I was steaming over something last night and kidded with friends that I would go postal and wreak havoc at Fallsview Casino. I carpooled with a friend, then saw more friends there that want to play in future rake-free satellites.

To make an interesting story short, I ended up winning the $1,240 Step Q satellite and main event seat! I believe I am only the third person to have won a seat. Based on advice from my bankroll coach (ReefAquarium!), I would be willing to consider selling the voucher for close to the $10,300 face value instead of automatically playing it. I know that some poker clubs want to buy a voucher ASAP to show as the first prize for their huge buy-in raked satellites. Fallsview told me that they have a 3% surcharge for using a credit card, so it will cost over $10,600, plus gas, cash advance, interest and other bank fees.

    Congrats on the win!!

How would you rate the play level?? Any regulars in the game?

    I'm surprised you would play in the $460 satellite with these stats :Patience Factor = 2.7, Skill Level = 1;

Any suggestions on how to approach these satellites? Is it pure aggression early on to build your stack so you can take more risk later when the blinds become more of a factor? With top three getting paid, how does this impact your strategy? I may give one of these a try on Thursday/Friday this week.

It makes absolutely no sense for you to decline participating in future rake-free satellites with less driving then say that you want to waste $460 on a Skill Level 1 crapshoot with a higher rake than previous years and as little playing time as the $170 crapshoot. Only if you have signed up for as many rake-free WPT satellites and leagues as you can AND if both your ego and bankroll are big enough to think that you are +EV against high-raked crapshoots would it make sense to me to drive and gamboool at a Fallsview satellite.

so... you played in a 170 crapshoot... what conclusion should i draw?

no drive time as I will be at Niagara anyways; if its good enough for the goose, why not the gander? i.e. if you are participating in the crapshoots, doesn't that add some creditability to the structure? at this point there don't seem to be any rake-free satellites planned for the future so this may be our only option. Buying into the $1,240 is not practical for most players so this is likely our best shot as it stands.

I think he is referring to the $460 and this is my point exactly; I was considering playing in a $460 based on Blondefish's feedback on the structure and his thoughts on a strategy (i.e. are they beatable); seeing that he is playing them after criticizing the structure, I was confused as to his rationale for taking a shot at these -ev satellites.

Weak players increases the profitability despite the fast structure and slightly higher rake. Just because they are bad structures doesn't necessarily make them unplayable - if a player has an edge and there are no other viable options, then it may become necessary to play in a crap-shoot tournament
  • its kind of ironic that two of the top three finishers in last years WPT Niagara got in through the step 1 and step 2 satellites with the ultimate winner getting in through the $80 satellite.

What they fail to mention is how many of those satellites they played.

Exactly. It would be silly for ten individual forumers to drive to the casino and pay $290-$860 in casino fees, instead of first doing whatever it takes to have as many rake-free satellites as they can so that 100% of the money stays with the players. Unfortunately despite all my efforts, there may not be another rake-free satellite in the foreseeable future, so I will be carpooling as much as I can to Fallsview to play the cash games and satellites. If I can't beat the casino (with rake-free satellites), then I have no choice but to join its raked turbos.

Aside from my car or 13CARDS' basement, ;) what is the cheapest motel near Fallsview to get some sleep? I am thinking of going there on Friday night so I can battle pokerJAH ;) and we can donate to the $420 satellite rake, then I may stay overnight so I can register at noon for the $1,240 and other satellites.
  • since city tv replayed the event last sunday, was that you dealing 13cards????

    if not WHY not!!!!!!!:)

will you be dealing in the big tourny this year?
  • 13CARDS wrote: »
This is very close to true...but inaccurate in at least two ways!!

Two of the top three finishers in the 2007 NAPC got in through the Step 1 and Step 2 satellites with the Ultimate Warrior....um...err...Winner getting in though the $90 satellite.

I was referring to the WPT Niagara (as I call it) that was shown last Sunday afternnoon; on the show they mentioned the 1st and 3rd place finishers got in through the cheaper satellites.

Why are poker players so anal about stats... nature of the beast. $80, $90, whatever, you get my drift.

tourist season = crazy prices; this is the reason we are going on Thursday night vs Friday night; the best deal on Thursday night is actually at the Seneca Casino Hotel at $105/night which then tops out at $315 on Friday and Saturday night. We prefer to stay on the US side for duty reasons. Probably you could find a cheaper motel on the Cdn side. try lodging.com.

I guess we will not butt heads on Friday night.

btw, anyone who likes PUDDLE OF MUDD, they are putting on a free outdoor concert on Friday night at Seneca Casino.

I'm guessing you can give Hotwire or Priceline a shot.

  • Note that there are no more $170 WPT satellites being run. The last $170 satellite was run on late Tuesday night.

The $1,240 satellites started being run DAILY on Wednesday. The poker room was much busier than previous Wednesdays, with three 2/5 NLHE tables and an Omaha table.

The last chance to play a $70 satellite will be this Sunday, October 5 at Casino Niagara. The last $460 satellite will be on Thursday, October 9. $1,240 satellites will continue to be run until the morning of Sunday, October 12.
    Step Q:
    - $1,240 ($1,154 + $86), 7% fees. $860 in fees will be taken away from the players for every Step Q satellite.
    - 1st place gets NAPC entry. 2nd place gets $1,240 replay.
    - 3000 chips, 30-minute levels.
    - Saturday (daily starting on October 1).
    - Patience Factor = 6.2, Skill Level = 4.

  • Today is the final day for satellites at Casino Niagara ($70 and $460). When I phoned, there were a lot more players in the $460 interest list at Fallsview, so that is where I'll be driving this afternoon. The last satellite can be as late as 2 AM. In case anybody has satellite vouchers left that they would be willing to sell, please contact me.
