Just got back from Orangeville, game finished about 8:30. Made it to 3rd this time for a little over $400. Just couldn't win a flip at final or I would have been up with the chip leader.. I think 1st paid 1100 and change..Met Sirus who also made final for 7th or 8th I think... And is moving to Milton in April... Woohoo, another Milton Rock potential... We just keep getting better and better......

It was my first time out to the tournament and I finished in 7th. I was happy to meet Compuease and had a really great time playing in the tournament. I definitely will be back to play in these tournaments and will likely see a lot more of Compuease! Nice meeting you by the way.

From all accounts these sound like nicely run tourney's. I'll check out the next OPL tourney in march. Anyone know if the charity poker tournaments listed on their site are run by the same group, i realise there is the "rake" in the form of rebuys; but are the structure and dealers of the same quality?
The charity ones are run by the same people but are not the same structure, I'm not sure the rake can be beat long term though.... Your mileage may vary... Best idea may be to find the charity which you don't mind supporting.

I have been to two of their charity games. In my opinion, the charity game is -ev. You should only play it if you just want to play poker or you want to support the charity. They have two tables with dedicated dealers and the rest is pass the cards. Most people in the room do not know how to play poker, so it is painfully slow. In the first game I sat at a table with a dedicated dealer; in the second game I offered to deal at the table, and believe that I gave my table a huge advantage since we probably saw a minimum of twice the number of hands per blind level as other tables. The final table is dealt by a dedicated dealer.

You should expect to lose at least 50% of your buy-in to the charity, since none of the rebuys and add-ons are included in the prize pool and the add-on is the the same as the initial buy-in. They did provide food at the break in both cases - sandwiches, veggie tray, fruit tray, sweets tray ...

I couldn't say for sure, but the blind structure felt more aggressive than their league game. There was no cash game going when I busted out of the first tournament, shortly after the break. I did manage to just make the money in the second game, and basically got my buy-in back. I did that after busting out on the last hand of the rebuy period and getting the add-on. That was my only rebuy so I had invested a total of $100. It was total bingo before the end of the rebuy period. There was a cash game going when I busted out of the second tournament. It lasted for about another hour until the tournament ended. I managed to make an extra $50 there.

I will probably go to another charity event when they are close to home and I am looking for something to do that night/afternoon. My strategy will be to play extremely passively during the rebuy period; limp in with good cards, and only bet hard with the nut hand. Pot odds mean nothing to these players. There are people who have never played poker before.
  • could anyone PM me the specs of the tourneys that go on? Like location and time so I can play? :}

You can't do pm's as you need 25+ posts first... And all of the info is further up the thread if you look...... :)
  • Driving up this Sunday from Brampton.

If anyone needs a lift LMK.

I won't be there this week as I am in AC Sun-Thu... gl..
  • I am 95% sure I will be heading to Orangeville on Sunday for this tournament. If there are other people from K-W going, let me know. I am happy to drive people, but it would be better if we could get two vehicles. That way if some people want to stay and others want to leave early we have some flexibility.
  • 2nd to last tourney of the season this Sunday. Last game I started out first hand with J-J then A-A on the second hand but it went all downhill from there. Been a long time since I have cashed in a tourney. I think I`ll remedy that tomorrow! :-)
  • I plan to be there too. I didn't get J-J at the last tourney, but I did get the A-A about halfway through the field. That was my only good pair all day and it got cracked by A-J that went runner-runner straight after we put it all in on the flop. I hope to cash or cash make money in the cash game.
  • my last hand was ridiculous. I was being blinded away, finally was dealt A-J, was planning an all-in. Buddy raises before me, I re-raise all-in, then a 3rd guy re-raises the initial raiser all in too! Three hands get turned up..A-J, A-Q, A-K! The 3rd guy in caught his Q to knock us both out. Good luck Waltsfriend!
  • I will be coming out again tomorrow. I love the structure.

    Good luck tomorrow guys.

same to you Sirus! I hope you get in the money again
  • Well that was fun! 3rd guy busted in a 90+ field? 2 hours of driving for a 17 minute game? Yeah, I'm feeling real good about my game! lol You pays your money and you takes your chances I guess.

A-J, K-K, A-10 all losers for me today. Wow.
  • Finished 19th today.... Felt lousy, played worse... 101 players... Did luck out once getting all in preflop with KK against AA and QQ. Made a flush on river to become a big stack with around 50 players left.... pissed it away.. Not like me, blame the bad cold.. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Great turnouts lately.. Season ending tournament Apr 19th, $100. buy in
  • I was unbelievably card dead. I had pocket jacks on the second hand and then about two hours later got pocket nines. The only other pocket pair I got was pocket threes. The next best hands I saw was A-J once and K-Q suited once that got me the blinds. I lasted for about three hours and finally busted out on an ill timed semi-bluff. I hope that things go better at the last one.
  • Finally made it out to one of these events; just came for the cash game which was not bad although there were a lot of short stacks at my table; I guess the $100 max rule tends to result in not a lot of chips at the table. Can't recall the last time I self dealt at a 1/2 game, if ever. Takes a while to get use to not tipping the dealer when you win a pot. Managed to squeek out a $200 profit in about 4 hours. Now if the worse cash game player on pokerforum.ca can make money at this game, imagine how the rest of you could do.

I'm surprised blondefish isn't a regular at this tournament with nominal rake and great structure and huge field (+100 players).
  • Pick me up & drop me off for the 3-hour round-trip drive! ;) If I lived closer, I would go everytime as it was probably the best way to practice for the WSOP $500-$1,500 events.

Wimp.... :) but you will drive 6 hours round trip to Windsor to play a raked tournament? I think the problem is the field in Orangeville is generally considered to be pretty good, not a lot of donkeys, so not very good practice for the donkey filled casino tournaments.... :)
  • There was no tournament there to play on Tuesday, but my roommate and I wanted to finally see the new Caesars Windsor since it was a reasonable detour on the way to Point Edward Casino. Hopefully I'll have time to post a detailed trip report.

P.S. What time are you picking me up? ;)

Drive to Milton and you got a ride... Apr 19th, You buy the Tim's.....
  • when it got to 2 tables, i was severely short stacked, but i managed to double up a couple of times , ran a bluff, and got on a rush to win a couple more pots..made the final table and folded my way to 4th lol...

for most of us, this is the usual round trip to Niagara; I hear you, time is money. It took me just under one hour from Richmond Hill. I don't think I would return for the cash game again, probably just the tournament. Too many short stacks buying in for $50.

which is pretty understandable when you think that the players just shelled out $55-$65 for the tourney.

Just out of curiosity, why is that a deterrent for you? I've never stuck around for the cash game, is there usually only one table? How many players?
  • i am a bit confused about chip allocation for the season finale..it seems to be based on money won..if that is correct, then i think i should get more chips.than what was allocated on the Orangeville meetup web site..because i cashed twice..if money won is not the criteria, then what is?..can anyone help..Curtis?..i will go with 800 plus but i wont go with the 300 and change..thanks in advance..Martin
  • Marban, not sure if Curtis even looks at this forum. You may want to contact him via email or on his site.

FYI to the rest of you, the Orangeville poker league season finale is next Sunday the 19th.. I expect over 100 players there... For those that have never tried it you may want to give it some serious consideration when it starts up again in the fall.
  • Curtis corrected it on his site..so im in..see you next Sunday Compuease..whoever you are ....lol....
