  • Hiw about you have a 1-1 NL max100$ or 200$ buy-in side game and you can count me in! :)
  • 20% WILL BE SUBTRACTED FROM THE POT TO COVER EXPENCES
77x$40 = $3080 is alot of expenses... whew!!! Must be paying off the local cops or something!!!
  • 77x$40 = $3080 is alot of expenses... whew!!! Must be paying off the local cops or something!!!

Actually, we are not paying off the local cops, just the venue and rentals, without sounding hostile, if you have a question, just ask, there is nothing to hide. And I guess until we have held about a dozen or more of these, I guess we will just have to keep justifying ourselves, until everyone is trustworthy of us.

Terry's total cost for this is $2855.00, which leaves $225.00 left over. If he does not hit full capacity there is a chance that it will cost him coin, but I'm sure the venue will make accomidations if there is not a full 77 players.

If you look at other threads and see the cost to play
    ie:$50 + $10, that works out to 17%.

    Rob.
  • Hey,

Just wanted to know what venue costs approx. $3000? Hotel Banquet Rooms for a full day don't even cost that much! I would say, roughly give or take maximum $1000 in Venue costs. Dealers $520 dollars thats 8 tables of 8 for 8.00/hour.

Sandwiches/Pop/Alchol overhead cost ($500) ..which you will make back..cuz' its not free.

...I suggest you look for a new venue that isn't charging you an arm or a leg. Not trying to be your financial manager or anything, but I think I speak for everyone else that looks at your initial cost and say you are getting Jipped Somewhere!

Actually it's $150 for table and dealer($1050), $15 per person($1155) and the 5% tipout for the dealers ($660), which equals $2865.00.

The bar is a cash bar, and the venue was $13 per person without food and beverages, so $154 to feed 77 players with pasta salads and sandwiches is pretty f**kin good.

Our last tournament went great, the only difference was the rebuy's payed for the costs, there are no rebuy's, so there is a 20% charge.

Most organizers charge 15-20%, or a membership fee. Check the others threads and posts.

If you don't agree with the way this PERTICULAR event is being organized, then don't play, I'm okay with that and I'm sure Terry is as well.

    Any other questions or problems?

    Rob.

Oops, my math was off, it should say "$2865.00"

That could work aswell, the $12 side table is forsure, the cash game may wind up being players preference, as they get eliminated from the tournament.
  • RiverRatJosh here, Tournament co ordinator/supplier. I thought I would chime in....

I run a company called "Holdem for Hire". I provide premium Holdem tables, dealers, equipment and tourney co ordination rigth down to the seating and defibrilator needed to get players out of the COMA's they suffer on the river. I wanted to answer some of the comments regarding what it cost to run a tournament these days. I run tournments of my own that some of you have been to I am sure. I have been in the game for 5 years now, so I am still new, but seasoned when it comes to this latest boom that poker has caused in the last few years. Last month I ran the famous WSOP satellite in Toronto at the trianing room and "Jeff Campbell" is going to the big dance. All that being said.....for you mathmeticians out there.

I have worked with Rqspence and Terry before, and will continue to assist as long as I am welcome. I can attest to the fact that they are truly involved for the pure love of the game. 20% is standard to rake off a public tourney. News Flash,.....reliable good dealers do not work for less than 100$ base salary for the night. Then they usually double up on that when they split tip action. Could you find cheaper ....yes......but a dealer can make a game. I know I use unique people with a broad spectrum of personalities. They actually have some!! I know you have all played at a table with a machine for a dealer who either has trouble speaking with people, or does not want to. Class costs money.

Tables...another story. If you don't happen to own 7 or 8, then you rent them with the dealers. You can go with an old tattered rental company table, or again you can touch it with class and rent premium custom made tables. Pay attention next time you play in a tourney and take notice of these few factors. I know establishments that own all the equipment and still charge 20% off the top of a tourney revenue.

