US Presidential Election

I'd like to get everyone's thoughts on today's US election...whether you're Canadian, American or whatever.

I personally think McCain would be a disaster for the current situation. Obama is the clear choice to improve things more quickly.

Thoughts?

  • Whoops. Mods, please move to off-topic. Sorry.
  • Relax, you're new. I think that Obama will win. Fortunately his more left-leaning tendencies will have to be abated somewhat by the current economic situation you folks are in. Better hope he decides NOT to buy Chrysler and GM's pension obligations, though . . .
  • Obama FTW!

    /g2
  • I vote for Joe The Plumber!
  • I personally think McCain OR Obama would be a disaster for the current situation. NEITHER is the clear choice to improve things more quickly.

Nevertheless, Obama will almost certainly win.
  • I would classify myself as a democrat (in american terms) but am concerned by the lack of checks and balances the US government is setting itself up for (If memory serves, congress and the Senate are both Democratic controlled at this present time). All politicians regardless of party politics can make larger scale sweeping changes if there is no solid opposition.

    THat's what worries me.

If you think that McCain would be a disaster, then apparently you have been smoking way too much Loco Weed.

Obama will be a train wreck.
  • I have way too much wagered on Obama (most right after economic thing happened before lines shifted) then I care to admit. I probably should have arbed out a lot more then I did, but since I want Obama to win I decided to have a stake in it so to speak.

Clearly a Democratic wave would be potentially better for online gaming, and also it has to be better for relations with Canada compared to the Bush years.

Intrade? Or just other side prop bets?
  • Partybets and Intertops mainly. They even had prop bets on various states that were silly (Obama bet $1 to win .50 in Nevada last week for instance).

Most general election bets were $1 to win 75ish cents right after the economy tanked but before the lines changed as before then the Palin effect was working for McCain. Last I checked today it was win 4 cents per $ for Obama :)
  • Obama is going to win OH, and therefore is going to be the next President of the United States. Since 1964, Ohio has been a 100% indicator on who will take the White House.
  • Obama has made History folks! Bravo!
  • Well now you can really go grab the popcorn and sit back and enjoy the ride.

They just elected a guy to the presidency that they really know absolutely nothing about and has no prior history.

Is he left? Is he center? Is he right? No one knows.

Oh they know about him and what he believes, they choose not to dwell on it.

Welcome to the beginning of the end of the world. A true blue socialist on the brink of being a communist is now leader of the free world. A man who simple got a pass from left wing journalist and news media in general. Not only did he have NBC and MSNBC on his side, CNN, CBS, and ABC put out the red carpet for this guy who has absolutely NO EXPERIENCE. Even his vice president said this is not a job with on the job training. Then he joined the ticket because he would never get elected on his own, only 9% of the people thought he (Biden ) would make a good president.

No this is a sad day for Canadians, Americans and the world in general.

Only in America can you go from a law office to senator for 2 years solely so he could begin campaign for president of the United States. When is the big dinner with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as you discuss ways to wipe Israel of the face of the earth.

  • Yep, I hope everyone said a fond farewell to the sun since it won't be coming up again anytime soon. LOL.

Also since he's one of those dirty Dems, I'm sure he's already checking out the interns to see whom he wants to bed first. Godless sodomites!

Wow, just a hint of negativity there Brent? The americans can't do any worse then when they elected and idiot who has run every company he had a hand in into the ground. The last two administrations were catastrophes of corruption and incompetence. At least Obama won't be starting illegal and wasteful wars based on his families grudges and vendettas.
I am so sick of people decrying the interference of the left leaning liberal media. Most of the news outlet report positive and some negative reports on both parties. Only the republicans have one entire network completely in their pocket, Fox news (an oxymoron if ever there was one). Watch it for even an hour and you can find countless examples of propaganda, slander and outright lies. How they have so much viewership, much less stay on the air is beyond me.
Anyways, Obama may be great and he may fall well short of that but the most important thing is that it's time to have someone with a vastly different agenda in there to help right the sinking ship that is the U.S. I used to respect McCain for his integrity and the fact that he was the most centrist of all the republican leadership hopefuls. But then he sold his soul by picking that completely corrupt, power abusing moron for his running mate in hopes to get the evangelical vote and the disgruntled Clinton female vote (he thought). Anyone who gets in bed with evangelicals is a horrible choice to lead, Period!

C'mon.. even Obama himself would admit that he got a free pass from the media for the last two years. To say that he was scrutinized by the media to the depths that your average presidential candidate should be subjected to is farcical.

Why do I know way more about Sarah Palin than I do Obama? Why does Obama get a freepass for hanging around with known terrorists? How about his crazy reverend? But, I can tell you Palin's social insurance number and if she shaves her vag..

Also, MSNBC was basically the Obama network. I watched the entire night of coverage on FoxNews and really did think it was fair and balanced with a conservative slant. Once Obama was elected, even Brit himself was congratulating Obama on his campaign and hope about where he'll direct the country.
  • He got a free pass?? Even you alluded to his supposed free pass. The false claims that he consorted with terrorists: He was part of community organization that also had someone who was once a radical activist in the 70s. They had no connection outside and despite immense digging by Fox news there was nothing more sinister found.
He was labeled a closeted muslim (also a false fabrication). And when all that was failing, they resorted to the McCarthyism of calling him socialist who would lead the country into a communist type future. Just to name a few of the free passes he received
The same was said of Gore and Kerry when they ran against the Republican juggernaut, when the opposite was true. An independent study found that across all American news publications and broadcasts that the democrat candidate had 4 times more negatively slanted stories than the republican.
The fact that the McCain campaign only slinged slightly less mud does not constitute a free pass.
  • Unbelievable! especially the last sentence. There is so much to say.

