  • Very nice.

I started making one myself. I ran into trouble when I was trying to attach the rail, so I put it on hold for a while.

Since then I've purchased a plan from eBay and am ready to get back into it. I'll post pics as I progress.

    hork.
  • Very nice table, Jeremy
  • Thanks, It was totally worth making, and is great to play at. You should get back at it Hork!

#2 The foam will need to be at LEAST 2" thick

I was refering to the foam for the table top...No biggie, I finally bought 1/4" carpet underpadding from home depot last night. ($23) Now I just need to pick up the fabric and I am in business. I am having a real dilema with the fabric. Do I go with something traditional or do I order something crazy funky and possilby be bored with it quickly?...
I will go out looking again tomorrow...
  • Wow, nicely done!! How much were the legs and where did you get them?

It sits on 4 legs from IKEA, I think they were 9 or 10 dollars for a set of two legs.

Total cost was less than $150. I don't have an exact amount.
  • Oh right.. duh. sorry about that :D

I'm going to get the wood today!
  • esool,

let me know how that foam works out. The stuff that I was thinking of trying is the stuff for under the laminate floors, a really thin closed cell foam. I am going to change when/if I ever change the playing surface fabric.
  • Well after seeing other tables on here I decided to go with the casino style 10 person table.

    Some tools required:
    poker01.jpg

    something to hold the wood:
    poker02.jpg

all prepared for some cutting (this is 'good one side' plywood):
    poker03.jpg

string and rope used to draw semi-circle:

my buddy using his jig saw for the first time:

    one side done:

    other side started:
    poker07.jpg

    all cut:

    with the 'good side' up:
    poker09.jpg

    use a bit of imagination:
    poker10.jpg

The good one side plywood was $50 from Rona. Instead of building rails and fighting with foam and vinyl wrapping, I'm going to get 18 feet of this stuff:

    Perfect Padded Rail.

I'm going to get some thin foam for the top, then wrap it in green felt. Once I have it all stappled down, I'm going to attach another thing board (smooth) to the underside to hide staples/imperfections. Then I will add the padded railing stuff and the only thing left is legs. I was thinking of splurging for these:

Solid metal twin posts, with the bar type foot rest all the way around - $150 USD.
  • It looks sweet dude! It looks like you know what you are doing, I bet you finished it in less beers then me!
For the table foam I ended up going with 1/4" carpet underpadding. I searched everywhere for regular foam and came up empty. Now that the under padding is on the table I believe that is the best choice.
I am going out for the fabric today and will post my results when finished..

It looks like your legs and padded rail will co$t you about $275 Canadian plus shipping. You are not screwing around! 8)
(building those rails scare me as well, I might be ordering mine too  )

Cool, I need to go find some foam today, and hopefully some felt, I really want to get this project done! I'll probably check out some underlay to use as well, sounds like a good idea.

    Yeah.

I want to attach some folding legs at first, but purchase the standing base legs and leave them off until I finish my "poker room". Once I have a dedicated spot where the table will go, I'll attach the fancy pants legs.

I'm using my poker winnings to fund the project! Which means this project is getting me further in the hole :D
  • Here is the table on top of my dining room table (which has a leaf in... which is still shorter and thinner than the poker table 8) ). I have laid the padding down on top:

    poker11.jpg

I started by alternating sides and pulling it TOYT and then stappling it underneath:

    poker12.jpg

Here is the table with the padding all stappled underneath (sorry for the blur.. lol I suck..):

    poker13.jpg

I hope to get some felt ASAP! I won't have the legs or the padded rails anytime soon, but I want to have it ready!

    ;)
  • Nice!

What type of felt are you getting? "craft felt"? Pool Table felt?
  • I had purchased some craft felt... it was actually pretty nice for craft felt, but once I unrolled it and looked at it, I noticed the stains. I may just break down and purchase pool table felt.

I plan on drawing the "bet line" as well in yellow around the table.
  • I've heard that craft felt is adequate, except that it wears more easily and would need to be replaced more often than a higher quality felt such as pool table felt.

My original table had vinyl as the playing surface. I was thinking of reducing the wear as well as built-in spill protection. The cards slide fairly well on the viynl I bought.

I scrapped that table prior to completion as I didn't really know what I was doing. I started to put it together from scratch just based on the vision in my head... but ran into difficulty with the rail. Also, I don't think it's going to be big enough.

So I bought a plan for a table and am going to start over. Still haven't decided between vinyl and felt. felt would be preferable, but I think I'd like to see if I can get a deal on pool table felt.

Will post pictures as I progress on the new table.

    hork.
  • Hork: Cool! I priced out some pool table felt and it's about 2x the price of the craft felt, but obviously built to last. If I can't find anything else at the craft store when I return my felt, then I will get the pool table stuff.

