Poker books

Related to the "Poker Christmas" thread...

I asked for a Chapters gift card for Christmas. I ended up getting 6 of them in total from various family members. So now I have $180 to spend at Chapters.

I've put together a list of poker books that I'm thinking of getting. I may have to eliminate one from the list to stay under my total credit. Just wondering if anyone has any comments (good or bad) about any of these. I already have most of the basics, so if I haven't listed it, I either already have it or don't think I can apply it to my game at this time (or it's not available at Chapters/Indigo)

Super System - Doyle Brunson

Bad Beats and Lucky Draws: Poker Strategies, Winning Hands, And Stories From The Professional Poker Tour - Phil Hellmuth

Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker - Mike Caro

Poker Wisdom of a Champion - Doyle Brunson

Poker Tournament Strategies - Sylvester Suzuki

Winning 7 Card Stud - Ashley Adams

How to Win at Omaha High-Low Poker - Mike Cappelletti

Books I'm considering as well:

Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros (I like Phil, but from what I've heard this book doesn't really help much.. I'm more interested in his other storybook)

Sklansky's Theory Of Poker. ( have HPFAP, TPFAP already, otherwise this would be an automatic add )

Super System 2 ($50?)

Are there any fictional/tales books I should consider? I have Shut Up and Deal. I have a friend with Positively 5th Street that I can borrow from...

  • Out of your list my choices would be

Omaha high low-cappelletti i haven found a better book on omaha8/b

Theory of poker-sklansky a must own book

wisdom of a champion- brunson no stratagy or theory just good poker based stories

On the negative side bad beats and lucky draws is hardly worth paper training your dog on
im sure some people want to hear about how great hellmuth is but im not one of them
  • I am currently reading sklankys' holdem poker for advanced players, its a good read, also i have read super system and if you can get your hands on super systems 2 dont bother with one. 2 is way more up to date with current playing styles and the way the game is today.
  • anyone read mike caros book of tells ?? im just curious as to if it really helps anyone see the subtleties in play that might give even a slight edge .. which is the weakest point in my game ..unless someone has the obvious ( what the hell .. I RAISE! ) i cant seem to pick up too much on advanced players.

I have that book, I also bought a bunch of Skalansky's books. The book of tells isn't to bad, it could use some new pictures as the ones in the book are from the 70's at best. I found Skalansky's books, especially "Holdem Poker for Advanced Players" the most helpful.
  • Super System - Doyle Brunson

***Buy it to own it. Not because it will make you a better poker player although the NL section still has a lot to teach.

Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros (I like Phil, but from what I've heard this book
doesn't really help much.. I'm more interested in his other storybook)

***I like the book. But, it's pretty thin on content.

Sklansky's Theory Of Poker. ( have HPFAP, TPFAP already, otherwise this would be an automatic add )

***Buy this. It will teach you how to think about poker. An essential reference.

    Super System 2 ($50?)

***Is it out? I am looking forward to this book.

***Also... I am told that the Dan Harrington's new book is very good. The first book to explain some of the mare advance "pro" concepts.

I have no idea if the site is reputable, but they're the only one i found listing Dan Harrington's book
  • Two plus two's site has Harrington's book advertised as well.

If I had the choice I'd get Supersystem 2 before the old version, just based on how out of date some of the sections are in the original version. I wasn't sure if the new one was out yet, but it's definitely on my "must get" list.

I'm guessing you already have Ray Zee's "High Low Split Poker", but if you don't that book is half on Stud 8 and half on Omaha 8. I've only browsed through the Omaha 8 section but the Stud 8 section is really good (as are all the 2+2 books I've read so far) so I would think the Omaha 8 section is also worth reading.
  • I've read caro's and it was actually quite helpful for a few tells. I mean a few of them don't really help you too too much, for instance one of them is along the lines of "if a player stacks his chips sloppy, he is more likely a loose player". You should be able to figure that out just by his range of cards. However there are quite a few that I realized even I do subconciously and have proved helpful, and for $40 or whatever its worth picking up.
  • S/S II

    is it out yet?
  • Only if you play on Doyle's room. Otherwise Feb.
  • I got Harrington's book last week from Amazon.ca. Check back there frequently... they get them in chunks from different suppliers so it might be there one day, out of stock the next, and in stock again 2 days later.
  • I just finished Positively Fifth Street - really, really good read. I highly recommend it. I especially loved his takes on the many times he butt heads with TJ in the Big One - and of course, his hilarious take on Annie Duke.
  • I also need to mention that probably my favorite part of the book is when McManus gets his double-team lap-dance before leaving town...

