2006 Poker Goals

Since Trevor bumped the old post on how people did, let's see....let's go with 2006 goals.

1) Move my bankroll to 5 figures.
2) Money in the WSOP event #2
3) Have poker completely finance my #2 trip
4) Win the 100K great canadian poker tourney (if that ever happens)

Good Luck everyone

  • Good idea Joe. Mine are:
    1) Win a 1000+ MTT
    2) Learn to play cash/ring games
    3) Increase my bankroll by 5x
    4) Pay for a family trip to Disney from my winnings
    5) Keep things balanced (family/work) while playing more

#1 is an "independant" goal, while 2-4 pretty much depend on each other, and my ability to continue playing at all rides on #5 :)
  • 1) Play a lot more live Poker...now that my son is a little older this should be possible

    2) Money in the Paradise Masters Main Event next weekend

    3) Start a poker league in London and revitalize the London poker scene a little

    4) Download an avatar for the Poker Forum

    5) Hold another charity event for another family in need
  • Great Thread....ok here we go!

    1. Win a Bristol Street Classic: even Registering for a BSC is a challenge let alone winning one, but a goal is a goal.

    2. Open one more online account, at PokerStars.

    3. Play (and Money) in a Casino Tournament.

    4. Play more online satellites, and qualify for something "big" (WSOP?)

    5. Learn more games. Omaha, Omaha LO, whatever.

    6. Have my bankroll make my Vegas trip a freeroll.

  • And to borrow (steal) Johnnie's goals, slightly modified for my own purposes.....

Ditto here, especially for some of us who can't always be sitting on the net hitting refresh...  Does merry XMAS madness count as a classic?

    2.  Open one more online account, at PokerStars.

Actually decrease the number, just verified, now have 11 live real money accounts, all with $$$'s sitting in them.. Started with a $30. deposit a year ago.

    3.   Play (and Money) in a Casino Tournament.

    Ditto here

    4.  Play more online satellites, and qualify for something "big"  (WSOP?)

Ditto here, at least win a satellite into something.... anything at all...

    5.  Learn more games.  Omaha, Omaha LO, whatever.

Naw, the money's in Hold-em, at least live..

    6.  Have my bankroll make my Vegas trip a freeroll.

Done, I can't imagine anyone who can do well at Bristol or Westend not freerolling a trip to Vegas, at least as long as you play sober while there...  The poker is so poor at the lower limits there, it really is like picking it off trees.

  • 1/ Study more...more books, dvd's, and then re read them over again. This time, take notes!!

2/ Play more single table SNG's, and start playing more MTT's.

3/ Find out why the river card always seems to screw me :rage:

4/ Play more aggressively when called for. If anything, I tend to be much too passive most of the time. This MUST change!!

5/ Hold a charity game, or satellite to another charity game. This was a blast to organize, and I beleive everyone who participated in the last one, had a good time.

6/ Play some B&M games. Not necessarily casinos, but more of the undergroud club circuits in the area.

7/ RECORD EVERYTHING! TRACK EVERY CENT, WIN OR LOSE.
  • 1. Increase tournament play

    2. Stay Focused in tournaments when I go deep(a major issue for me)

    3. Track my results regularly

    4. Stop playing beyond my bankroll.

    Good luck this year everyone.
  • Goal # 1
To invest in, (and learn to use properly) Pokertracker software

    Goal # 2
To continue to improve my ring game and step up a limit online

    Goal # 3
To use my FPPs to try to win something big
  • 1) To get a lot more familiar with my newly registered Poker Tracker software and use its information more.

    2) To play in a live MTT

    3) To cash in a MTT over $1000 profit

    4) To read at least ten poker books I have bot yet read
  • I want to nake the final table of a big MTT (1000+). I haven't played many of these, just cash games and SNGs, but i got Harrington vol. 1 & 2 for christmas :D so I'm looking to use that knowledge and go very very deep.

Also, not exactly a goal, but something I'm looking forward to; I'm turning 19 soon (woohoo), so that means i can finally go to a casino!! Probably go with my brother, and if the play is as bad as everyone says it is at low limits I definately looking forward to walking out with some cash. Although I'm guessing that the first time I go play live will I be I will be nervous...
  • Here are my goals....

