2009 Year In Review - 2010 Goals
I think its time for this thread to start for 2010. I dont remember posting in the 09 thread but I didnt really have poker related goals anyway.
Even though Ive been playing for about 4 years now - I never really educated myself to high level concepts or scenarios while playing. I kind of just played really nitty and turned small profits.
2009 Recap:
In January this year I binked the 30K on FTP and decided I was actually gonna learn how to play. I regged at Pokerpwnage and well:
Went on a pretty sick heater where I shipped the 30K twice more, the 20K, the Turbo Fiddy and the 15K. Overall it was a ~35K profit year (33mtt, 2cash). I studied shove ranges pretty intensely and basically just lurked the 2p2 HSMTT for hand discussions.
That said - I am not easily motivated. Probably the biggest motivator to succeeding was the creation of the OMG thread. Seeing guys like Ash and Jules being successful was the biggest motivator for me to keep it going. This is why I think being involved in the "poker" side of the CPF community is valuable. For those of you that contribute to this - thanks.
I played alot less live mainly because the experiences I have get less and less enjoyable every time. Overall I hate poker players - or at least how they talk at poker tables. Social games are the exception. Ching Hill is one of the highlights of my week (mainly because of all the eeeeeezy money).
2010 Goals:
1) Beat 2009 from an overall profit perspective (40K)
2) Finally get a 5 figure score
3) Final table a Sunday Major
4) Learn to play cash games. Im a complete cash game spaz.
5) Finally win a ching SET game
6) Tilt less - Enjoy more!

Congratulations on your year!!
However most of the discussion on this forum over the past year has been really great and people like yourself and others have added tremendously to the poker talent on this site.
Continued success and goodluck with your 2010 goals.
Have to dig up my 2009 goals, but I think I aimed for $100k profits. I got 2 weeks to make a shitload lol.
2010 Goals
$100k profit
Win a sunday major
Go deeper in the wsop me
Win a live tourney (never have yet)
Get back into cash games (Didn't play as much as previous years and results were not too great)
Just to add, since this time last year, you've also earned just shy of $3000 in Ching Hill regular games (not counting the current season)...not bad for a small weekly league.
Wish I knew what the turning point was for you that it started all coming together like it has for you. I guess I just don't play enough online or live nor study the game sufficiently to totally get it yet.
Good luck with all your 2010 goals...except number 5...I OWN that game
That's why you in my sig:).
One of my goals is to still have you as a coach;)
Wetts, your accomplishments this year are incredible. Yourself and the others who've commented in this thread are a good part of the reason I come to this site. I've always said if you want to do better at something, whatever that may be...associate with those who have excelled in your own/similar goals.
Multitable PLO online more often, I didn't really have the time over the last 1/2 of 2009
Transition from 4 tables 6max PLO to 6 tables
Transition to playing more online and less live poker
Try to get in 20h/week online
$40k profit divided between PLO online and NLH live
2010:
I want to play more regularly at Ching Hill, and improve my win rate there.
I want become a more accomplished player, and will begin to learn other games besides Hold 'Em.
I do not think I am going to worry about on-line play for 2010. Poker has always been a social thing for me, and I like it that way. On-line will be available, but I do not plan to do anything more than dabble there.
Oh, and I would like to add my congratulations to everyone elses Wetts. A remarkable year indeed. Hopefully your success continues to grow. It would be nice to point to someone on a TV Final table and say, "I played with him, and he was a luck-box then, too . . ." j/k
Ain't that the truth!
Wetts, thats a great looking graph. Congrats! Not only did I not hit my targets for 2009, I actually regressed. The year started out great, but the past 6 months have been rough. All in all, my total bankroll is down 50% from Jan 1.
My goals for 2010 are to:
1) Not to create a monetary goal for 2010
2) Maintain a 50/50 split between playing and studying
3) Become a Reg at 50NL cash games
4) Play at least one Sunday Major per month - it's so hard to be able to play these when you have young kids
1. Have my first 5 digit score
2. Final table one of the bigger Sunday tournaments
3. Work on my heads up game (cash)
4. Put in some serious volumn for MTTs (35~ tournaments weekly)
5. Satellite into the WSOP ME
6. Satellite into one other live tourney (EPT/Aussie Millions preferrably)
7. Work on my deepstack cash play
Let see...I guess goal #1 was accomplished by winning the satellites to WSOP ME..but real MTT wise nothing really accomplished. I wasn't able to put in consistent volumn online at all, but there were a few weeks here and there were I did achieve that goal. Other than that, I barely played any cash games this year and mainly stuck to MTTs and I guess getting a late start on the Sundays that I do the Sunday grind hurts too. (value-ing sports > spending entire Sunday in front of the computer contributes to this).
