mean). My best friend loves the Lagavulin, although I recently got him into Don Julio Reserva Tequila. Don Julio runs $50.00 for a 12 oz. bottle but it is nice. I hate Tequila, but I would sip this with no complaint.
I have never acquired the taste for Scotch, but I can appreciate it, much like I enjoy good wines.
    Vodka for me, thanks . . .
  • not a big Liquor drinker
Had a bottle of Antiquary given to me, many years ago, but I do remember that we broke it out the night my neighbours and I were clearing our streets ourselves (late 70's, Milton) lived in a townhouses development and because the trucks couldn't get to us, we started clearing the streets ourselves, get by a house, have a drink, I brought this Scotch out and I do remember how smooth it was.

for my 60th got a bottle of 15 year old and 18 year old Glenfiddich

    haven't tried these yet

    Milton Slim
  • Here's where I spend all my accumulated coolness points..left to my own devices (sans Mark and Mario) I really think drinking is the lamest thing ever.

And while I've accepted the use of it as a social lubricant, this whole "appreciate the taste and drink it just for itself and to kill liver cells on a tuesday night with dinner" seems stupid to me.

Knew there was a good reason we get along Milo.

Vodka FTW. What was the single malt vodka you mentioned?

    if (debatable)

    excessive drinking I would agree with you;
the liver will regenerate unless unlike brain cells from smoking.

( I smoked for almost 15 years; almost 1 year clear)

    endif;

It's called "Still Waters" and is produced in Concord, ON of all places. Less than $40.00 for a 750 ml bottle, so a premium taste for less than premium price, imo.

    My favourites are:

Vincent, from Holland. No longer available through the LCBO (Boooo . . .)
Chopin, from Poland. Just under $50.00 for a 710 ml bottle.
Belvedere, from Holland (?). Again, just under $50.00.

If you want a good "mixing" Vodka, you can go with Ketel One, although rumour has it they will be introducing an Ultra premium bottle this year, so who knows. For the record, Grey Goose sucks Donkey balls, no matter what the marketing dept. tells you.

Kristy, don't forget the brain cells . . . kills those, too. :D

See this is the weird part..I am a smoker, and for how many times I've tried and failed to quit...giving up something bad to which I'm not addicted seems like a no-brainer.

On your logic you'd be cool with filming a bloody porn with me and a chlamydia laden hooker..because some antiseptic, a band-aid and a shot of penicillin makes it right?

This thread's popularity explains so much about this forum then. :D

My name is Milo, and I am addicted to eating meat, fish, and poultry. Also, various forms of wild game . . . and cookies, too

So, does this get me off the hook with you Vegans?
  • How many times have you tried to quit Kristy? I consider it every now and again, but unless I'm totally committed I don't take it any further. Don't do it unless you're serious. Obviously a cop out to doing anything about it from a psych perspective.

Interestingly, I saw an article the other day that said chastising smokers about quitting is -EV and actually reduces smokers interest in attempting to quit. Humans are weird. It's a wonder we've lasted as long as we have.

I put in a solid effort approximately once a year, and I've smoked for 15 years. Actually I probably didn't try hard to quit until 4 or 5 yrs in, so 10 or 11 times.

I did quit once during pregnancy, but my normally very low blood-pressure went through the roof and all sorts of stress related things started happening..
My Dr. actually TOLD me to start smoking again or face emergency c-section for the strain quitting was putting on my body. True Story.

I'm going to see my Dr. next week to try "Champix" or "Chantix"..my parents both used it last year and have quit smoking for over 6 months. (The smoked for 45 and 35 years each, I'm so proud of them!)
  • All kidding aside, Kristy, quit. My wife went cold turkey years ago, and never looked back.

True story, one of the things I am most proud of my Father for, is the manner in which he quit smoking. This was 1973, when they were really starting to push the anti-smoking campaigns hard. My House League team was playing for the Championship and my Dad promised me I could have whatever I wanted if we won. Well, we did and, when he brought it up, I told him I wanted him to quit smoking. He put out the cigarette he was smoking at the time, threw the partial pack in the garbage when we got home, and has never had another smoke in his life.

If my Father can quit like that, after 30 years of smoking, you can too. Good luck with it.

not trying to start an issue; just stating the point that a few drinks every so often isn't going to do anything

if you made like a 1000 sequals once a day with same hooker that would be the same logic

with the smoking I tried everything like anyone who smokes and the only thing that made by quit for good was it was the right time for me to quit (edit) and went cold turkey

I found that the patch, gum, lozenge, pills, whatever just makes you focus on it more and how much shittier that is than just having a smoke so I always went back to the smoke

there's nothing anyone can tell you or anything you can take for it

    back on tracks..

    hate scotch
love rye sans ginger or anything else but ice

I hate this sort of statement, it is like all non-smokers think they have an ****official I'm allowed to be retarded because you smoke**** card

I am comparing hookerfest to YOUR example of drinking and it IS an apt comparison...as they are both one-offs.
  • When I sold computers back in the 80's (yes we had them then!) I knew an old accountant. Did payroll in WWII or something! Smoked for over 70 years. Started at 12! Doc told him he'd be dead in a year if he didn't quit. Used his watch to time when he could/couldn't have one. 3 days later, he woke up, lit a smoke, put it out and never had another! Story still amazes me. Art lived for another 3 years, but got an extra two with his grandkids.

Belvedere is from Poland. Picked up a bottle of this from duty free last time coming back from the US. 1L bottle for $31 or $33.

    i know i know lol
I'm relating that statement to the bloody, STD laced vids too.

IE: if you have 1 drink every Tuesday (IE Star Whores-Episode I-Chlamido-Hookers films followed by some peniclin) you're going to be okay

if you have 10 drinks every day (IE Star Whores-Episode 1000) you're pretty much fucked both ways.

I'm not being the all mighty former smoker that is better than you now and acting like it to be an asshole. I was just sharing my experience with it
  • Drinking isn't like smoking.

Non-drinkers have shorter lifetimes on average than drinkers. When you consider how much alcoholics are at risk this means, moderate drinking is good for you.

If you're going to drink, then it makes sense to drink something you like.

I like red wine and scotch. I despise American beer.
  • Thanks, Wes. Been a while since I've had Belvedere. Generally just buy the Chopin, now that Vincent is off the shelves. I am jealously guarding my last "Vinnie".

Bill, "computer" used to be a job title. They used "computers" to determine that Everest was the tallest point on the planet, way back when . . . for the record, satellite technology showed the original computations were only off by a matter of a few feet.