    1. Increase bankroll so I can play $10-$20 every session @ Brantford.
    2. Win (along w/teamates) the Royal Cup.
    3. Play in event #4 at WSOP.
    4. Acquire the most points in the 2006 Poker Forum Tournaments.
  • Great goals everyone -- got me thinking.  I found Alan Schoonmaker's recent articles in Cardplayer magazine quite interesting.  He really does a good job of outlining how to plan your personal development.  Have a read http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_magazine/writers/view/name/Alan%20Schoonmaker .  Then again, I'm partial to old fat guys who are pretty good poker players.

    Cheers
    Magi
  • To stop using my bankroll for booze and hookers. :D
  • LOL Hammer, and my motto for a while after a large MTT win was to cash back and buy lots of alcohol.........
  • Win a standard (non-SnG) MTT...open a Party account...

  • Good post...I am completely changing my whole outlook and goals as it pertains to poker. 2005 was ultimately whore as much as possible with my meager skill set, hopefully enough for a Vegas trip. I managed that...but find it's such a boring grind I ended up not enjoying poker.....I mean really how much fun can you have mutli-tabling over two monitors with 4, 6, or 8 windows open? More importantly how can you improve that way.

    2006 goals:

    1. Reduce reload/bonus whoring and overall time on-line (I still have to do it to generate a bank roll for now but damn does it get boring and time consuming..it's almost like work?)
    2. Spend more time improving tournament play, play some 'bigger' on-line sng's and tourneys one at a time so I can enjoy the game again! Ultimately I'd love to have enough ROI here to substitute bonus whoring completely and strictly play sng's and tourneys!!!
    3. Get out to more live events (Brent I will get there, seriously, one day!!!!)
    4. Money at Zithal's (even if I have to break in some night he is not there and play headsup against myself)
    5. When bankroll reaches x, move half of it into my bank account and rebuild, repeat.
  • 1. Win something, I came close a few times in 2005, 2 seconds at Bristol, 2 seconds at Lucky Lou's live/online, 2nd at Beanies...I need a title, it won't bring respect to my weak-tight image...but, I'll feel better about my game
    2. Continue to grow as an online player, read/win and repeat
    3. Play (win, whore, Blackjack) my families way to Disney for 2007
    4. Restrict my play to 20hrs a week, live or otherwise but still reach goal 3
    5. FINALLY get the deal done on the purchase of the business and build the daylights out of that in 2006

2006 is guaranteed to be a year of change for my family as my job ends and a new career starts.

Great health and wealth to all forum members in 2006. You all helped make 2005 a great year.
  • Big E.

It is possible to clear bonus's on some sites through sng's and MTT's. I'm clearing my 600 bonus on eurobet playing sng's. I agree it's a grind clearing bonus's but I find it well worth it. It's the point of I HAVE to play 7 SNG's a day to clear the bonus. If I don't make 7 today it's got to be made up. Well somedays I do way more than that, it's just the point of you have to do it. Since I"ve done the 3 table max I have found my roi has gone up considerably too.
  • My goal is to win an event worthy of justifying a tatoo of the Two Cards with which I win. Fingers crossed for J4s.
  • Nice post. My goals in fairly random order:

    1) Double my profits from the previous year. OK, a little results oriented, but figure should be doable assuming my progression in limits over the past year. (at least this is something I can measure)
    2) Play at Bellagio, and perhaps Binions in the pending Vegas trip this year (stuck to the lower limits last time, but wouldn't mind poking my nose into some of the more "heralded" rooms)
    3) Play in a $10-$20 game live.
    4) Make it out to some of the K-W events that I hear so much about here, but just never manage to get off my ass and go to.
  • Great thread!

    1. Improve my NL tournament game. I've been letting some bad online habits creep into my live tournament game. The second half of '05 wasn't a dismal tournament run for me.
    2. Win a Bristol St. (And I'm going to do this by declaring Bristol St Classic XXIII a head's up match between me and my cat - I'm roughly even money at that point)
    3. Build the bankroll to move from 2/4 to 3/6, dabbling in 5/10 online and get more experience with shorthanded tables.
    4. (bonus) Whore my way to Vegas.
    5. Create the first "Legends of Bristol St. DVD"
  • Good thing I wait until this paying to post system is out to post here :D
Honestly tho, I wanted to take a little bit of time to think so therefore I haven't posted in this thread.

