    Hellmuth finished 4th.
  • At the airport heading back to Toronto, was a good trip overall. definitely recommended as a great poker vacation destination in the winter months. Day 3 I spent the morning downtown picking up a watch for my wife (got to keep her happy given I have been playing poker for four solid days) and got back to the poker room around 2:30. There were plenty of women players, mostly from Quebec, grind the cash games. Only eventful hand was when I bet shoved w K10d on a Ksdd flop. Chick flopped a set of 9s and I didn't improve. Started playing 5/10 around 7pm but zero cards and called an early night around 11pm. Day 3 - $700.

Day 4 I mainly grinded 5/10, on a super aggressive table. Chris Moneymaker joined our table for about an hour and a super aggressive BC player I had played against at the WSOP last June. One Russian player was very aggressive, and was on mini tilt after losing a big pot. He was raising almost every hand and proud to show his bluffs. He raises to $50 and I call with KsQc. There are two other callers, flop comes KJs6s and Russian bets $125 and I call and all other players fold. Turn is Qs, giving me top two with flush draw. He bets $500, and I shove with about $800. He looks upset that he commited so much and the river is a blank and I double up. Little later I pay him off with AQ on Q high board when he turns two pair with 45. My last hand against him I flop a set of 6s and double up again for a $1,200 on the day. Overall it was a good start to 2013 with a $3k profit playing cash (was actually up $2,200 on day 2) less the $1k tournament buyin.

Hope all other players enjoyed their stay at Atlantis. Looking forward to next year.
  • Top reasons Canadians should consider the PCA over the WSOP as a poker vacation destination:

#1 - no withholding tax on any tournament winnings! why pay 30% withholding tax, that you have to go to a lot of effort to maybe get back a portion, when you can avoid the issue by playing a tournament in tax-free Bahamas.

#2 - Nassau is under a three hour flight from the GTA and the same time zone as Ontario. Flight prices are very affordable and if you book ahead, you can typically get a direct flight out of Toronto at $129 (+tax) each way. Makes a huge difference when you want a quick trip to play some poker. Also, no night flights to deal with. Both Air Canada and Westjet offer direct daily flights.

#3 - Great winter escape! In the winter months, the weather in Bahamas is typically in the mid-20s. WSOP weather in June can be pretty hot. Also, in Bahamas you are typically a five minute walk to some of best beaches in the world.

#4 - the PCA is held at Atlantis which is one of the top resorts in the world. Vegas has some great hotels but Atlantis can hold its own.

Just note that poker is only available in the Bahamas during the PCA in January. During the rest of the year, it is not available at any casino in the Bahamas.
  • Thanks for the trip report. A very enjoyable read.
  • I've been reading on 2plus2 about the cluster#$@& that Pokerstars created with the Zoom Challenge. I haven't heard anything here and it occurred to me that this may effect players here who are unaware of the situation. If you played in this event you should check this out: Massive PokerStars Failure in the ZOOM Challenge During the PCA - Poker News - News, Views and Gossip

A Pokerstars rep has posted and players are looking for some type of compensation.

Mods-Sorry if its not cool to post a link to another forum...just trying to spread the word to players who may have played but are unaware of the situation.
  • Anyone going down to the PCA this year? I am looking at Jan. 9 -14th.

ya i think i might have to
  • What's the approximate total cost of an Atlantis Bahamas vacation? In other words, how much do I have to win at poker in order to cover all the costs of taking a vacation with my kid? The PCA Battleship event sounded cool. Is there a Survivor event for pkrfce9 and me?

  • i think rooms are about $300/night, but I believe that includes meals and waterpark passes for 2 ppl.

Depending on who you fly with, airfare is aboutr $400-$500 pp.

Too much added indirect rake for the Blondefish. Meals are separate at Atlantis unless you get a meal plan which is $$$. They give out meal vouchers when you are playing in the poker area. Meals are not that bad if you go off property. A little more than Canada but no 13% tax.

Winning a package is the way to go and upgrade to a suite! Iwould expect to pay around $1k per person if you stay off property.

I'm looking at renting a condo down the beach from Atlantis.
  • I stand corrected.

And yes, winning one IS the way to go. Stars also had an earlybird promo that ended last month, but it was a good deal as well. I think it was $2800 for 8 nights and an $1100 satellite entry.
  • I'm still trying to win back to back packages, last year didn't happen till December.

My first choice for 2014 is a Disneyworld resort vacation, which will cost my family ~$800 for 7 nights hotel + ~$500 for attraction tickets, so will 7 nights at Atlantis be more expensive?

Yes. Just book 9 -13 $368 total airfare on Air Canada. Got lucky, $99 each way plus tax. Price is over $500 now.
  • Why doesn't PCA have Battleship or Survivor events?
Too many Turbo events and the horrible unlimited re-entry format. :(

But you can hook up with the Royal Flush girls again at the big final bash on the 12th!
  • Maybe I'll get to do that at the big bash of WPT Montreal next week! >:D You & pkrfce9 should come along to see how I combine the "best of both worlds." But remember,

What happens in Kahnawake stays in Kahnawake.
