  • What's 24. i don't do much TV either. I cancelled all my channels because of summer. I can't even watch poker anymore. Is there anysite on-line that a person can watch TV for free. I know there used to be one but I think it got shut down. Anyone see the world series of blackJack? I thought that was pretty cheesy.

Let alone, why would they let a known card counter play a hand of BJ?

Why not? His edge doesn't kick in until his 2nd hand.

    Keith

Well, assuming he (or one of his teammates) is at least watching the table prior to his playing one hand, he can still know the count and gain an edge by playing only one hand. (And assuming he is allowed to enter a game mid-shoe... sometimes this is not allowed, for this reason.)

I believe this was the basic idea of one of the main plays used by the MIT blackjack team. The "big player" would wait for a signal from a teammate who had been playing several hands for small bets at a table. After receiving the "good count" signal, the big player would sit down and make one (or a small number) of huge bets when the count was favorable.

The purpose of this was that, to the house, the big player simply had the appearance of an erratic high roller, moving from table to table making a few enormous bets.

I was just being an ass....

Each season of 24 is 24 episodes which each represent one hour of a continuous 24 hour time period. It's an action series based around counter-terrorism.

Awesome show, and Kiefer rules. :)

    Hey CO,
any possibility it'll get yanked before all episodes is aired

No chance... it's Mark Burnett, the producer of 'Survivor' and 'The Apprentice' (I enjoy both of those shows from time to time...). He could put a camera in his bathroom and tape himself sitting down to read a good book, and it would go to series, and get huge ratings.
all_aces what ya rate yesterday's episode?

    i gave it a 5/10

In terms of my personal enjoyment of the show, I'd have to go a couple of notches lower, at 3/10. It's possible that the reason I disliked it so much was because I'd built up some big expectations. The promos they've been running for it made it look like a show that I'd definitely be interested in.

Unfortunately, I can't buy into this type of show. Either sell it as a reality show, or sell it as a 'traditional' scripted show. This show is neither, and will consequently appeal to fewer people than any of Burnett's previous endeavours.

yeah that's why i gave it a 5/10 cuz of MB  if it was someone else maybe just 1/10

We are not his target audience though. We know enough about casinos and gambling to know that a card counter wouldn't have a camera crew following him around, no matter how big his ego is. And everything that happened that was supposed to be spontaneous came off, to me, as being forced, and contrived. 100% cheese.

Agreed. I myself would have prefered a straight-up non-fiction documentary about these new casino owners and their new casino (you know, I don't even know if that particular aspect of the show is actually real).

Of course, this would probably appeal to a narrower audience still...

The show turned out instead to be what I would call a fiction documentary. Too fake to appeal to anyone as a legitimate documentary, but too boring to appeal to anyone as fiction (i.e. a reality show, or whatever format they were trying to go for).

I'll give it 2 out of 5 Jigglypuffs.

    EVIL
  • It's so staged it's not even funny. However, it was semi-entertaining. I will watch next week if I happen to be infront fo the tv when it comes on.
  • I also feel it was staged/scripted and overall wasn't overly impressed....perhaps a 4/10
  • will watch it tonite...wonders if it'll be worst than last week or what? LOL
  • has anyone watched "American Casino" ? its pretty good, not sure when or what channel its on because i just get it from Bit Torrent but you should all check it out.
  • thought it was on NBC but found it on FOX?
  • OK I watched tonight's episode and here's what I think: that potential 'would-be' swinger guy has got to do something about his hair. His wife is hot. He needs to do something about his hair. And he should have been gently nudging his wife in the direction of either of the other women. But I digress.....

I think this episode was less contrived than the first one, though not by much. The whole 'swingers' thing just had me thinking: "I wonder if the presence of television cameras and the promise of national television exposure is in any way influencing this couple's decision about whether or not to have sex with other couples?" However, I did kinda enjoy the stuff about the high rollers losing 200K, ripping up the cards, getting reprimanded, leaving, and then getting wooed back.

  • Merely 1 out of 5 Jigglypuffs from me this time. Like those card ripping skids, I'm going to need something significant to woo me back to this show.

Was this the bad hair episode?

I like how they want you to learn some bizzare-O world casino fact each episode. Like don't split 99 vs. a dealer 7. Or you can bend and rip cards at Baccarat. (In Mini-Baccarat, can you just rip the cards a little bit?)

Every time I saw the sign for Zax, or saw that new kid Zack (real cute play on words there) I twitched a couple of times and pushed FF. I see that the style of new characters (i.e. the dog walking, purse-bearing kid) they are introducing is nicely following in the highly successful tradition of fan favorites like Wesley Crusher.

    Or Merth.

