Cup holders for poker tables?

I have an octagon shaped poker table but sometimes it just isn't big enough so I am going to make a 10-12 person poker table top this weekend.
I have everything (sort of) planned out in my head except for cup holders. I know that is probably going to be the biggest bitch of all, but if possible I would like to install them.

Does anyone know where I can buy cupholders to drop in the holes once cut?
Next problem is that I would need to buy one of those special hole cutting drill bits the exact size of the cup holders..There is no way I am going to cut out 10-12 holes using a jig saw!

  • Im not sure about the cup holders, but the hole drill bit thing is called a hole saw and can be found at any hardware store such as canadian tire, home depot or homehardware. To warn you, holesaws require powerfull drills to use. Good luck and post some pics of the finished table!!

  • I went out yesterday to buy the fabric and table top foam but was unable to find what I am looking for. I went to fabricland and they do not have table top foam and they also did not have the fabric I want, which is only because I am looking for something different from the norm..
I am now going to home depot to buy the plywood and see if they have the tabletop foam. I'll keep you posted and add some pics once I start..

Check out that website I posted. They have padding for under the felt, they have felt, they have soft and rubber padding for the table edge etc etc.

    and the brushes!
  • Yes I had checked them out previoulsy and if I can't find what I am looking for locally then I will have to use them. I had wanted to make the table this weekend but if I can't find what I want around here I will have to order it online and wait.
    Thanks for the help..
  • Good luck with making the table top Esool. would love to see some pics when you're finished.
  • esool: ok cool. I bought some poker table plans off the internet and I wanted to start that project myself this summer. I'm not much of a handyman so we'll see how long it takes me :D

Please let us know how it goes, and you should take pictures as you get along in the project.

    hehe

Day 1: some tears, some bleeding (picture)

    that'll be me.
  • I made a table and for the under-padding, I bought some carpetting foam from Home Depot. Gives a good cushion and is very cheap.
  • Carpet underpading sounds like a good idea!!! Probably cheaper and eassier to get then the real stuff
  • For the cup holders go to a local RV or Camping store. They have various styles and colours of cup holders for (what else) RVs and campers etc.

I bought mine(just plain black) for about $1.50 each, and they are worth EVERY penny.

The best way to cut the holes is with a forstner bit. Lee Valley has them. they are not the cheapest, but they are the best for this project. Just make sure you let the bit cool off between holes. Also, you will need a drill with a 1/2" chuck I believe. Don't even dream about using a cordless drill!

    Mine turned out great!
  • I decided against cup holders because:

    1. Drinks get in the way of dealing/playing.
    2. I don't want drinks at my fancy poker table that I spent 1.e+343893 hours building! :D

I use TV tables spread around the outside of the chairs so people can put their drinks/snacks on those.

The only thing I've been searching for is an old fashioned colored glass hanging light for above my poker table. Has anyone come across a place that sells these? I'd like one with the card suits on them...

    Something like:

    But poker/card themed.
  • Ok I think I found my beer holders! I picked this up at the office depot. It is a $4.50 pencil holder made out of metal. It is 3.5" in diameter with a lip on top.
    IM001498.JPG?dc=4675462174829990314

It is about 4" deep so there is no chance of spilling a drink sitting in one of these babies!
But on the other hand I like the pricing of Jeremy's R/V cup holders better since I will need 12 of these.($60)

Jeremy, what is a forstner bit and what/where is a Lee Valley?

I went to Canadian tire and they sell 3.5" drill saw bits but it was $25 plus the attachment to connect it to your drill was another $12! I am going to check if the home depot rents them.
  • what/where is a Lee Valley?

Pretty much a woodworking store. They have 2 in Toronto, I believe. Toronto west store is on Steeles avenue in Weston (Close to Pine Valley and the 407)

I get their catalogues sent to me. It's one of my father-in-law's (master woodworker) favourite stores.

    hork.
  • Hey Jeremy, any chance you could post a picture of your table? And how long did it take you to build?
  • Very innovative Esool :)
  • I don't have a picture of the completed table, but here are some in progress to give you an idea. I bought the plans Online, and they worked very well. A friend and I built them together, and it took about eight hours total, including picking out and buying the fabric/foam/wood etc. Well worth it.

It sits on 4 legs from IKEA, I think they were 9 or 10 dollars for a set of two legs.

Total cost was less than $150. I don't have an exact amount.

  • Oh yeah,

Lee Valley. I should have said 'saw tooth bits' but they are very similar to forstner bits, anyway you will see what I am talking about.

I only see red x's, is it just me?
I am interested to see and know how you made the rail.

It looks like I am going to be scrapping the cup holder idea since none of my buddies have the tools for me to borrow, and I am not paying $100 for tools and cup holders. Also I am concerned with space when 12 players are at the table.
Maybe I'll just put in one for me.

Next bitch is finding the proper foam. I went to home depot and the foam under padding they had was paper thin. I'll try another carpet place soon..
  • I fixed the pics, but it doesn't show the rail foam construction.

You need fairly thick foam, like I think I used 2 or 3 inch foam you can get it at a fabric store. I got mine at lens mill.

What you do is cut the foam oversized, then cover it with the vinyl. If you have ever done upholstry before, it is basically the same. The curved pieces should be done in sections, using a band of vinyl to cover the joints.

I will take some pictures to show you what i mean in the next few days if you want. Let me know.
  • I still can't see your pics Jeremy :(
  • Jeremy - I can't see any of your pics. Don't know if anyone else has the same problem, but they're dead links on both my computer at home and at work.

    hork.

Yes please post picks and explain it to me like I'm 10yrs old, I do not understand what you are telling me so far. This is going to be one of the very few things I have ever built in my life.
I'm a lover not a builder/fixer.. 8) Remember that I bought an suv to hold one end of the plywood while cutting it. :)

I still only see red x's, but they are nice x's.
  • The images work if you copy and paste the image location. I don't think you can link images offsite with geocities (where they are hosted). Try clicking here:

Nope that didn't work for me either. :x

If you copy and paste those url's in a new window, that worked for me.
  • Holy shit! That table is crazy! Just looking at those pictures scared the shit out of me!

My table will definitely not look that good..I have to go lie down now, I am suddenly very tired...

What size thickness should I be getting the foam in? I was thinking about a 1/4" but perhaps this is too thick?
  • got any pics of the final product? :)

How long did this take if you add it all up?
  • Sweet...has this table been completed? Keep up the good work!
  • #1 Sorry about the pics, they seem to work when I am here, so I don't know what the heck the deal is!

#2 The foam will need to be at LEAST 2" thick

#3 It is complete, and has many a game played on it

#4 I will take/post pics of the final product on the weekend(my camera is on loan to someone)

#5 Actual work time -+6 hours start to finish
Gathering of material adds another chunk of time, depending on your location.

We had two guys working on it, and we made a table each. This speeded things up a ittle, but also took longer, because we made a template for each piece of wood/foam/vinyl. So, if anyone likes the final product and would like to BUY one, are you crazy! This is a labour of love!

I Bought the plans from ebay, and have offered them to Sloth as a prize for something down the road. So maybe you will get them!
  • I just went and checked, the plans call for 2" foam.

It went pretty quickly for us, but we have experience with woodworking and upholstery. On the other hand, it is simpler than it seems, and anyone should be able to produce a table should they choose to put in the time and effort! Do not be afraid!
  • I think I bought the exact same poker plans myself! octagon and round. I'm making the round plans without cup holders.