What kind of table are you building (size, shape etc)?
  • Thinking about an octagonal one. It'll have trays and cupholders with a pedestal base.

I'd love to make a full-sized oval table, but I don't have the space in the house to dedicate to a permanent table of that size. It's either that or a pool table, and right now the pool table is a higher priority. (as long as I have a poker table that will seat 6-8)

I bought some plans off eBay, though now that I'm seeing some of the tables you guys are making, I'm beginning to reconsider the custom-made type I'd love to add my own flair to the project. I'll just have to plan more carefully this time....

There's a guy selling felt on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3177025942&category=19085

$50 for 70" x 50".... Don't know what the quality is like (other than it is "100% Genuine Felt") but his feedback is good...
    Worth investigating.

That's what I was thinking originally. But since our game can have up to 10 people, I changed my mind to the round plans. Then when I saw esool's table on here, I decided to go big or go home! 8)

I think everyone I know bought those exact same plans! lol The only thing that scares me about those are making the rails...

Hrmm... I need at least 98x50 as the table is 96x48, and I need the little bit extra so I can wrap and staple it. Good find though, would be perfect for the round or octagon table design.[/b]
  • From his auction:

*If your table is too large for this cloth, I also make custom cloths to fit larger tables. Email the dimensions of your table and I will give you a quote, then list an auction on ebay for your custom cloth. Please email me with any questions.

he might be able to accomodate you. Though I would send him an email beforehand asking if he could give you any more detail on the specs of his cloth... what grade, thread count, thickness.... (I don't know my felt terminology, but if he's selling lots of it, it would be nice if he did. :) )

    hork.
  • Serves me for not reading the ENTIRE THING IN LARGE FONT ON A GREEN BACKROUND

I wonder if he would send a sample... I would really like to touch the felt In Real Life (tm) before buying...
  • Good idea. If he does send you a sample let me know how it is...
  • I sent him that request, I'll let you know what he says.
  • Hork, I went to 5 fabrics stores yesterday looking for my "one of a kind" fabric. I found pool table felt at the fabricland in the shoppers world mall (Brampton). Thay had various colours but not what I was looking for...It was $20 per meter or yard by 5'.

I am going to one last store today and I am just going to buy whatever the feck I find, I am pissed of with all this shopping around!!
  • DEFINATELY stay away from the craft felt. it starts to pill almost right away.
  • Hork: the guy replied to me asking for an address. If you want, send him an email as well and get some felt sent to you.

I decided to just pick up some pool table felt instead and a pool table brush.

The pool place also had some clay chips - OH MY! those are soooooo nice but soooooooo expensive :P
  • Ok, here are a few more pics.

Here it is, the magic.. the FELT! ® (Pool table type):

    poker14.jpg

I laid it out on the table... looks niiiiicceeeeee:

    poker15.jpg

Ok, enough fooling around. I bought some cheap (for now) folding banquet table legs form Home Depot ($17 for the pair! cheap!):

    poker16.jpg

And here they are all folded down:

    poker17.jpg

Next up is to attach the felt very carefully, and then I need to wait for my padded rail rubber to arrive. *sigh*. Anyhow, we will be trying the table out this weekend. 10 person game is planned.

Also, a tip for attaching pool table felt: The guy running the store suggested to spray ( with a spray bottle - mist mode) some water over the felt as we were attaching it. He said that when you attach it a bit wet, it will shrink slightly when drying and give you that really TOYT fit.

I still want to paint a yellow betting line around the table... I'm not sure how I'm going to do this yet (what paint to use etc). Any ideas?
  • Oh, I thought I would give you an idea of the cost to date:

    8"x4"x3/4' Plywood: $50 (Rona)
1 Set of metal folding banquet table legs: $17 (Home Depot)
100 pack of screws: $2.59 (Home Depot)
    100'x60' foam padding: $9.00 (Fabricland)
100'x72' pool table felt: $130.00 ( AVO Recreation )
1 Pool table felt brush: $9.00 ( AVO Recreation )

The padded rail should cost about $82 CDN once I order it. (online)

    So $217.59 + $82 = $299.59.

Seems like a lot, but that's not too bad. Almost 50% of my cost is the felt. I had originally purchased $60 felt from Frabricland, but it was stained, and I read here, and elsewhere that the fabric store felt is not meant to last, unlike pool table felt. You could definately save a bunch on that though, if you wanted.
  • Still, $300 for a table that would retail, what, $2000?

I'd say you're better off for spending the extra on the felt. (good pickup with the brush too...)

    hork.
  • Now that you have the legs how sturdy is the table? Are you going to re-enforce the underside? I may add legs to mine or maybe just leave it as a top, possibly depending on your answer.
Let me know how it holds up when you have your game with all the players leaning on the table etc.