As I posted in my blog, my focus in 2010 will be primarily in satellite into major live tourneys and make a trip out of it. Being done school, I don't see myself becoming "pro" or just playing poker full time. Finding a job is still where I see myself in a couple of months or whenever I do find a job wi (unless I bink a live tourney for a huge score or something) so I still see poker as just a hobby where I am able to make a bit of extra money. So immediate goal is obviously try to win satellites into the WSOP ME again, and maybe a couple of other ones here and there. Probably keeping my focus in MTTs and maybe dive into some PLO as well
This lol, I learn a few things everytime I rail while you're deep in a tourney, and thanks to you and whoever else (probably actyper) who told me that pokerpwnage was a great mtt site.
Reposted from 2+2 lol:
In January of 2009 I had a $400 roll on Full Tilt and set the goal of having $8k by September 1st, starting at 25nl (at first I was thinking I'd mainly be playing cash games, this changed). After a couple small tourney scores, I focused more on mtts. October onward has been pretty bad but I think that's mainly bc of being busier with school, and also downswinging after taking a few shots in cash (down at least 4k from October onward).
Overall I'm finishing up 2009 with 30k (~17k from mtts!) profit, of which most has gone to paying off my student loan, although I did spew at least 1/3rd of it on other IRL expenses, which = not finished paying it off. So my online roll is pretty small but hopefully I'll grind it up again and have a good 2010.
2010 life/poker goals:
- Prioritize my time better in order to make room for important things besides poker (i.e. actually work out, focus more on school instead of always playing online, browsing here)
- Finish paying off my student loan
- Eat way less fast food.
- Try and set more aside time to studying the game.
- Try my best to play my A-game everytime I sit down for a session.
--> Stop tilting so often.
- Try and make more $ than this year even though from Jan to June I'll be busy with school:
--> Ship a 5-figure score....then a few more?
- Play an event at the WSOP this summer (hopefully through winning a satty)
Cash Garphs poasted for lewls (beat: stuck like 900 in past 2 days on FT):
Full Tilt:
JokerStars:
see bold=jokerstars hahahaha:)
That's why your in my sig too:)
Tell me more about the "Figured shit out here" point in your poker life....
How did you get to that point?
Any revelations?
Any particular thing you changed in your playing?
How did it feel to have a epiphany?
Wetts said they burned it off with liquid nitrogen, so it's all good.
gl Kathy, busto!
who the fuck is kathy?
When you make it to the age I am, it's considered a heater......
Update 2009:
Online MTT OPR profit: $10G's
Live profit: damnit....not tracked....2 good live MTT cash scores for me (10G between the 2), along with multiple small 4 fig scores. My local casino has me listed at $15G in tourney cashes in 2009.
Live Travel: BCPC (awesome experience, down about 1G from the experience). Vegas for 3 weeks, no good scores there, overall did worse than I thought possible (-about 4G)....got drunk numerous times though, so it's all gooooooooood.
Goals 2010:
1. Get into the current century and get PT3 or such
2. Track live play
3. Start using a bankroll (as of now, just play whatever, and deposit / withdraw whenever I see fit)
4. Play more NLHE online (2009 concentrated mostly on PLO MTT) to get my game back to a profitable level
5. Minimum one 5 figure score online, and one live
6. Overall profit of $40G
7. Play WSOP event(s), and spend 3+ weeks in Vegas again
8. Play one other major live tourney other than local (ie. EPT, WPT, LAPT)
9. Get shit......like when Wetts did
[X] Unlike last year, PLAY more instead of spending way too much time in poker forums.
Most of my free time in 2009 was spent PLAYING poker instead of just browsing/posting online.
[X] Win satellites to WPT NAPC, BCPC, any other Canadian event, EPT Scandinavia, and/or EPT Atlantis 2010.
