  • Quite a few of us made it past the first round.

Round two I finnshed third at my table. roughly 40th I think.
  • I Got into the tourney today. Started with 5000 in chips blinds started at 100-200 and blinds going up every 10 min. Got into the first round and got to low to med chips around 1800 with 1 player out at my table. Tables were of 11, clawed my way back to 3 way semi bullied my way around 2nd in chips all 3 of us were about even about 2500 - 3000 separated us took out the 3rd guy and heads up blinds were 4000 - 8000 got in the small blind raised all -in he contemplated for about 4 or 5 min then folded. About 3 to 1 chip lead on him, next hand he limps in I re-raise all-in again for about 8 - 10 min then folds. Next hand I am small blind he goes all in for less than he doesn't have enough for the big blind he has 5700 I think I am small blind for 4000 to me 1300 more what else I call he has 77 I end up spiking a 9 on the river to win the first round.

Semi-finals 2nd hand in I am in the big blind I raise pre-flop to 1800 with 2 callers 1 being the small blind first guy folds small guy calls right away so I think he might have A K anyways flop comes 559 he checks I go all-in for 3700 he calls 3500 he turns over A 5 OS I flipped out I am left with 2 chips 200 I am the button goes all the way around the table then the blinds go up to 200-400 I don't even have enough for the big blind 3 other callers I quadruple up to 800 keeps on snowballing and now I am heads up with the chip leader with 6500 not to bad with 200 left in chips. 1st hand Q C 5 C big blind he limos in blinds are only 300-600 so I check flop comes Q J 9 I go all in with top pair he calls with you guessed it he had 10 8 I was done I win that round I go to the final table but know such luck.

It was good to see Acid Joe, Aimee, Dead Money, esool, compuease & The Prophet 22.

  • Ya, I was there too, recognized a few faces from the Labatt poker tour, Poker with a cause ( little girl Faith, hope she's doing OK)and Degree Freeroll. I saw some good poker,(LOTS of bad), played fairly well myself, but sucked out early. Had a KILLER laugh at the jokers in the marathon though on the way home... It's a RACE people, not a SUNDAY JOG! If you take 5hrs to do a marathon, stay home, TRAIN MORE! RUN! There, I feel better... no more on tilt posting...(bitter about the suck out)
Getting back to the tournament, they could have used a few door prizes I think, that would have been cool, (instead of spending all kinds of bucks on leather jackets for themselves).

They were expecting 2000 people, at 11:00 am they had less than 800...
Informal poll time: what would yield a larger turnout:(A) Winner take all $10K (B) Winner $5K, with cash down to top 10%, or

  • I would think that they would get a better turn out if the money was split more. That was the one reason i did not go after all, i figure i had no chance to take the whole thing. So why drive all the way when you did not even know if you would get in. Even if i left early which is not a problem, if i went and waited for 2 hours i want a chance to play. what if they call a number 10 in front of mine then your out of luck, go home.
  • I played (forget my old username on here), got past the first round but in the second I came in 3rd at my table. Me and another guy had nice stacks (he had me covered though) and a 3rd guy was very short with about 2 big blinds. So, the hand I went out on, the short stack posted his big blind, the big stack limped on the button, I raised it 5X BB in the small blind with AKs to isolate the short stack, and to my surprise, the big blind folded (kinda figured he'd call anything), and the big stack put me all in for I dunno, 3 or 4 more big blinds? He had been pretty aggressive throughout and I suddenly had a bad feeling that the reason he limped on the button was he was slowplaying something huge, and I was right: ATo. I guess he thought I was putting a move on him, whereas I thought I was making it very obvious I was just gonna take out the short stack. Oops. Dude played quite well though (he also seemed to be a bit of a card rack that game) and took out the short stack a few hands later.

Okay anyhow, the structure: Starting with 25 big blinds sucks, and while I understand why they had to hurry things, I think once they realized 400 people showed up instead of 2000, and so the semifinal started at least 3 hours early, they could have even started us with 50 big blinds, you know?

