Ok a cash game you sit in at the cash table you bought in for the max. 200.00. 1st hand 5 of he 9 players are all-in on your big blind 3 of them have you covered. You have AA and will be the 6th person in the pot.
Are you calling? I will even let you choose the hands to go against provided one hand is AK and any other pocket pair
Prophet :2h :2s
Ps buy in matters.
50.00 you call all day long.
100.00 calling
200.00 thinking about it
500.00 ....sweating
1000.00 you say why did I sit in this game
Of course I'm calling. Are you telling me AA has less than 17% equity against 5 random hands, especially those willing to get all-in preflop.
Comp is 100% right. If you're folding here in a cash game, you're not properly bankrolled for the level you're playing. When I travel to Macau to play 10/20 games with 3000 buy-ins, I always bring at least 24,000 with me and even with that I sometimes feel underrolled (though the terrible play down there makes up for it). I would make this call 100% of the time.
It's a fairly nonsensical question imo though, seeing as I've played cash games for 8+ years and never faced such a situation. I'm sure Comp has been playing a few years more than that. Ever faced 5 open all-in shoves preflop before your BB Jeff?
I sat at 6 tables last night and just waited until I got dealt one of the top 10 starting hands. Instead of raising before the flop when I was dealt one of these starting hands I just called. Once I saw the flop, if I had something good I bet, raised, re-raised. I did a little better, but still leaking. One hand I was dealt KK, flop was 345 rainbow and one player made a huge bet. I figured he was sitting on a pair and now had 3 of a kind so I folded. Was this the right move?
Sorry for the double post, but this is tight-passive, losing poker.
There is a lot to be said about playing small pots with small hands and big pots with big hands (and a one-pair overcard hand is a small to medium hand).
BUT, with AA or KK preflop, your goal should be to get at least 1/3 of your chips in the middle preflop and then put the rest in on most flops (an obvious exception is when you have KK on an A-high flop). It sounds like you're playing tournaments, so in general your effective stack is lower, so this should be a fairly easy goal to accomplish.

can't say I have ever heard of the '1/3' strategy. Might be difficult in a deep stack game to get a caller for 1/3 of your chips. If your playing in a 10/20 game and someone opens for $100 and you are on the button w 3k behind (AA), you re-raising to $1k if no other callers?

Correct me if I get this wrong. If I join a table with max buyin (say .01-.02 table with max buyin $5) and get dealt AA or KK, I should be betting at least $1.66 preflop, and then if the flop is rainbow junk with no overcards, go all in? Usually I only bet 3xBB on hands like that, and, I don't join with max buyin either. I'll give it all a try tonight and see what happens.
In a tournament, would you make the same play? Betting 1/3 of your stack preflop if you were dealt AA or KK, assuming everyone at the table is still pretty well even in chips??

There is no rule book on how to play AA. The max buy-in you should be in 0.01/0.02 is $2. You must be playing deepstack poker. In that case, I'm playing any junk hand just to bust you.
With that said, it would be IDEAL to put in 1/3 stack preflop. Even more ideal would be to put all your chips in, but that doesn't happen all the time. It doesn't come folded to you on the button and then you raise to $1. That is just crazy. Poker is situational. How are the other players at your table playing. I would think that they are calling stations at this limit. If they are then I would raise more than the standard 3xBB to like 5xBB and hope to get some action from one player. Is there a guy at the table that is hyper aggressive and you know that they will raise the pot. Use them as the initial bet and then 3-bet them. That would bring your bet to 9-15xBB. The bigger the bet you make it pre-flop, the less of a decision you will have to make on later streets and most of the money will get in by the turn.
don't think you will get any action online with this strategy. Not unless you run into KK or QQ (maybe even AK) and probably still unlikely with that size of raise.
There is no fast rules to NLH. Its not like writing a computer program with all these 'if than' statements. As noted, its situational.

No. Kingkao summed it up pretty well.
Ideally you want to get your whole stack in the middle. Failing that, your goal should be to get at least 1/3 of your stack in the middle preflop if you can. These are both fairly easy to do if you're short stacked or in a tournament setting.
However, in deepstacked cash games, this is obviously not an option.
Please reread my WA/WB post, explaining the most common situation, where you have a much smaller percentage of your stack in the middle preflop.

No. Again, this is ideally what you want to do, not your optimal betsize. Quite often in tournaments though, you'll find yourself with shorter effective stacks, so if you have 30BB left, someone in middle position opens for 2.5x, you pop it to 8-10x and then look to get the rest of your chips in on the flop.

This is how I played last night, when I was dealt AA or KK I was betting 1/3 my stack preflop. Most times everyone folded, which was great when I was in late position and a couple of people had called before me, then I got their bets as well. Couple times ended up all in pre flop. When it went to the flop and it looked good I pushed all in. Won some pot's, lost some pot's, but at least now i feel a little more in control of what's going on and what I should be doing. I bought in for $2 as kingkao had suggested and kept it topped up as I played.
I don't want to sound cocky or over confident, but I'm starting to get the feeling that if a person has a really strong knowledgeable game that playing at the micro's is comparable to shooting fish in a barrel? There are a few sharks in that barrel, but there's ton's of baitfish looking to get eaten..
lol, we've created a cash monster! Look out Ivey... Seriously though, listen to the advice here, it's good (mostly), practice, play within your bankroll, and profit...