Won satellite packages to the WSOP Main Event, CPT Championship Finals, World Poker Showdown Main Event at Dominican Republic, and Fallsview Poker Classic. Didn't win a package, but got a cash runner-up prize from the Aussie Millions and World Open V (later won by Phil "‘The Unabomber" Laak).
[ ] Cash in a Casino Employees Event at the WSOP, Binion's, etc. Avoid playing US tournaments due to 30% withholding rake.
The only US tournament I played was the WSOP ME in July that I had won, and there were no Casino Employees Event at that time.
[X] Win a seat regularly to the $1 million, $300,000 and other guaranteed online tournaments.
[ ] Upgrade to a bigger house by the end of the year closer to Fallsview.
Could probably afford to buy now, but will wait again for the housing bubble to finally burst.
[X] Achieve VIP status at an online site.
This meant that virtually all my poker play is spent grinding on one site and I don't have time to play live or other sites anymore. The VIP benefits were worth it, including a free suite upgrade in Las Vegas, private box at the U2 concert, iPod Touch, and cash bonuses.
[ ] Be one of the Top 50 in the CPT for sponsorship.
I cashed in at least seven CPT events in Ontario in the first half of 2009 and had a good chance of being the only player to make it to the top 50 without having to travel for the big 110+ player events outside Ontario, but when it became clear to me by September that any time I have for playing poker should be spent 100% online and 0% live, I gave up on this goal. Three friends in Ontario who spent a lot of money and time travelling to the big events in Western Canada made it to the top 50 with $60K - $122K in tournament winnings, so they won a sponsorship of free flight, hotel and invitation to the CPT Finals on January 16-17, where prizes include a $100,000 sponsorship contract just like last January at the Dominican Republic.
2010 Goals
- Make at least as much as 2009.
- Try to win satellite package(s) to the WSOP, APT and WPT (LA Poker Classic, Bay 101, Hollywood Poker Open, Bucharest, WPT World Championship or Grand Prix de Paris).
- Play more Omaha tournaments (after considering cash games, SNG, heads-up, 6-max, etc. as the next game to study).
- Have a positive ROI or at least a five-figure score in the Sunday Majors and other $150+ online MTTs.
- Later find BALANCE in my life, as I'm grinding a lot now on the expectation that the poker opportunity will die out at some point like all the other booms.
Cash games emphasize post flop play.
Im a shove monkey so I either win huge pots or lose huge pots.
Because cash players dont call down as light as MTT players I have to adjust so Im not the one stacking off with top pair all the time.
Fail Fail Better, but still a fail Getting better....+ ROI on Stars, still - on FTP
Fail Sitting at 10G....looking like a fail Fail, in Vegas for 2 weeks already, no WSOP events played....always next year Fail so far (still hoping) Fail
A few goals you can accomplish litterally in the next hour. Other's you can adjust and be mroe realistic (wsop at 10K BR? a little far fetched no? even if you got to 50K, should you really play a 1k tourny?)
You can litterally buy PT3 or HH RIGHT NOW! DO IT RIGHT NOW! STOP REAING AND DO IT!!!!!11111!
As for tracking your BR at live poker, I can send you an excel file my buddy made that makes it VERY easy. Just plug in what you went in with and what you came out. It'll track everything, give you a profit summary etc. It even factors in your expenses (ie ATM costs, food, bus fare/gas etc.). I tried to create a graph on it and had it for a while but its disappeared into the nether regions for some reason. So thats two goals you can complete today!
Yeah, PT3, tried downloading once, had problems (I have windows 7), and was too annoyed to try to figure out the problems.
As you may have sensed in my posts, I am the opposite of a bankroll nit. That being said, the goal was to play satty's to get into 'a' WSOP event (not neccessarily the main event)....but I failed in even playing a live satty, which should have been very simple for the time I was down there. I have no problem dropping 100 - 500 for a satty or 5, but I won't pony up 1.5K+ to play a tourney without satting in.
I actually did a spreadsheet already for live play, but my problem is consistantly updating it with the numbers (ie. do it for a couple weeks, then forget about it for a month).
But, yeah, most of my problems are from sheer laziness....I seem to have no problem putting in 20 hours on the weekend playing online, but I can't find 20 minutes to straighten everything else out.
Obviously I'm built for being a rec player, as I'd have to change this if I was doing it for a living.
P.S.: Feel free to send me your spreadsheet....I'll use if I like it better than mine.
ive failed all of these, f..m..l..