Why didn't anyone show up? Cause it was super early on sunday morning and I think people assumed they wouldn't get into the 880 players. They should have said "first 880 people get into the game", cause who wants to drag themselves out of bed that early to come down and then not get a seat and go right home? Also the winner takes all thing is dumb, yes, there should have been some cash prizes for everyone at the FT, but really I think these guys just had $10,000 and wanted to be able to go "TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS GRAND PRIZE". I mean, having a 10k grand prize is only semi-exciting on a televised tourney, if they had said "7500 grand prize!" it would have been even sadder. But yeah, winner takes all suuuuuuuuuucks, it sucks bad.

Does anyone know who wound up winning?
  • OH, I forgot: When I was waiting for the semifinals, a group of people behind me were talking about how they planned to chop the prize if 2 of them got to the FT and were heads up. I'm sure they weren't taking it for granted that they would, but it still was pretty funny. I think they were rooting for a guy at my table too (tall guy, bright orange or yellow shirt or jacket I think? God my memory is bad tonight) and embarassing him, that was entertaining. This wasn't the group of people from this msg board that someone mentioned earlier was it?
  • I came 8th.  I played like an idiot on the final table tho because I knew my odds were getting lower each time I saw some1 take a pot.  Ive never really heard of a tourny this large before were you dont get any money for final spots.  I figured, who cares since 2nd is essentialy the same as 10th and so on.  So I started betting too hasty in hopes of lucking out.  Of course I raise basically all my chips with  pocket 5s when 2 other people then go all in.  I figure I had no chance anyway if I folded and left myself with $600 so I called only to see pocket kings and queens.  Then I hit my 5 on the flop and get excited but then notice a damn King as well.

I would of slow played it for 2nd or 3rd but I figured it was pointless since you dont win anything for those spots.

I also made an ass of myself on tv lol.  Where was all the damn cameras when I was taking people in the first 2 rounds?

Oh well.. I guess I shouldent expect much from a tourny that doesnt even have pin-hole cams on their final table at least.  I mean christ, my buddy has pin-hole cams on his table for fun home games.  I wonder what channel/time it will be aired on?  probably be at like midnight on the rogers chan :p

I want to see who won too because as soon as I was out I headed strait for work (which I was 4 hours late for :p)
  • Many people probably didn't go because of the stupid eligibility system of only letting 40% of the first 2,000 people play.  Some people only slept for a few hours and lined up more than two hours early.  As it turned out, only around 400 people showed up so everybody got to play.  The organizers should have publicized the event better, such as promoting it with the various free poker tours.

Eighty-eight people pre-qualified and were already playing by the time they opened the doors to the public after 8 AM.  The winner from each of the 11 tables advanced to the second round, while the ~77 losers got to play again in the public tournament.

Peter Gross, formerly of City TV, was among the people waiting to play.  While waiting, people lined up a for a free hat but some people ended up leaving them behind.  Around 9:30 AM, the first 220 people who had gotten a ballot got to choose their own table and seat.  Each table was packed with 11 players plus a dealer.

The dealer in our table was pretty but ignorant about poker.  With such a packed table, I was paranoid that the two players crowding me can see my cards so I took the minimum possible peek at my cards.  I thought that my hole cards matched, and after the flop, I thought I had a set so I went all in, probably the first in the public tournament to do so.  The chip leader had flopped a pair of Aces and called me.  When we turned up our cards, I discovered to my horror that I did not have pocket pairs after all! :fish: Luckily for me, I still managed to win the pot and I had doubled to 10,000!

Unfortunately, my A-Q, 7-7 and A-10 all lost heads-up and I was the fifth player eliminated from the table. :'(  So I had won 5,000 with a garbage non-pair, but couldn't win with Top 10 hands. :D

On my way home, I stopped by one of the free bar tournaments.  I later heard that two of the final 8 in the $10,000 tournament were players from the Pirana Poker Tour.
  • Oh weirdly, of the 88 online qualifiers, some didn't show up, so they just left the tables those people were assigned to short-handed, without evening it out, so there literally was a full table right beside a table that started with THREE people. The full table was pretty annoyed too.