As I mentioned before I have worked with Rob and Terry before and I charge 150$ per table/dealer combo for the entire event. No time limits, no catches........to run thier 77 player event they will have to pay 1000$ some odd dollars to cover table/dealer/ and equipment expenses. We still have not talked about a venue. Some people don't mind playing in a garage. I know I do. You need a nice banquet style hall with all of the trimmings. The organizers go to alot of trouble to please a crowd. It is work, time, and it can be fun. It is my firm belief that an organizer should be able to profit from his efforts. They put on a great show, and provide a nice place to get together and have some real fun............I offer "Mcdonalds playland" as a more affordable alternative.......;)

All in all Rob and Terry are great guys, and for those who are looking to hook up with a real good crowd, and get into the loop of events they plan to run, a poker enthusiast, or casual dreamer can not, and will not leave unsatisfied.........except with their run of cards of coarse ;)

I know these guys to be stand up guys who want to please as many people as possible if not all. If you have any questions, doubts, or just plain wan tto talk about it or thier event or my services, call me at 647-999-0089.

To answer the request for No limti side games with a 100 buy in.......that is in the plans I am sure. It is a beautifull game, and the crowd will be polled for what they prefer for side action.

And to speak to the 5% tip out to the dealers on top of the 100 $ each they make..........I applaud the effort to ensure that the workforce gets to feel real appriciated. I wish there were more like you out there. My people wil ensure thier gratitude by going that extra mile to make you event, and others to come that much richer in verve, personality, and proffesionalism.

I speak directly to DJALIKOOL when I say that my people (that have been weeded down to a very strong group of proffessionals) would be insulted at your 8$ an hour quote. My people make upwards of 200$ per event if it was a lively one. I am not interested in saving money there. For this unmatched service I will pay their premium. Regarding your alloof quote of 520$ for 8 dealers............As A Company I handle all aspects. If Rob and Terry had to source out people on thier own, individually, could you imagine how much bigger the pain in their ass would become in putting this event together for you to enjoy. I am pleased handle it for them in every aspect. If they want 8$ an hour dealers "Lets say", than I will provide it for them (though even I would have trouble bringing quality people out to Bolton for it). In which case Rob and Terry would still have the added expense of paying for my services in that respect. Thus there can be no such thing as an 8$/hour dealer. I would in essence ask for a premium as a broker and the 8$ turns into 10 or 12 or whatever.
In jest , I do hear that our world economy has opened doors to consumer goods and services over seas at a fraction of the cost though. I invite you to source out the slave labour you describe somewhere else. Johnny at "KFC" , makes 8 bucks an hour to drop fries, he is also 17 years old. We are dealing with grown adults that come out decked out in formal attire, that host, hustle, and deal the game we all love..................."would you like coleslaw with your combo sir?"

Please see the humour in my posting, and get excited about Rob and Terry's big event. They are onto something here and it is all fun......

Josh, just to let you know, you and your crew will be at all of our event's, as long as we can hold them.

I really appreciate that Josh, but the success of our event last month could not have gone as well as it did if you had not been so helpful. You really went out of your way that night to insure things went well. Thank you.

We are getting alot of response for the cash games on the side, they will happen, and it looks like we might have to poll the buyins to try to accomidate everyone.

Josh, Thank you again, and to everyone else, we are running a legit game, and it is a good time. But I am starting to realize that you can't please everybody all the time.

    Regards, Rob Spence

    P.S.

Terry's computer should be soon, when it is, this will be out of my hands. :D other than assisting him if need be.
  • 20% rake AND that inludes tipping the dealers? :D That sounds like a very resonable(when I say resonable I mean great) deal.
The casinos charge 20% and they are an hour away but usually only run tournies during the week.
It is nice to know what the rake is ahead of time so that no one goes in blind.
There are a lot of games around the city that charge more then 20%. I know of one coming up is 40% but includes booze and lots of "fish". Tough decision on whether to attend or not..

I myself do not care how much a person makes, they take the risk, do the work and should show a profit. If I think the rake is too high, then I go else where.

I hope to make this one, it sounds good! :)
  • esool wrote:

Thanks for the comments on the costs, we are trying to keep them to a minimum.

And we hope you make this one too,(with some friends :D ).

    Rob
  • It is official, I have just confirmed that newyorkpoker.com will be at our tournement handing out free stuff and prize's like shirts, hat's, deposit bonus's and other stuff. We are looking into other things to spice up the tournament and make it even more fun than it will be. When Terry or myself have more info, we will post it.

