  • Is this in a private home? Is it raked?
  • I call BS.

How can you have a $1500 prize pool with a $40 buy in and only 25 before the rebuys?
  • Hi there,

Thank you for your interest. Please find answers below:

It is a private home. The initial $40 goes directly in the pot. The rebuys/add-ons are $20 each, $5 of which goes to the house, $15 going to the pot.

The house is expecting about 25 players and expect most people to add-on. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,

    TheProfessor
  • $5 of which goes to the house,

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Do you think any female OPP officers will show up when they come to shut you down?
  • Are you always this nice to new posters?
  • Just curious, is it a private home?

If so, why the rake? Are you using poker tournaments as extra income?

People around here tend to get a little irate when offered raked tourney's. Plenty of forum members have regular tournaments just for the fun of having good games around town. They open up their homes and put quite a bit of work and effort into running professional quality games with quality chips/ tables/ tournament direction, and good groups of people to play poker with.

What exactly are you offering that would make a rake, likely in excess of $200 going to the house, acceptable?

Also, it's advisable to explain the structure of any home game, especially if you're a new poster. People need to know how many chips to start, how the blinds increase, how often the blinds increase, and your payout structure based on X amount of players.

    Hi Sstar,

Thank you for your post. I am a newb around these parts, love poker, and was trying to get a good game going into winter, so we don't have to travel too far in the snow. We agree on the opening of our home, and the opportunity of having good folks to play games with.

We've invested in three new sets of chips, and fresh decks of cards for the game. As well as some bevys (pop) and snacks. We have a core group of friends in the TO area that join us, but wanted to expand - again, to circumvent the drive to the local casino & to have a game locally.

We are going to cap at our costs. We apologize if we've created irate players in the area - it certainly wasn't our goal. Filling our Saturday with fun was definitely the intention.

Things we should let you know, based on the above:

    *20 min blinds
*payout 1:5 (25 ppl, 5 ppl get paid)
    *2500 starting chips (BB-SB: 25-25 start)
    *rebuys 2500
    *add on 5000

Again, I apologize if I made anyone upset, as a newb, I am bound to make some mistakes!:biggrin2:

Also, if you have any suggestions for me, I am open to criticism. I'm not trying to ruffle the feathers or step on anyone's toes. If this is not the correct forum for this post, please let me know!

Thank you again for your reply.

    Cheers,

  • Speaking as someone who hosts games, I think it's kinda unfair to make your players pay for the supplies and/or food/snacks you provide. All of us who host RAKE FREE home games have accepted the cost of starting up with the hassle of actually letting people into our home in the name of playing in a safe, (mostly) friendly, rake free environment. Even our cash games are rake free.

Taking any sort of rake makes your house a gaming house which is against the law. Maybe you didn't know what you're doing is illegal? If the OPP show up at your door, they won't believe you if you pleaded ignorance and you'll be in deep shit.

IMO, it's cheaper to pay for the supplies yourself and avoid the hassle of possibly being arrested :) If all monies go into the prize pool, you'll be safe from the law.
  • I'll ask before moose does . . . pix of chips?
  • What you can do and some here do, is have a donation jar (loonie or toonie) which is totally optional to cover costs of supplies. As soon as you make it mandatory it is technically illegal and although the likelyhood of police being involved for such a small game is small, all it takes is one complaint to cause an investigation. Trust me, it has happened before.
One other thing, don't get involved in selling liqour to raise funds, that's a definite no no...

Hopefully you get a good crowd and a great tournament, sometimes folks here are a little paranoid but it happens...
  • I'd consider playing if all buyins rebuys and addons go to the prize pool and you have an optional donation jar to cover your expenses.

    Jac
  • I agree with JacNoK
  • Yes, a game in Kitchener sounds great. Cannot make it this week but would in the future. I agree a donation pot is a better idea and makes it legal. I know cards are not cheap and they can get damaged when idiots bend them. :)
  • There is another forum game that I am committed to playing in this Saturday but would be interested in future tournies.