As a married man - its a spot on recollection. I went to Vegas for my stag - and was treated to a serious 1 hour lapper from two stunning lady's - too bad I can't remember any of it because it was 3 a.m. and I was blotto'd. But I remember that I liked it...

McManus' take was sweet. After his incredible run - he topped it off in style, but stayed true to his lady (because all sane men know that getting a lap dance - is not cheating).

  • i called Chapters/indigo/coles/every book store in the GTA last night and they tell me SSII is supposedly coming out in feb .. so if anyone out there doesnt have access to a credit card like me ( damn u osap! ) u can buy it in advance and have it directly shipped to ur home at the same time it gets shipped to the store. :D
  • He basically calls her a bitch - and then makes fun of her because she told him that "all babies should be born at home" (Duke is 8 months pregnant at the 2000 WSOP - playing barefoot, with her feet up on chairs etc...)

Really - I think he is probably upset because as a journalist - she snubbed him when he wanted to ask her questions for his article. Also, he perceived that she gave him no respect for his poker skills - because she thought the magazine paid his entry into the Big One (which was false - he used a 4,000 advance to win a 1,000 buy-in satellite).

They also had a memorable run-in during a hand late in the tourney - where Duke pulled her usual primadonna styles and bitched about his play.

She definitely was not painted in a good light by the author - which isn't news to anyone who follows poker like we do.

remember the Seinfeld episode where George's dad goes at it with Elaine "You want a piece of me?" "You gottttt it!"

    TJ vs Duke

" FIGHT! "   go TJ go TJ go go go :D:D:D
  • TJ vs Duke

As I understood it, the "He" in
He basically calls her a bitch...

refers to James McManus, not TJ Cloutier, right?

Mcmanus thinks she a bitch, and Cloutier might you never know.

And ive never seen somebody cheer for a man of cloutier size to beat up a woman before
is this the new trend "poker celebrity boxing"

TJ used to be a linebacker right?

    Raymer vs Matusow
    Moneymaker vs Farha
    Negreanu vs Duke
Scharf vs Duke ( heheh  )

i'll pay to see that
  • Yeah TJ says nothing about Annie. TJ played tight end for the Montreal Alouettes.

McManus does say many times that Duke is a very talented player, and he was very interested in seeing a woman win the main event for the first time - as that was one of the angles for his piece. But as the event went on, and he realized that he stood an excellent chance to win - and Duke was clearly standing in his way - to hell with his article!

Also there is an excellent hand sequence between TJ and McManus - a few of them actually - but one in particular is really interesting, mainly because McManus had memorized everything TJ said in his book about No Limit - and then used it when facing the author in heads up situations many times. I won't get into it incase you guys want to read it fresh - but it's pretty amazing shit.

Also kind of ironic - since McManus mentions that guys like Doyle and TJ probably lost millions in pots over the years due to sharing their secrets in their books! Crazy!

    ROFL LOL
  • I was looking at different books but I think i'll wait for Super Systems 2. I almost bought a book by T.J. Cloutier but i think i'll wait for Super System 2.
  • I will sell Super System (Brunson), Internet Texas Hold'em (Hilger), Tournamnet Poker (McEvoy), Play Poker Like the Pros (Hellmuth), and Tournament Poker for Advanced Players (Sklansky) all together for $50.

I've read them all (and re-read them) and I'm basically done with them. They are all in mint except for SuperSystem (the cover is a little worn and some bent corners) but it's still in great shape.
  • Personally, I've never read an entire poker book from start to finish yet. It may be a good time to start, its SO cold outside here. -30C right now
  • Pussy! Here in Saskatoon, it's -52 with the wind.

Anyway.... I am off for a 10 KM run. Seriously. See my poker new year's resolution to know what I would do such a thing.

Oh yeah? I'm going to make sure no-one nearby has a Thermos^TM full of hot coffee, and then lick some playground equipment.

    ;)

Have "fun" (or whatever you're trying to have) on your run. I hope your brain thaws in time for WSOP 05. :)