    Thanks Rob

I have to agree, played in a tourney last weekend where the rake was 30% for no drinks just sandiwiches. Then the dealers were paid out of prize pool, and were expecting tips.

Kinda sucks when the dealers had to be told how to deal, and you got 1.5 orbits for a 30 minute round.

BTW Esool are you going to share your fish pond?
  • esool wrote:
    20% rake...
    esool wrote:
    The casinos charge 20%...

    Careful with the terminology here.

What would you call the percentage rake* in a tournament that had a buy-in of $200 + $40?

If you'd say that the rake is 20% in this case, then the percentage rake in a tournament where "20% of the prize pool is deducted" turns out to be 25% by using the same calculation method.

There are two different conventions you can use to do these calculations. You can either state the rake as a percentage of the total money, or a percentage of the money which is "in play". In casual discussions, the latter is typically used. For example, people usually refer to a $10 + $1 tourney as having a "10% rake". The important thing is to compare apples to apples.

Of course, making statements like "X% of the prize pool is removed" is smart marketing. ;)

    ScottyZ

*Yes, I know that a tournament fee is not usually called "rake".
  • ScottyZ is right, just to carify things, we are not raking any hands, it is 20% of the total monies collected. If Terry and I can work stuff out that we are trying (very hard) too do, then we will lower the 20% to whatever it may be and announce it at the tourney.

And just for you sceptics out there, if Terry and or I manage to get the cost reduced, we WILL NOT hide that fact, and we will let everyone know, because we want this to be a regular thing and do not want to lose any players, or future players for that matter.

    Rob
  • I ask this not because I want to stir up trouble, but because I'm genuinely interested. Is River Rat's Company a legal venture?
  • I am not sure, that is something Josh would have to answer, but his people and services are excellent.

    Rob
  • One of the prizes that we are giving away will be

    .......(drumroll)........

A seat to the next London Tournament. :D  :D

Same as sweetjimmi, we will be giving it to the bubble person, although there is no date as of yet, that persons name, phone number and or email will be taken down and submitted to the London organizers, once there is a date set, that person will be notified of their free seat.

    Thanks, Rob

P.S. If you have not yet signed up, :D do so now :D , it's a good time to be had by all.
  • Just saw that there have been over 350 views of this thread. Only 7 from the forum have registered :'(, it would be nice if more forum guy's/gal's came out to the tourney). The last one was great, all the feed back was positive, and every one had a good time.

How can we intice more of you to come out?

    Rob
  • As of now, there are 30 registered players, we are waiting on a confirmation on Wed. and then Terry or I will post the seating, and update it as possible.

That game is this Saturday and I think I am going to pass on it. $75 + $50 freezeout. No dealers, 8/table 60ish players and lots of fish... Naw, I'll go to a smaller tourney instead and walk away with the same money if I win..
It is a "private" game but if you want in I'll see what I can do. It is in Wood'abridge.

It could be the buy-in is too steep for a lot of people here. Also the location might be a bit far for some. I don't think the lure of a free buy-in to the London tourney is helping :D Or maybe they prefer a low-frills,low-rake kind of tourney. To each his own.

Good luck. I hope it goes well for you!

  • I loved looking at the arguements over the tourney expenses. I also have run events and believe that all of them are overcharging because everyone is out to make a quick buck---don't deny it. The truth is we would all be better off if the organizers found venues that didn't charge and made their money from food and beverage sales---quit using dealers that are usually useless anyways except for a couple good dealers at the final tables and find someone who will supply equipment cheap so that everyone can play for a reasonable rate. The big plus side of this format is the RCMP, OPP and gaming commissions probably wont bother you either as they will see that noone is getting rich off the event.
  • The venue's are a piss off, everybody hear's "poker tourney", and they think they can make thousands of dollars in a night.

Our venue (the nappa lounge) is stickit to us, this will change, we have found another venue, not as nice, 6 min north of bolton, and alot cheaper. If the nappa lounge doesn't change after sunday, we are gone.

Greed, that is what it is all about, they don't have the balls to organize, so they take what they can.
