*Need some computer tech help PLEASE!!

Hey everyone,

So I am not very tech savy at all, so I really need some help and I am hoping this is an easy fix!

I have 2 monitors for my work computer system. This morning I turned on the computer and its all messed up. The left screen has now become the right screen, and the right screen has become the left screen. To go from left screen to right with the mouse I gotta scroll off the left screen and it comes from the right of the left screen. So I could simply move my monitors around for an easy fix, but now the left screen the resolution is off and its like when a computer is in safe mode! The other screen is perfectly fine. I have no idea what is going on.

Help?

  • I'm Assuming windows.

Right click on the desk top
    Personalize
    Left side panel - display
    Change display settings
Here you can configure monitor settings. Drag the one monitor to
The other side or configure how you like.
  • win 7 / win 8

right click desktop, click screen resolution:

now click on the monitor giving you trouble and under "resolution" find the one that says "reccommended" - which will most likely be 1920x1080.

Now for the placement, look at the little pics of monitors labelled 1 and 2 - this tells windows where your monitors are physically. Drag them to where they should be and click apply.

    win 10?

Same thing, but to get there right click and hit "display settings" and then "advanced display settings"
  • yeah UbetIfold beat me to it. EZ fix!
  • Now using the updated win. 10!

I did exactly that, and I switched them around, hit apply and took affect for iunno 10 seconds and then reverted back even after I click leave it as is. Plus even when I swapped it over, the screen resolution was still like in safe mode. Its annoying, im back to using one screen which greatly slows me down during my estimating etc.

    Thoughts now?
  • could be a bad video driver, never hurts to update it either way.

Right click your start button, hit device manager, click the little arrow next to "Display Adapters" and let me know what it says underneath - with that I can point you to the right driver update.
  • Intel(R) HD Graphics
  • Thank you. Once I finish putting my next estimate together I will download it and see what happens. Stay tuned.
  • np, may or may not work - but like I said never hurts to have the latest video driver.

If you can't get it going I can take a look at it tomorrow while I'm there if you want.
  • Well I downloaded everything, and went through a scan and low and behold it says there are no available drivers for my product or wtv. I am wondering if it could be caused due to the 2 monitors beind slightly different in size and older and newer. Is it possible upgrading the old monitor to a new one to match the other will fix the problem?

As for tomorrow, if we don't get to at least 9 players it will be a no go. Sitting at 7 confirmed and the (t) list is dropping. So it may not happen! Feel free to tell your buddies if they are interested.
  • Not to top it off, I just found out that my computer speakers are not working either. What in the world is going on? Any advice?

Want me to connect in remotely and have a look?
  • WOW..... not going to lie feeling a little freaked out now.... so the power in my house literally just went on and off, literally just enough to shut everything off for 2 seconds and then back on. Im thinking damnit, my computer reboots and low and behold everything is back to normal now, sounds working, screens are right side, resolution, settings etc. WTF could have caused this intermittent issue? Because now thanks to the power outage, its back to normal :s

    thoughts now?
  • Ghostbusters?
  • no kidding..... but seriously, what in the world?
  • I was thinking of going to a irunit4times game but his house is haunted so screw that. :P
  • Does anyone have any theories? I would like to try to protect my computer from this happening again if at all possible.
  • No idea what happened but download add block plus and stop downloading so much porn ;)
  • I have adblock already, and for the porn, I can neither confirm nor deny the validity of such a statement.
  • Sounds like you are running a desktop without a UPS. Go get one. The hydro service may have had a period of low voltage, which can affect computer power supplies and connected devices. The brief outage was a system “reclose” – a protection device identified a fault condition, opened a breaker, then closed back in after a short duration. Whatever was causing the low voltage (tree branch, failing insulator) probably completely failed and created a short circuit, which was cleared when the system reclosed and everything went back to normal. A UPS isn’t just for power outages – it maintains the voltage to your devices and most will actually warn you if the incoming voltage is lower than normal. If you notice this happening frequently, call your local hydro company and let them know.

I took a week-long power quality course several years ago and during the lab portion, we deliberately lowered the voltage to a bunch of desktops running different applications. There was a wide variety of things that went wrong (colour changes on the monitors, error codes, overheating) and it varied by manufacturer. The most robust systems were actually the older ones – two “antiques” (IBM ATs) that were unaffected until around 75 Volts (normal is 120V).

Or your problem could be aliens. Hard to tell. But definitely not ghosts.
  • JacNoK thank you very much for the reply. I will need to look into this then. Is this something costly and need some sort of wiring, or is it as simple as plugging the power cord into a box and the box into an outlet? Thank you for the help.

Hoping not ghosts, but cannot rule out yet!
  • Yes, a UPS is just a box you plug into the wall and then you plug your computer into the box. The box contains a battery, power conditioner, charger, etc. Some have replaceable batteries. I just replace the whole unit when it wears out. The higher end ones also have surge suppressors for your phone or cable line. APC is probably the most popular brand and is at most electronic stores, Staples, etc. They start around $70 but you'll probably want one big enough for your desktop and monitors, so look at the ratings (around 750 Watts or VA). Probably around $150 should do it.
  • Re UPS: If you have a laser printer, don't plug into the UPS. Over time it will significantly reduce the life of the unit.