    1. Win a MTT online

    2. Win a Bistrol Street

    3. Reading and applying some of the concepts and stop playing like a tight-passive pu$$y

    4. Continue to build my bankroll through winning/whoring/whatever

Interesting, at first look on Party, Stars, and Paradise it looked a little hard to clear playing MTT's and SNG's what sites does this work for you on?

I certainly know I will still have to reload and whore to keep the bankroll growing, however it got way out of hand....last year it took me all year to go from $100 to $1300 playing micro limits but I enjoyed it, in Nov I cashed out $1200 for a Vegas trip (well worth it) and came back with over $800 which I put in my account (read: gave to wife)...since then I've whored anything and everything and have had my account up to $1000 twice, moving $500 to a bank account each time I hit the $1000 mark..and it was not fun at all...it was a grind and my play, IMHO, has no way of improving playing this much this fast. I think slowing down and taking a portion of my whoring money to play higher buy-ins and/or more live seats and focus on improving and enjoying the game more means more to me......that said it'll be nice if the profit can still pay for the holidays each year :)

To pose another question, not to hijack this thread...but how do other people approach the game online as far as building bankroll, improving game, and do most of you play for the enjoyment of the game or simply to try and make as much $$$ as possible?

I moved this question here http://pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=7477.0
  • My wife says I'm addicted. So I quit cold turkey as of now to prove her wrong. No poker. No forum. Nothing.

......for one week. Ha! See what she knows. Then I will play more than ever.

    See you in a week.

I'd love to see a thread just on this actually - I've been wondering the same thing.

    As for 2006 goals....

For the most part, I just want to get an understanding of where I am as a player....so tracking my play is my number 1 priority. Other than that, I'd like to play more live games, more live tournaments, and maybe start hosting a home game or two.
  • My goal is to continue getting a free poker education by going to the free bar tournaments.  Instead of getting very expensive lessons by gambling, I have had a steep learning curve from my mistakes without losing any money. :)

    1) Win several more tournaments in the free Pirana Poker Tour to qualify for the grand championship where the winner gets a free U$10,000 seat to a WSOP event in Las Vegas! I have already won one tournament in 2006, getting a gift certificate and a good chance at qualifying.

    2) Win another tournament(s) in the free RHPT to qualify for the tournament to be Daniel Negreanu's protege.  I won a tournament last month, getting gift certificates and a hat.

    3) Win a tournament at NPT ($10 minimum bar order) to qualify for the 500-person tournament that is supposedly for a free seat and session with Antonio Estafandiari.  I have qualified in several of their finals.

    4) Win a tournament at PK and qualify for the championship tournament.  I have always finished in the Top 9 of their tournaments, including a 2nd place finish when I won a prize.

    5) I was thinking of qualifying for FSPT's championship tournament, but they charge an illegal $10  :rage: so there is a better chance of their bars getting shut down than me winning the grand prize. Instead of spending over $200 in their tournaments without getting any food or drink, I would much rather use that money to play in more cash games.

    6) Play in more live cash games or rake-free SNG tournaments where there are worse players than me.

    7) Once I have earned my free undergraduate degree in poker, start playing with real money in the casinos and online whoring.
  • Ok see 2006 HIJACKED How to build a bankroll which I started here http://pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=7475.0 to avoid this thread from losing it's original goal. Thanks for the input this has worked out to be a great thread.
  • 1) Win the Inaugural Season of The Edmonton Poker League
    2) Play in and finish in the money at a CPT Event
    3) Win the Canadian Open Poker Championship
  • I only have a few goals for this year:

    1) Play more lives games as I find I don't play enough

    2) Try and play 1/2 NL

    3) Build my Bankroll

    4) Study more.

For this year I have actually start tracking my progress win/loss, buy-in, etc. and found out I'm not as bad as I think as I'm. Not that I'm a great player.
  • need to learn all the acronyms and jargon to understand every thread
  • 1) Less total playing time, more focused when I play.

    2) Quicker hook when I'm not playing my 'A' game.

    3) Play something big. (Win something big)
