  • Satellites are already underway both online and here at the club BTW.
  • I'll try to qualify, but It's actually $3395 + $105 + $350, for a rake of 12%. This time, the following fine print is included at the bottom of the webpage: "A 3% staff gratuity will be withheld from the prize pool of each of these tournaments."

Will anybody be posting a comparison of the structures, satellites, tournament and cash game rake, etc. of the WSOP, WPT and CPT events at Montreal to help forumers decide which one(s) to travel to?

hey, be grateful it's not $14 a hand

I can think of no one better qualified than yourself
  • Ive always wanted to go to this playground poker place. sounds badass, a good price for a WPT too, hmmm..
  • just booked a studio apartment.... Montreal Festival here I come, never been to the playground, looking forward to it!!!
  • I can't find a way to win a satellite to the two WSOP-C and CPT Mega Stack series, :( so only WPT Montreal may have enough satellite options. Playground has a weird rake structure of 12% no matter how low or how high the buy-in is, i.e., the 12% rake that I will pay for the $110 events does not go down for those who buy-in for the $3,850 event. It's time to start planning for the once-in-a-lifetime WSOP/WPT/CPT/FPC Super Series that begins in September, so here are my tentative plans.

Plan A: Play any satellites organized by irunit4times, other forumers and poker rooms to win an entry, e.g., WPT Montreal ME. I will drive with my family on November 29.

    Plan B: If I don't win a WPT satellite, I'll drive with my family to a WSOP-C Ottawa/Lac-Leamy/Gatineau/Quebec ??? event on November 22-24 or 15-17.
  • If anyone was thinking about doing Playground, the Canadiens tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10am...in case you want to go to a Habs game at some point while you're out in Mtl

Do you happen to know of a better value than the ~$145/night at Holiday Inn Midtown Montreal (includes service charges, taxes and parking fee)? I know that Le Westin Montreal is a lot more expensive.

Does anybody know which Montreal hotels you can store your laptop in a safe? I expect to be in Montreal for the November 28 WPT 10 Seats Guaranteed Satellite.
  • The website for the Westin says that they provide a personal safe in each room - I am making enquiries to learn how large it is (and if it will fit a standard laptop).

The Holiday Inn site only suggests that they provide access to safety deposit boxes, presumably through the front desk. I'll make further enquiries into their facilities as well.

In terms of value hotels, the Holiday Inn is among the best deals you're going to get downtown. If you look on travel sites you'll see a few for less - like around $70 before taxes - but, knowing the city, these are either a) very small, old-fashioned hotels or b) real dumps.

Hotel pricing is a big mystery though - there are always deals around and it may be possible to get a very very nice hotel for the same price or just slightly more than the $99 (before taxes and other stuff) at the Holiday Inn.

Personally I think the best deal of all (if possible) would be to chop a room at the Westin with someone you know.
  • So I heard back from the Westin and their safes are probably not large enough for a laptop.

I have a feeling that this kind of thing isn't nearly the concern in Montreal as Barcelona, although I get the urge to not take any chances.

Just for my own usage I'm looking into portable safekeeping boxes I could travel with and lock using a standard bike lock.
  • Who in the forum is driving from the GTA to WPT Montreal? A friend who already won a WPT Montreal ME package wants me to go, so here are our tentative plans for ~November 27 ~ December 5:

November 27: Since I bought my car in the previous millenium and is almost as old as compuease, ;) we'll carpool in his newer car for the 5.5 hour drive from Mississauga.
    - We will both play in Event #8.

November 28: If I haven't won a ME seat from any rake-free or online satellites, then we'll both play Playground's re-entry satellites with 12% rake :( up to November 30.

I would like to play Events #12 and 13 on December 5 and 6, but probably won't have time.

My friend will book the hotel until December 5, but it's possible I may have to find another way home earlier, e.g., VIA Rail or Coach Canada bus. Except possibly for Snake's Poker Club, I haven't found any reasonably-raked cash game worth staying for in Quebec.