The Golden Nugget has poker, right? Wake me up when they start playing some high-stakes holdem with Lederer. 8)

It's quickly becoming a very close EV decision whether I should watch The Casino, or watch dry paint dry even further.

Oh, any why not 0 out of 5 JP's? There were some cool overhead shots of Vegas. Man that's good.

    ScottyZ

P.S. If you don't know who Merth is, don't worry about it. You probably won't get the joke. :)

yeah the high roller brothers losing 200 K was funny stuff LOL

what's next weeks show about?
  • Tonights episode was bizarre. Almost like a soap-opera, complete with maybe the scariest looking guy I have seen on TV. Ernie, the coked-out pimp who tried to recruit the blonde girl, looked like he got released from prison 3 hours before the show was taped. If that guy sat across from me at a table, I couldn't concentrate on my cards. I'd be too afraid that he might shank me under the table if I river'd him, or at least sic some of his hired goons/gang members from the pen on me.

And then the "high-rollers" that totally used Tim and Tom - like WTF! They came off like losers - the owners that is - they got dumped on, on their own show. It was kind of embarrassing. And all they talk about is "Oldtime Vegas", well if those dudes wanted to really be like oldtime Vegas, they would have Ernie on the payroll, to take those poker players out back and beat and give them the San Quentin salute. I thought Joe Pesci was going to come out for a second.

The absolute worst was the dealer lady - she looked like Steve Bushemi in lipstick. She was also apparantly incapable of stopping that farmer guy from almost assulting the young girl. But, alas, she "only deals the cards" because it is stictly forbidden to bother swarthy guys when they are creepin out the ladies at the black-jack tables.

And what was up with them dissing the view! They were zinging the view, making the hotel look cheap, and like a dump, when they were in the best suite in the place. I can't believe that Tim and Tom liked that part - but I guess Mark Burnett has got some balls on him. I actually like that he is making it look realistic in that sense - the high-rollers dissing the place - even if the rest of the show is more scripted than Dynasty reruns. But it could be a ploy to make it seem more realistic, having controversy and people who are trying to say that the Golden Nugget is a dump compared to the big corporate casino's on the strip.

Like the dealer kid, who was mouthing off to the lady in the pit. What was up with that kid? He looked like he was on about 7 cups of coffee and a couple of riddlin. What a punk. I'd love to go there and see if he is actually a real dealer...What do you guys think?

But actually there was a really cool part in the show, where the group of guys all collected their $1 bills, and then when they had 1,000, they put it down on one hand of black jack. That was a very cool idea. I'm starting my collection tonight...

Still I'd definitely check it out when I go back to Vegas, especially since All_Aces said the poker room was sweet...at least to sit down for a session, but I'd probably stay on the Strip, or else at the Palms or the Hard Rock.

  • Oh ya all_aces, I've got a little trip coming up too...next Friday at the BIPC 4.

Since I've already placed 2nd and 3rd at this invitational event (of which I am sure you are reasonably familiar) I desperatly need a win to fill out my ledger. Once I get that win, I will gladly regale the board with a blow-by-blow account. Rest assured that I won't go into any details about the performance of any hosts that may or may not bust out first, and then be forced to pass the rest of the evening, smoking, drinking and desperately waiting for someone else to play 9-ball with....no, I won't speak of that at all.

Never first, eh... that must feel awful. 2nd and 3rd is OK, but man, first is... well, it's indescribable. But it's tough trying to convey how good it feels to get 1st at a BIPC to someone who's only come in 2nd and 3rd, so I won't carry on about this too much longer....

Hmm... you sound like you've been there before. Has this happened to you? Maybe at BIPC2? Must be traumatic. ;)

For those who don't know, BIPC is a single-table tournament I host every month and a half or so. A BIPC trip report would be interesting, actually... most of the players (except for myself and AK*1 of course...) know what they're doing, more or less, so there are usually some interesting hands that come up.

On a completely seperate note, never book a flight with CanJet. I'm at Pearson with my brother and my girlfriend for 6 hours this afternoon. They tell me the six-hour delay is due to a late incoming flight before mine or something... yeah, right. A late incoming flight before mine accounts for a one hour delay... maybe two. Six hours is an administrative error somewhere. I even confirmed my flight details late last night. Doesn't matter, I'm here for six damn hours. I figured I might as well find a public internet terminal and surf the web for a while. This blows.

Does CanJet even exist any more? I thought they morphed into Jetsgo.

See if you can find some rich cowboy who'll bet with you on when the plane from Ithica arrives.

  • Nice attention to detail. At one point Tommy is dealing the girl he "tagged a few times" cards which have rounded corners (indicating that they are used casino cards), and deals himself regular unrounded cards.

    Mechanic!

I wonder how many psychics work for the average Vegas casino...
