Seneca tips and questions

So gonna go down to Niagara Falls for a couple of day's and the plan is to go over to Seneca Casino, never been to Seneca so any advice if the restaurants are good there? Exchange rate good at the casino?

I am pretty excited to get away for a couple of day's so I am pumped to the max, it's been a few years, I think the last time was at the degree poker championships that I was on "holiday's".

Still a month or so away so still time for something to go wrong so lil nervous as well.

  • They got a great burger joint just up the hallway from the poker room, the name escapes me now. The buffet is pretty good and there is a Tim Hortons right next door to the poker room. Great poker room, love playing there.
  • Only been once. you can smoke there....

The poker room seemed quite loose so it's a fun game. they have short buy in tables so watch out for those if you aren't interested in short stacking and want 100BB to sit down with.

ask where the poker room is or it will be tough to find it just wandering unless you get lucky (or see signs I totally missed.)
  • No smoking in poker room. Both 100 & 200 max buyin. Don't forget your passport.
  • I've never been but a co-worker says the few times he has been, there was a lot of verbal fighting between players with it getting very close to physical on one occasion

That has to be new. No chance it's always been there.

It's new but not that new
  • When are you going? I have to go to Niagara over the next couple weekends annd I plan to hit Seneca. Will you be playing 1/2? If so, I would avoid the 100 max and stick to the 200 max.

Could get confusing with the metric conversion.

Probably, but Americans still use the Imperial system, and Canada is Metric. How many ounces in a kilometre?

Depends on how close to the Mexican or B.C. border you are.

If anyone wants to meet up with me at Seneca anytime, PM me.

    RAKE:

All games are 10% max $4 +1 (Bad beat jackpot at $20)
They take $3 on the flop and $1 at $40.

In small pots this rake is immense.

Thus if the pot is $20 they take $4 out. Plus they expect at tip.
So you can think of it as betting $10 to win $5-$8, if you play 1/2.

If you play 1/2 ($40-100max buyin) you'll find lots of people buyin for $40.

If you play a small tournament you lose 30% withholding tax to the government. This makes tournaments unplayable.

The highest game they usually spread is 2/5NL ($200-500max buyin)
The highest limit game they spread is 3/6 limit.
Most limit games are 2/4 limit... which considering the rake structure is unbeatable.

    FOOD:

Blues is the name of the good burger joint.
The portions are ridiculously huge (US sized).
    They comp you about .50/hr.
The good steakhouse is called, The Western Door. It's expensive but good.
    The Tim Hortons is substandard.
The buffet is $20-22, it's good.

PM me or ask any other questions.
  • So I guess 1/2 at Casino Niagara remains the better game?

    It depends,

If you want to drink free, Seneca is better.

If you want limit poker, Brantford is better.

If you want 5/10 and up, Fallsview is better.

If you want $6+1 rake, $2 on the flop $1 BBJ at 20, Niagara is better.
(Edit: I see they are having superfastturbo $35 tourneys again)

If you want $14/hand rake ... Playground will bend you over.
  • Out of curiosity, where do you play, Reef?

I prefer rake free home games.

In Hamilton I was playing a 5% max $3 underground game.

    I drink at Seneca.
    I play Limit at Brantford.
    I play 2/5NL, 5/10NL, 10/20NL, 10/25NL at Fallsview.
I've played 1/2NL at Niagara, (haven't been back since they raised the rake)

I haven't actually played at Playground.

I've just heard that the rake is $14/hand.

Can anyone confirm the exact rake structure/bad beat taken?

I've heard Snakes near Montreal lowered their rake to $5/hand max.
  • Exchange Rate:

Seneca used to buy back your American dollars at the same rate they bought them for. But they stopped doing that.

So no more vig free currency exchange.
  • When you cross the boarder to seneca do you have to claim how much $$$ you are bringing in?

    5K+ ??

    Yes

If you are bringing more than 10K you must declare it to *Canadian* customs before you get to the US.

I always declare how much I'm bringing. Supposedly they can seize your cash if you don't declare it.

One bad thing about going to Seneca is the border questioning.

    alright cool

also, do I state that I am only coming across to gamble?

seems like stating im bringing a few K and going to gamble might be frowned upon by the guards, no?

Yes, you will get disparaging looks and remarks from the guards.

They will ask you why you're going to Seneca and not Fallsview.

    You must lie.

    Don't say, "Dumb Americans!"

    Say, "Free beer!"
  • It is mandatory to declare 10K or more even if you are not asked in either direction.. However I would say you only get asked maybe 25% of the time. If you are less than 10K you do not need to volunteer the info..However do NOT lie... Oh and you need a valid passport.

Never been asked about going to Fallsview vs Seneca... I think the Americans are hoping we will leave our money there, not bring more back and most of the time their hope becomes reality...
  • Lot's of good info ITT, all I can do is cross my fingers and hold my breath this is still a go and everything goes alright now.

Seems like a pretty bankroll for Seneca lol. I have never had a problem with crossing to Seneca. Just be honest and tell them you dont want to wait 4 hours to play poker.
  • I have been going to seneca prolly once a month for the last 18 or so month on avg, havent been for a bit lately, none the less the 2/5 game usually quite beatable depending more whom you sit beside, a handful of nits, a handful of gamblers and regs.

As per the border I do tell them the truth "fallsview sucks and has a sitdown fee!" yes the rake is rough but thats if you play, I know full well how cold things can get when you sit to the right of a reg who raises 35% of the time and you keep looking at 83 off suit!

The tim hortons sucks ass! slowest in all the world, take it from someone who knows, the only reason I go is because the lemonade which comes to canada on monday!!

My bad I did not see this thread earlier.

And yes i declare, course I am under 2k when I go anyway....been searched only twice on the way home and its pretty quick actually, 5 minutes tops.
  • Thanks getem.

I am nervous now crossing the border after reading your guy's posts LOL

  • Nah I never have issues at the border, course if you come back ahead or whatever, just be honest keep your cash in your pockets, not your wallet LOL.

Lastly at 2/5 3 bets get pretty much absolutely NO RESPECT, you will be called by the raiser and who over calls 90% or more unless you ship!, then its no rake thats how I view it!....especially waking up with AA...that and probably one of the best, pre-flop chop is fine too, I did it trying to act like i was steaming and moved over someones $40 bet for $550, someone over moved in on me with AA as well, we chopped the 40 PFFT!