The company had press releases that they would air on TSN. It's weird they didn't have card cameras, but I guess it's not a super $$$ operation (although it should be since the company who runs it is public, which generally implies they have lots of dough). The clips on their website of some previous tournament they filmed as a pilot do look very slick, and better than the canadian poker tour, whose broadcasts I thought were very very amateurish.
  • I think this sums it up:
    5000 starting chips.
    Blinds increase every 10 minutes.
    100/200
    200/400
    300/600
    400/800
    500/1000
    1000/2000
    2000/4000
    4000/8000

My second table was entertaining. Only half the players knew how to play and the dealer would not(didn't know how to?) keep the action moving. Players would take their time and ponder calls/bets, just like they see the guys on TV do. :)

Very little time to play poker.
    For a free shot at $10k I can't complain.
For sure this is going to show worse than the degree game on TV.
  • I played and actually won the whole damn thing. I did chop when it got down to three of us. 5K 3K 2k...... VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE and a good day out. Now bring on the $100K tourney baby.
  • Wow. Nice job!
  • Well DonE!!!!

Good to see you there. Aggression always pays in a tournament like this.
  • Very nice Joe! Congrats.
  • Well done Joe.
  • CONGRATULATIONS ACIDJOE!

Might as well add my bust-out scenario:

Blinds are 400/800. No one out on my table yet (1st round).I have 4400 in chips after starting with 5000.

UTG limps, 3 others limp. LP goes all in for 700. I limp. Button folds. SB folds. BB checks. 7 players, one all in. Main pot is 5300. Side pot is 600. Flop comes down...
    :ah :10c :6s

Checked to me. I bet 1500. BB folds. UTG calls. Everyone else folds. Heads up. Side pot is 3600. Turn card...
    :7d

Now, BB bets out but only 500. "Perfect!" I think, "he's made his two pair with A-7." I raise all-in for 2100. BB goes in the tank and then calls 1600 more. Side pot is 7800 now.

    I show :ac :10h                  UTG has :7h :8c                       Original All-In Guy shows :ad :7c
                    88%                                                  10%                                                                          2%

LOVING THIS!!! I AM 88% TO WIN 13100 and be huge chip leader and take out 2 players at once. But, as my deity, Gamblor, smirks, sneers and then starts to chuckle, the river card appears like magic, materializing on the felt and sending me home...

    :9s

I am very happy I got to play. I am very happy I played well. I am very happy for AcidJoe. I hate being sucked out on.

Wow, congrats Joe, that is really well deserved. I was up at your tournament a few weeks ago in Bradford and really enjoyed myself. I was also there yesterday but sucked out fairly early... Jeff....
  • Very Sweet! Nice take Joe!

How many 1 table tournys did you win to get to the final table of 5 players, three?
Was the final table the same blind structure?
What time did the final table finish at?

I don't think the bank will ask any questions for $5k but if you want to play it safe just deposit the money two different days.
  • Way to go Joe ride the wave into this Saturday with West Side Poker and get the RING.

No 2 tables to get to the final table.  Won my first table of 11, semi's were 5 people per table with 10 tables and all the winners made it to the final table

Was the final table the same blind structure?
Same structure but blinds went up every 15 minutes instead of 10.
What time did the final table finish at?

I have no clue.  I don't wear a watch and what time it wasn't that important (unless it's the blinds clock)

The bank did because the payout was all in 10's (yes 10's) bundled in $1000's wrapped in the bank of canada sticker.....
  • Who came in 2nd and 3rd? Just curious if the guy who won my 2nd table cashed or not, he played well. (I think his name was Ammy or something, young guy in a Honda jacket)
  • Hey we're all going to be gunning for you on Saturday at Westside Joe......

Brent how about a side wager for the player taking Joe out?  lol..
  • When is the 100k tourney anyways?
  • I was there, one of the 88 internet qualifiers. I was number 75, which put me at table 7 seat 5. Anybody else from here at my table?

I was at the the full table beside the table of 3 players. I ended up going heads up with a guy and we traded chips for a couple hands. Then on one of the hands that I was the short stack I went all in with K,10 and he called with K,Q. Flop, turn and river were all a bust.

It was a good experience I guess, but overall I think it was run very poorly. The tables should have been evened out when there were no shows. They should server refreshments to the players. The blinds were way to aggressive, if you play slow you'll get blinded out. Even if you go all the way to the final table, it is not a full day of poker and you really don't get a chance to gain a lot of experience and learn from big tourney play. At least the buy-in was cheap :D

What's with the DOCKS charging for parking?? !!!!! Since I was in the first game, I was there early. When I got back to my truck, there was a note on my truck to see the attendant on the way out to pay for the parking. yea, right, like I'm gonna do that.