Do you even watch the news? Do you read the reports? Fox news was the only news cast that came out balanced on the 2 candidates. MSNBC and NBC were whopping 82% negative stories on McCain while only 13% negative for Obama. I think you need to check your facts. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann were pulled from the nightly desk because of their lack of objectivity to quote Tom Brokaw.

As far as Sarah Palin goes. The choice for her as VP is simple. The republicans had given up on this election. Her job wasn't to get the Clinton voters it was to get the base of the Republican part energized, plan and simple. John McCain is not that far off from Obama in his views, the reason he works so well with them is because he is pretty much one of them. Hence the Republican Party was having a hard time getting in his corner. Before she was on the ticket the rallies had maybe 1000 people. With her on the ticket, the rallies were packed 20K. Right up until the very end! She will be back so don't count her out.

General Electric bought this election. Obama out spent McCain 4:1. Most of that money coming through GE.

Sarah Palin is not corrupt! Give your head a shake! Don’t believe everything you see on tv. Do your own research.

It has been almost 20 years since the last assassination attempt, that streak will come to an end. And when the next big attacks come … it might just be the beginning of the end.

    Armageddon will be here!!!!
  • Also, there is a good reason we know so much about Palin. Because there is much more stuff that needs to be known about her. And in spite of the vast amounts of evidence that she is incredibly corrupt it wasn't receiving near the attention that it should have.
There is the not widely reported trooper gate scandal. She was found guilty of abusing her power by firing a government employee because he wouldn't fire a state trooper who was in the process of divorcing her sister.
She also appointed no less than 13 former high school classmates when she became governor. Several now hold very important jobs. What was their previous experience? Jobs such as .... real estate agent.
Way to go left leaning media. Way to crucify her for that.

    Right on dude!!

Fox news kept trying to smear Obama and his wife as somehow both being 'angry socialists'.
    I just don't buy it. ???
  • Sorry Brent. You are the one that needs to do more research. She is corrupt. Not an opinion but a fact the American courts have found to be completely true. See my previous post.

Plus, all this Armageddon, end of days talk is pretty over the top don't you think?
  • The appointment of Palin had the opposite effect that they were hoping for. There was an initial surge of popularity but once the public got to know even a little bit about her it ended up sinking McCain.
McCain has never been popular with the evangelical republican base so he tried to bring on someone who would appeal to them. The campaign managers also wanted to try and get a lot of the disgruntled Hillary voter so they wanted a female. Enter Palin.
Not a bad tactic since there was many female voters who were incredibly upset and bitter that she was ousted by Obama. Many openly said that if she lost to him they absolutely would not vote for Obama for President. Fortunately Palin turned them off even more and they did the right thing in the end.
  • Why is anyone from here complaining Obama is a socialist - OUR COUNTRY IS SOCIALIST!!!??!
And so was McCain, he just wanted the wealth distributed slightly differently.

It seems Americans have made the better choice if there is such a thing in an election like that.
  • “that we must take out Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants if we have them in our sights. John McCain likes to say that he'll follow bin Laden to the Gates of Hell - but he won't even go to the cave where he lives.”

A quote from obama convention speech and do you want to no what Christ Matthews and said “I can’t find any thing wrong with anything he has said.

The statement alone demands an answer to what he means by it. Is he going into Pakistan regardless of what they say to get bin Laden?

This is a two term senator whose only budget he has managed is his campaign. He has never made a decision in that affects the people he governs directly.

Those are 2 pretty ignorant statements.......

I have as much to back up these statements:

You're a fascist that would make Hitler look like a Care Bear.

You have little to no insight into the Middle East.

Your favourite CD is by Vanilla Ice.
  • Really ? ? ?

Well how about you explaining it to me seeing as I am so ignorant on the subject! I will be at Bristol street tonight!

Are you call me a racist? With the Vanilla Ice comment

Come on tell me how you really feel! Educate me! Please.

Wouldn't you say that he managed his campaign budget pretty well? By your own comments he had quite the amount of money to work with. Somewhere north of $400 million (if not quite a bit more).

A probe finding that Palin did not violate Ethics rules simply means the "ethics rules" are weak. Nothing more. Even a local councillor would know its not "ethically alright" to call the chief of police and ask to have a person fired who is married to your sister! Talk about conflict of interest. Everyone here knows the difference between legal and right. Legally OJ was not guilty.....that doesn't make him innocent.(at least the first time!)

None of that matters anyway. I hope Palin runs in 4 years....cause if she's the best the GOP can come up with will have another 4 years of democrats. Which is much better than the War mongering, anti science, anti freedom, (dare I say anti poker) administration.

Oh and just a question......Which country currently arrests people with out cause, tortures them and confines them indefinitely without charge and without trial? Is it Iran or USA?
  • Really ? ? ?
