  • CTV shill!!!!!!!

Lol, I was thinking that as I posted it. It sounds like I work for CTV or something, and then I realized that that is actually the case, for once. I'm so used to saying 'The Golden Nugget is awesome' and then saying (no, I'm not on the payroll) or 'PokerStars has awesome tournaments!' followed by (no, I don't work there). On this one, I got nothing. You got me, I work there. AND I get paid an extra dollar for every one of you that watches 'The Casino' tonight!!!

  • If I watch will you give me a dollar :D joking, ive been looking forward to it for a pretty long time.
  • i watched tonight.
when they showed the Nugget's opening night performance by the singer there were only a few people watching.
It passed too quickly but i saw a table of 2 well known poker pros who gave a wave and smile to the camera, while they were there taking in the guys lame-ass tunes.
It went too quickly for me to catch both, but I definitely saw my buddy Chris Bigler with a big smile on. Couldnt catch the other guy with him, but know hes a poker player. Johnny Chan it coulda been??
Lemme know if you guys noticed.

    yyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaa bbbabby!!! - "chris bigler"
  • Hey Kev,

I taped the show, and just checked out the scene you described. There is a shot of two guys--one white, one Asian--having a good time watching in the audience. The white guy looked familiar to me; this is probably Chris Bigler. I don't know who the Asian guy was unfortunately, but it definitely wasn't Chan.

Overall, I was kind of disappointed with the show. I guess I thought it would be a little more 'reality' and a little less 'television'. A lot of the scenes seemed really contrived to me. The frat pack and the hookers they hired, the high-roller and the guy he almost slept with, etc...

Maybe I'm asking for too much, but I was hoping for a much less staged show that dealt more with the two owners, and less with stupid fluff 'Survivor' drama like the whole musician/entertainment director feud.

That being said, I'll probably give it one more shot next week.

  • What about the part when Big Chuck started to hit on that guy lol. That was great!

My guess is that she (erm, he) turns out to be part of Chuck's card counting team. 8)

  • Seemed fake.

Why would they have a camera follow around a flagged player?

Interesting, though. I'll tune in next week.

Let alone, why would they let a known card counter play a hand of BJ?

  • I agree that the show could've been a little less "staged" but there were some good moments. ( I knew that girl was a guy the minute he opened his mouth.) But the real reason I watched it was to see the lounge singer who hails from Vancouver. It's great to see some Canadian talent get showcased everyweek across North America.
  • I was the guest poster. I registered but I guess it didn't log me in.

Anyways, I had no idea that lounge singer was from Vancouver. I'm from Van. What's his name?

Why not? His edge doesn't kick in until his 2nd hand.

Well, assuming he (or one of his teammates) is at least watching the table prior to his playing one hand, he can still know the count and gain an edge by playing only one hand. (And assuming he is allowed to enter a game mid-shoe... sometimes this is not allowed, for this reason.)

I believe this was the basic idea of one of the main plays used by the MIT blackjack team. The "big player" would wait for a signal from a teammate who had been playing several hands for small bets at a table. After receiving the "good count" signal, the big player would sit down and make one (or a small number) of huge bets when the count was favorable.

The purpose of this was that, to the house, the big player simply had the appearance of an erratic high roller, moving from table to table making a few enormous bets.

  • I'm not positive but I think it's Mat Durk..or something like that..
  • Oh and by the way, what would you do while playing BlckJck and you have 9-9 and dealer shows 7. I'd personally stay, the best card the dealer can get gives him 17 in which he has to stay and u beat him, any mid range card 5-higher gives him good odds to bust. If i'd split my 9-9 the very best i could do now is make 19's which is only one better than i had in the first place.. I dunno what would u do?

Basic strategy says to split 99 except against a dealer 7, 10, or A.

So the "clueless" guy actually answered the big shot's question correctly, but then his follow-up comment to the effect of "I never split 9's" is certainly non-optimal strategy. If you don't split 99 against a dealer 6 for example, you're missing a lot of bets. 8)

    agreed :o

i'll give the show 5/10

expected more...seems its' just all hype thus far...what hype?
  • small correction: if a dealer shows a 7, he could have 18.
which would still only be a push, i know.

    True enough.

I guess instead of the "best" card the dealer could get, maybe Fielder69 should have said the "most likely" card.

Depending on the exact holdings of the players, the best card for the dealer (from the house's point of view) may very well be a 4.

any possibility it'll get yanked before all episodes is aired

    all_aces what ya rate yesterday's episode? :D

    i gave it a 5/10
  • Hey CO,
any possibility it'll get yanked before all episodes is aired

No chance... it's Mark Burnett, the producer of 'Survivor' and 'The Apprentice' (I enjoy both of those shows from time to time...). He could put a camera in his bathroom and tape himself sitting down to read a good book, and it would go to series, and get huge ratings.
all_aces what ya rate yesterday's episode?

In terms of my personal enjoyment of the show, I'd have to go a couple of notches lower, at 3/10. It's possible that the reason I disliked it so much was because I'd built up some big expectations. The promos they've been running for it made it look like a show that I'd definitely be interested in.

Unfortunately, I can't buy into this type of show. Either sell it as a reality show, or sell it as a 'traditional' scripted show. This show is neither, and will consequently appeal to fewer people than any of Burnett's previous endeavours.

We are not his target audience though. We know enough about casinos and gambling to know that a card counter wouldn't have a camera crew following him around, no matter how big his ego is. And everything that happened that was supposed to be spontaneous came off, to me, as being forced, and contrived. 100% cheese.

Like I said though, the only reason I have anything to say about it at all, or have any feelings towards it one way or the other, is because the promos made it look like a really good show, and I was looking forward to getting into it. I don't watch much TV, and I was looking forward to the idea of there being a show--besides '24'--that actually appealed to me.

  • What's 24. i don't do much TV either. I cancelled all my channels because of summer. I can't even watch poker anymore. Is there anysite on-line that a person can watch TV for free. I know there used to be one but I think it got shut down. Anyone see the world series of blackJack? I thought that was pretty cheesy.

Each season of 24 is 24 episodes which each represent one hour of a continuous 24 hour time period. It's an action series based around counter-terrorism.

Awesome show, and Kiefer rules. :)
