Movie club -book club style but for movies

Hey all

So a lot of people around my various outings have book clubs, and although I like reading, I don't much wanna do that. I do however love movies, and was wondering if there would be other weirdos like me interested in such a thing?

I figure:

Pick a movie of majority interest (everyone think of a suggestion or two, vote)
Congregate at my place (big couch, great TV, downloaded movies)
Potluck food (nothing too heavy, popcorn / pizza maybe, but don't go nuts).
Schedule - up for debate, once a month? Bi-weekly?
Watch it and discuss afterwards

Anyways, anyone heard of something like this? Interested in it? Suggestions?

It probably wouldn't be hard to set up a skype thing or something, maybe watch it and video call for discussion.

    Confused?

I just mostly find that I see movies that are less heard of, or not popular. Doesn't mean they aren't good though. I'm not imagining us all getting together and watching "The Dark Knight Rises" or "Avengers", but not a lot of people have seen movies I really enjoyed, and would see as more appropriate for this kinda venue... things like

    Foreign Films
    Oldboy
    A Wednesday
    The Chaser

    Indie / cult movies
    Troll Hunter
    Memento
    Eraserhead

    Classics
    Cool Hand Luke
    Casablanca
    Bullit

    Documentaries
    King of Kong
    The Corporation
    Food INC.

Of course, fun ones / themed ones and even blockbusters aren't off the list - as I said, get suggestions and vote seems fair. But I get frustrated seeing some great movies, and nobody else has.

Personally been loving the parody porns that Vivid puts out... more hilarity than titillation though...

How can you be an expert if you never see the ending?

Would work if we lived in same city. I love 'film'
I actually thought of doing something like this years ago with the tv series Northern Exposure. It really takes a dedicated group though and i wish you luck.

Well, if the Skype thing works with Costanza there, maybe with you too?

We should PM movie picks that one another would recommend.

actually saw this one while i was in korea. definitely a fucked up movie but good. i'll never get over the octopus scene though.
    A Wednesday
    The Chaser

    Troll Hunter
    Memento
awesome movie although obviously not great replay value. definitely a cool idea for a plot though.
    Eraserhead

    Casablanca
    Bullit

    Documentaries
    King of Kong
    The Corporation
one of my favourite docs (i'm kind of hippy-ish though). i have the book too. also a good read.
    Food INC.
good one as well. makes me not want to eat anything ever again (eating is overrated anyway).

i'd be interested in this but probably couldn't make it out too often.
  • While IRL would be great, it only works for people in the area. For those of us abroad, could we not assign a movie to watch by a certain date, we all watch it and then return to the forums and discuss?

I've hinted at such an arrangement...

I would suggest skype calls though - I haven't a lot of skype experience, but I believe it is possible to use it to multi-way call?

  • Never used skype other than a 30 second test call with my wife, so I don't know. I can see how a multi way call with skype would work for most but still not for me, I would guess that the call would be at a time where I would still be at work being 3 hours behind Eastern time. Same reason I usually can't play the forum home games on stars.

But if it works for the majority, then I'll just bow out, no biggie.
  • Why not when someone suggests a movie, everyone watches it at their leisure. And then we all come discuss it on the forum?

DrTyore, I understand that you'd like to have some company once in a while. But when you bring it to the forum people from all over want to participate.
  • Well..

A: I wanted feedback about if people thought it was ridiculous and

    B: There's a shit tonne of KW'ers here.... kwsteve.....

    Mark
  • Ok....DrTyore...
  • :)

I may consider the "do for homework approach"... I'll follow up with peeps

And that's with the free version (video)? Not a cracked version?

According to the website max 10 for video and only with Premium which has a monthly charge..
  • Hey all who were interested...

Aiming to start this this month - last Thursday of the month (in this case, January 31st) will be the go-to. I'll be picking the movie this time around, so some basic rules / expectations.

A: If you're interested PM me with a cell # so it's easy to chit chat
    B: BYOB
C: Everyone bring some kinda snack, popcorn, pizza, whatever and we'll all share.
    D: Starts at 7:30p.m.
