  • 50k/100k hu he had a +100bb swing. That's not unbelievable in an ultra-aggressive hu match.

Phil Ivey is Chuck Norris in that funny Chuck Norris email.

Chuck Norris’ hand is the only hand that can beat a Royal Flush.

I could go on with the metaphorical superlatives...but seriously, is there anyone on this board who doesn't think Phil Ivey is the best poker player on the planet?

    atleast 1.
  • They did start at 30k/60k for the first 2 days I believe. 100 BB or not, 10 million is 10 million and Ivey is not a multi-billionaire. He also was probably not playing with his own money, but the pressure must have still been intense, especially when he was raising every hand and taking "no plays off".

In any case, he laid the smack down on a guy who did extremely well against some of the top cash game experts in the world. Maybe they all softened AB up and Phil swooped in for the kill shot, but Ivey dusted him off and sent him packing... Hopefully AB will come back to take on Ivey - that would be crazy.

So if anyone doesn't think Ivey is the best, who would you rank ahead of him. I'm interested to hear. I think this legendary performance seals the number 1 ranking.
  • #1 at what? Ultra high-limit HU LHE? I guess he's the best if you want to base your ranking on 2 sessions. No doubt Ivey is one of the best high stakes poker players, but I think that ranking is impossible wrt to these hu matches.

    He's no Antonio...rocks and rings baby :D

    uh...that was a joke
  • Well, obviously it's subjective. There is no exact formula to determine who the best is. That's what makes the debate fun.

I can say that my ranking comes from the fact that he levelled Andy Beal when nobody seemed that intent on playing him after he won the 10 mil from the corp. That deathblow earns him the ranking of Alpha Dog in my books. Plus he's been extremely successful in both cash games and tournaments the last 2 years, and can play Hold Em, Omaha and Stud with ease.

It's not just about HU limit against a renegade billionaire. But that's a pretty nice cherry on top, and makes him Vegas' top gunslinger today.
  • In this month's Cardplayer Todd Brunson stated that the corporation took Beal for around $40mil over 3 years.
  • what the hell is phil ivey, a robot? this guy is scary...

and what took him so long to play beal, jesus...

i dont think so. my understanding was that when Beal took the 10 mill he was up overall. when ivey won that would put the pros back up but nowhere near 40 mil. didnt ivey take 16.5 mill total? 6.5 on one day and 10 mil the next day?

I am talking about the previous sessions between the Corp and Beal.

In this months Card Player Lisa Wheeler interviews Todd Brunson. This exert is taken from page 52.

LW: The Andy Beal game was a recurring one. How much money do you believe was won for your team over the course of time?

TB: I figure we won about $40 million over three years.