I will echo the above, I will only play a game that has no rake, but I also understand the costs associated with chips, tables, etc.. and would have no problem donating (voluntarily, of course) to help with said expenses.
  • Thank you everyone for your feedback. I am pleased to announce that we are taking your advice and switching this to a non-raked game for now and the future.

    Thanks again for the advice!

    Cheers,

    Blueman
  • Glad to hear you've made the changes. I'm interested in playing if you have room. PM me the address.

    Jac
  • Sent you the info, thanks again for your interest JacNoK. Hopefully you can make it and report back on how it went!
  • If there is a seat open, I'm in.

    Please, PM the details.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

Sorry for not responding. These are the standard 11.5 gram chips. I have two types (one with printed values royal flush set and others that are blank). They are not the higher end 'casino style' chips with little hash marks on the side, but they stack easy and we have 2000+ chips in total.

Please let me know if I answered your question adequately - I don't have any pictures of them.. Also, if you are interested in the plainer blank chip sets, we found them for $30 for 500 at XS Cargo on Victoria (Kitchener).

You'll have to forgive some on the forum, they are chip affecianados. Kind of like wine enthusiasts who can tell what part of the world wine comes from, just from the smell.

Personally, I could care less what chips are like, provided I have them all at the end of the evening :)

    Hey it's all good! :)

Maybe some of the forum members can tell me where I can get some 'casino grade' chips on the cheap.

You're in luck. One of the big dealers in Michigan always has a huge sale (via Chiptalk) on Black Friday.

There will be a thread here for interested parties, I'm sure.

Good luck with your tournament today. I look forward to a trip report from anyone who is attending.

  • Hey Thanks!

JacNoK is coming so I hope he says good things!
  • While I'm at it - is there anywhere in KW to buy Kem cards?

    Now you've done it . . . LOL

As for cards . . . do NOT buy Kems. They are over-priced for what you get. Go to Chiptalk, as advised earlier. There is a group buy going on through apachepokerchips for Carta Mundi Cellulose Acetate cards. Or you can try the following:

    www.caragails.com

    www.straightpokersupplies.com

The second one is a store in Scarborough, just off the 401. Smaller selection of cards, but he has Copags (great value) and free shipping for orders over $60.00 (iirc). good luck.
  • While I'm at it - is there anywhere in KW to buy Kem cards?

The newer generation of KEMs are really crappy for the price. Copags and Torcellos are the best value.
  • But Modianos are the best CARDS. hee hee hee.
  • Trip Report

I had a great time even though I didn't cash. M and J are a great host couple. Lots of food and drinks available. Nice house. They have cats so bring your allergy meds if needed. I think KW Steve and I were the only new people there, the rest seemed to know each other, but we felt welcomed. There were only 11 players total, a few cancelled at the last minute which is typical. We started 15 minutes late waiting for a few people to show up.

The location is fairly convenient, not too far from Fischer-Hallman and Highland. They have one oval poker table, a nice square dining table that seats 8, and a generic folding table. The chips are typical dice chips so no pics are necessary, but they work. The cards were basic Bicycles so some investment in some nicer cards would be nice. They did use 2 decks per table which kept the game moving pretty quick.

It was a rebuy/addon and most did at least one rebuy and one addon. The used an app on a smart phone for the tournament clock, and we ended up tweaking the blinds a bit as they were increasing pretty fast. Blinds were 20 minutes long with a 10 minute break every 3 levels.

We moved to one table when we got down to 9 and the top 4 paid. I went out in 6th but hung around to the end. KW Steve and Basil(?) chopped for first. We were done around 740pm. A cash game was starting but I didn't stay. I think Steve did so maybe he can comment on the quality of the cash game.

Overall a great experience and I plan to go back. They are planning a $50 freezeout on Dec 3. I would encourage other forum members to attend.
