I know things tend to go in waves. But after 18 months without missing more than a game or two, I’ve cancelled 50% of games since August. Just seems like an odd trend

Ryan, After only playing a couple times at your game, I get the feel that hosting Friday with a portion of your player pool that enjoys the Tavistock tournaments which are also on Fridays is tough. I would also say, allowing players come in at 11-12 pm and split your game from 1 table to 2 short handed games is not something I would do.

I will say I've been legit trying to get out to Trigs' game...
I don't know that I have the "street cred" for playing mixed games, though I am fairly comfy playing them, within reason. I do think that some folks may not enjoy the idea of an open "dealer's choice" option where any bonkers game can be called. I know I'm not interested in playing some games with wild cards and such, but Omaha variants, stud variants etc I'm generally okay with. Also, some folks may not love the straddling aspect. I know I've heard some (admittedly fun) stories about straddles hitting dozens of dollars pre-flop, and that's a fun story, but as someone that rarely straddles (again, not that I much am bothered by it), as a host I have definitely had people asking on both sides of the coin about straddles and types of games.
If there was like a roster of games, with the understanding that some variation may be in play as well it may be a bit more inviting? (e.g.: Omaha may be 5 cards instead of 4, or Bomb pots may be 5 cards kinda gig). Also, this is a tough time of year to get people out to play... the game I host has filled up more often than not, but just a couple weekends ago we barely hit half full.
Good points Mark.
We need to stop telling the $32 straddle story. That was a one night thing from what I remember. (And people paid my straddle).
We sometimes get to a $2 or $4 straddle. But that’s it. And I almost never do it, so it ends before me . LOL.
Also wild cards are never in play in Mixed Games that Moose, Ryan, Trigs, KWMatt, MattR or myself host. I've been invited to exactly 1 game with wild cards that I haven't played.
Also Trigs always posts the games.
I find true “dealers choice” games are rare and often times if not everyone is comfy with the game called it is changed. I’ve also sat out an orbit when it’s a game I don’t like. Or I just fold (more than I usually do)
Just to clarify, I was not trash talking, just putting some things out that could help everyone trying to get mixed games going. I myself haven't been to any where there were wild cards, and I do appreciate when the games are listed (as they are here, and many others). I've also just sat out of games when there's a setup I don't much like, and it's usually completely acceptable to the others playing. I'm a fan of switching it up with games (though admittedly I have no issue just playing NLHE either). I was just suggesting some things that may help, and also, to those that never have played mixed games, try them out!

No wild card games at my place. I normally don't run dealer's choice. Usually just a three game rotation of PLO variants. Tomorrow is lazy Pineapple, PLO, and BigO only.
Straddles are really not that bad at all. You've just heard the few crazy stories. If there even is a straddle it's usually one or two max. There are definitely a few regulars in my game that never straddle and that's perfectly fine.
On a related note, I have it on good authority that Niagara finally has started the process to make plans to start thinking about possibly applying to get permission to run a 1-2 PLO game sometime in the near or distant future, weather permitting. 🤞

Yeah, I hope so too. If I had known it was going to be listed I’d have planned to be there. Once word gets around it will run. Just wish they had gone to $500 max tho.

Isn't the unwritten rule to just add extra chips on dealer changes?

This is the way to teach the children of doing things the right way.
The PLO 1/3 ran today as the tournament hit the cash bubble. Laurie and I put ourselves to start the list, and then cajoled folks into joining too.
When it did open I was on a 1/3 nlhe table, and had just sat down maybe 2 orbits earlier, but had already gone up a few 100 bucks, felt like I was rat holing (bulk came from my 9Tdd flopped a straight and got two others all in, with AA and KK... that was fun.

Ya, that was a failed experiment
Split pot games are lower variance.
Two of the three games are split pot tomorrow!
And why did they quit poker? Tomato bread pizza.
But his chili is to die for... Oh wait, maybe.... ? Mike, Cory, you guys ok?

Let's not bring odd balls as a generalization.

Sorry everyone. Was really looking forward to playing this weekend.
😭
Hopefully next time we will get enough!
That sucks. Can I still come for chili? 😋
Please let this happen. I'd go way more often.
It never ran

Hopefully that was just because it's new. I might try to get out there next weekend.
