  • What exactly is pipe insulation? I assume you get it at a plumbing place. I would be interested in using that for my rail because as I am discovering, foam is not cheap.

Has anyone used pipe insulation as a rail? Just curious, I just purchased some, and it looks pretty good, cheap cost .65 cent for 6 feet and easy to install.

    Can you post some pics?
  • It is foam insulation that goes around copper pipes. Go to your local hardware store and ask for copper pipe insulation. Home Depot has plenty. Try to buy the largest diameter 2 inch is good if you can find it, but if you only find 1 inch, it is good too, the insulation already has cut line the entire length making installation easy. Most common colour is black.
  • it will to post pictures
  • My wife also suggested thos foam noodles for the pool. Might be worth checking out if somehting like that would work, I haven't yet.
  • Here is Rezdog's pic.

  • NICE!!

I love it! Awesome use of the insulating rubber and those side cup holders are a neat idea too.

    Congrats!

Looks like my padded rail should be shipping today or tomorrow! WOOO
  • wow, that looks great. That would sure save alot of time, effort, adn money. I might go that way instead of using vinyl for a railing.
  • How exactly did you attach the foam?
  • foam has cutline down the center, just open the cutline and spread the pipe apart and attach to edge of table. I didn't use any staples or tacks to fasten securely as the pipe will hold in place when edge of table is between both pieces. But maybe it is good idea to tack down, if you are going to move table to another location. When you see the pipe insulation you will know what I am talking about. If you want e-mail me or Pm me i will send a picture of foam pipe and how to attach via e-mail
  • Thanks Rezdog. I understand how you did it. I figured you would have to fasten it somehow, but I guess it is a tight fit.

    Table looks good.
  • My padded rail come in, and it looks suspiciously like pipe insulation :D

    I'll post some pics soon.
  • I haven't smoothed it out or stapled it down yet, but here are some shots with it attached.

Here is a closeup of the rail material. Seems nice and sturdy, and feels nice and smooth:

Here is a blury shot (hehe) of the rail running down the table. Again, I haven't smothed it out or anything, but it looks ok:

hehehe I'd make you one! Or I could give you a hand with yours.. just buy the material and give me a call :D
  • DJW, are you happy with the rail? Was it worth the wait and expense?
If you don't mind can you let me know what the end cost was after conversion, shipping, tax etc. I am trying to decide what I am going to do for my rail and I would appreciate your feedback.
If you prefer you can pm me.

    Thanks :)
  • No problem, I don't mind saying how much I got fleeced in a public forum :D

The actual rail is pretty good. It's almost like Rezdog's rail, but I think this stuff is a bit more dense, and probably smoother than that kind of pipe insulation. If you looked, i bet you could find this stuff at a pipe warehouse or something.

I think it looks awesome on the table, and it's perfectly cut to fit overtop my 3/4" plywood which is wrapped with 1/4" carpet underlay and pool table felt. I would prefer if the rail was a bit wider at the top (a bit further into the table) than it is, but I guess this leaves more room for all my chips :D

Now, when I ordered this stuff, I knew that it was going to be backordered until 'late march'. They ended up saying in late march that they would ship 'sometime around April 6th'. They were correct, and I got it the next day (from Texas) on April 7th (which I paid for dearly - info below).

The cost was $3.35/foot and I ordered 21 feet (just under a foot longer than I required). The price in USD was $70.35 for the rail. I wanted to have this stuff in time for a tournament that I'm hosting, so I paid for super express 1-2 day international shipping which cost $110.57 (LOL ouch).

    Total cost USD: $189.92

Convert that and you get me = PWN3D

Casino Supply.com only has two shipping options on their website. For 21feet of padded rail you get these options (as of right now):

    UPS Worldwide Expedited $98.74
    UPS Worldwide Express $109.56

So, it's expensive either way. :(

I will be cutting off almost 1 foot of this stuff to make it fit perfectly on the table, if you want, I can ship you the cut off piece so you can see/feel it in Real Life (tm).
  • OUCH.... ...thats to steep for me, I wanted to built table with as little expenses as possible, but still look good. I guess my 65 cent for 6 feet looks pretty good...lol :D
  • Son of a bitch!
I will now get my brain working on a cheaper solution...Thanks for the info and I will keep you guys posted on what, if anything different I come up with.
I am going to buy some pipe insulation and then take it from there...
  • i LOVE the idea of the pen holders to hold drinks!!!
brilliant...i think they look great...worth the price.

    thanks for that suggestion

I picked up the pipe insulation last night as well as some cup holders to screw underneath the table, as per rezdog's advice.

I am really surprised at how good the pipe insul. looks! It come with adhesive on both ends, so the install took about 7 mintutes. Sweet!
The exterior surface is smooth and shiney as well so I think I will be leaving it as is for some time.. :)
  • Pics pls!!

Ok, I will post them later on but my table looks the same as rez dogs...Except my railing is coming off. :D I had a game last night and it was pulling off from people leaning on it.
From now on no one is allowed to have their elbows on my table!
  • had same problem, I stapled the pipe insul. underneath the table , then used brass tacks every 3-4 inches on top of table, seems to work well, if you do not like the brass tack look, spray paint top of tack.

Here is a pic with the rail back on. I guess I will have to staple/tack it now. Rezdog, is it possible for you to email me a close up pic of how you tacked it?
I just added another coat of scotch guard...

Soft and smooth. Its all good. The rail was barely coming off at last nights game...What a difference it makes when the players are sober.

No busted or spilled beers either....but I also got knocked out early so I think I do prefer playing with drunks!