  • For anyone on twitter @playgroundpoker is giving away a free $1k seat just for a RT, guessing they'll be doing a random draw or something from all RTs... gl
  • Also did a write up a few weeks back that is posted now that other events have wrapped up.

Any idea on the numbers of the CPT Montreal Mega Stack? I'm guessing that there was no spillover effect from Playground's events as the VIP Poker Room has now shut down. :o

After the CPT had a series at Hard Rock Las Vegas poker room, the room closed down too. After Casino Rama had satellites to the M Resort in Las Vegas, M also closed its poker room after the event. What's up with all these poker room closures after a few Canadians have played in them?

where did you read they shut down?

Nevermind, Just saw their facebook page
  • Stay tuned as well for news about the Fall Classic MVP, which will be a 3rd belt for player of the festival. In the spring there were quite a few players who came out for 9 a bunch of events not just the main - 20 or so played over 9 events of the 12 on the schedule - and a few performed very well over several events. That will be recognized more this time.
  • Hey gang - just a little more info - we have posted detailed rules and structures for all events. I hope you like this - we're really trying to move the bar in terms of the amount of information all players have at their disposal to make decisions to travel and play in events. Posting structure sheets isn't that new, though (shockingly, to me) many rooms still don't make this information available at all.

There's also a FAQ which covers most of the information you'll need if you're travelling to the festival.

You can access all of this here: Montreal Poker | Playground Poker Club :: WPT Montreal 2013

Also - online ticket purchasing will be turned on later today or tomorrow.

+1. Can you please include the structure sheet for the WPT ME satellites such as the three $291+$9+$30 and the $97+$3+$10?

In for Event #8 fo shizzle.
  • OK these structures are identical to our "small freezeout" and "big freezeout" among regular daily tournaments except for the re-entry part and in the case of the smaller one, the starting stack size.

Any of the places on the reserve are exempt from the Quebec language rules that apply to Lac Leamy and Casino Montreal. They use regular decks.
  • Wow, you mean I can wear a crucifix and other religious symbols, stop training with R-D-V deck of cards, speak English only, and even be exempt from the Criminal Code of Canada to play poker at Kahnawake?! :D Sweet, I'm skipping WSOP-C Quebec and saving my money for the WPT Kahnawake tournaments and Snake's Poker Club cash games.

  • Blondefish, do you keep talking about Snakes cash games because of a promotion they ran once upon a time? Their rake is the same as PG as far as I know.
  • I would hope that the other Kahnawake poker rooms would learn from the VIP Poker Room closing that they need to offer better incentives to attract the > 1,500 players away from Playground after we are done with a tournament. I left a message with Stan about their cash games.

With only a $5 max rake at Woodbine 1/2-5/5 and only $14/hour session fee at Fallsview 2/5, it wouldn't make sense for us to play a cash game in Kahnawake where we could get raked as much in ONE HAND as we would in ~25 hands at Fallsview! :o If there are no cash games in Kahnawake with reasonable rake, I guess I'll just tag along with Mike to the nudie bars in Montreal! >:D Kingdom or Chez Parée?

  • Obviously it's up to you, but during festivals there's crazy action at the cash tables, and they will be full to bursting. A decent player can easily show a healthy profit playing cash at Playground.

One of our regular winning players moved to the Toronto area recently has been playing at Woodbine. Last time he was back for a visit he told me that the rake is worth it. And he's the most rake-averse guy I know.
  • not for long I think
  • I've probably played with that guy at Woodbine. When I see the many players in the GTA casinos wearing a Playground logo, I ask them about it; they all like playing tournaments at Playground, but they all agree that they wouldn't want to grind the cash games there in the long run with such a high rake. If I have time, I'll try out a cash game, but as soon as I see that the overly high rake is not beatable, I'll have to find something else to do.
Ya the rake is very high, but the food & drinks are "free!"
