Vegas Tournies?

I'm planning on a Vegas trip late Nov. and I'm wondering if those with experience can direct me to some of the better tournaments while I'm there. I'd like to play a few different tournaments in different venues. Not looking for anything over $300 buy-ins but want a good structure and to stay away from donkfests.

All help appreciated.

  • Well Venetian and Caesars are the 1st choices, maybe Planet Hollywood for their bounty tourney. I do know that the Venetian DSE is on in Nov. At the same time their 7pm ($120.?) should get pretty good crowds (>100)

  • Orleans has the best structure for low buyins, esp the Fri night 7 pm tourney. It is out of the way though, you will have to cab it or take the free shuttle from Bill's Gamblin' Hall. The poker room is incredible though. You have to see it.
  • Thanks for the web-site Jeff.

The Wynn $225+$25 looks like a great tourney. 20 000 starting stack and 30 min blinds. Lots of play there. Anyone have any experience there?

Also, do hotels comp for tourney play?

Never played the Wynn so don't know the field size but ask on the allvegas site. As for hotel comps for tournies, forget about it. Even cash game comps are miniscule, typically only about $1. per hr. Only pit games pay comps of any decent amount.
  • We all played the Binnions $125 tournament one night last November. Good structure, soft players. Wes and Jeff chopped HU. Good times.

I'm surprised Jeff didn't mention the $35 + $8 electronic table donkament at Excalibur. He pwned that bitch.

Haven't finalized anything yet but can get a crazy deal at Circus Circus.

    Any suggestions?

Circus Circus, lousy location... I do know Excalibur has some great prices, ie approx $30. per night, Sun-Thu. At the south end kiddie corner to MGM. Best cheap location is probably the IP. Not sure of current pricing there.
  • 3 Hotels I'd stay away from:

    Circus Circus
    Stratosphere
    Imperial Palace

They're all dumps. We loved Harrahs for it's location and price, although having 4 guys in the room did make it much cheaper. (And much stinkier) I think our rate was around $80 night. Good but not great.

$30/night at Excalibur is a crazy price. Easy walking distance to the fishbowls at MGM, NYNY.

Have you been to Vegas before Chris?
  • I didn't mind the IP (great location) but wouldn't take my wife/gf there. As for Excal, their morning (9am) donkaments were my morning coffee... lol.. like playing flipaments at the Royal.. lol... I got lucky a few times. Current Excal pricing..

You may be able to beat this on some of the discount sites by a buck or two.

Ugh, we also had a good package available at Luxor......guess I'll have to look deeper into that although I don't plan on spending much time in my room. Just need a place to lay my head for a few hours. Not going with my wife so there's no need to impress.

I have been there before but it was before the poker explosion (and just months before the implosion of the hotel we stayed at......can't remember the name). Looking forward to seeing how it's changed in the past 13 years.
  • don't listen to all the cheap bastards on this site; TI is a good price and great restaurants on the property. Also very close to the mall if you are bringing the spouse/girlfriend; if you want to be at the other end, Planet Hollywood is good. If you want to spend, Venetian is easy choice. If you want bed bugs, pick one of those three star dumps.

I like TI because its a nice hotel, good places to eat, across the street from the Venetian and good proximity from the mall. Really depends where you plan to play most days. MGM was a little dated for me.

    Likely Stardust?

Well neither IP nor Excalibur are 3 star dumps with bedbugs.. Circus Circus.. well no comment. However you will pay 2 1/2 - 3 times as much for TI or PH. as compared to Excal.
Now the decision is completely different if travelling with significant other.
  • HM - Am there the 8th-11th, am staying at Ballys.

    Book it.

    No, not that nice.

I think it was beside the MGM kind of across from NY NY which was brand spanking new at the time.

November? No can do. Too much local poker festivities around then....RCVII, Bristol Nov. 9.........

This will quite likely happen the second week of Dec. the way it's looking. Quite welcome to join me then.

My next guess then would be the Hacienda which was imploded in Dec, 1996 to make room for the Mandalay Bay at south end of strip south of NY NY.

Ding ding ding. Man I'm getting old.
  • code xstier gets you 25% off Monte Carlo in Dec, making rooms about $47, which is also the furthest south on the strip that I would stay.

If you want dirt cheap, here's Circus Circus at $27

U.S. Hotels and U.S. Lodging Deals & Specials
  • Hooters (2 min walk to MGM and NYNY) for $20 per night Sun-Thu, last 2 weeks of Nov. I stayed there last Nov, ok, clean, suitable for guys only looking for crash pad..
  • You know I had been pricing air+hotel. Maybe I have to take a closer look at booking separately.

Can get direct from Detroit for $269 right now. Hotel for <$50 a night would be ideal.

Bah. Air Canada website prices fluctuate daily. Def book separately.

I just booked AirCanada Return out of Toronto for $310C.
2 Hour longer with a connect in Denver.
    Direct Return.

2 Hours in Denver Airport > Driving to and from Detroit imo.

I'm only 1 hour more to Detroit than Toronto.....and that's with good traffic to TO....which I can't remember having for a long time.

    EDIT: Just checked AC.....$269>$371 IMO.

HA. Thats my GTA Centre of the Universe complex.

    I forgot where you lived. I agree 401-Windsor > 401-TO.
  • Plus the amount you save parking at DTW over YYZ covers your gas alone.
  • Myself and 3 buddies are leaving for Vegas on Saturday to play a ton of Poker and celebrate my 40th. We are staying at the IP for 6 nights.

I did a little research and here are a few tournies that have good structures in which you may be interested in checking out.

    Caesars $150 Daily at 7pm, 7500 Chips, 30min levels.
    MGM Grand $80 Daily @ 7pm, 3000 Chips, 20min levels.
    Venetian 12noon Daily, $130 + $15, 6000 Chips, 30min levels.
    Wynn Sun-Fri @ 12pm & 8pm, $200 + $25, 20,000 Chips
Harrah's has Deep Stack and Bounty Tournaments.
    PH has good tournaments.
TI Wed at 11am, $125, $50 to pool, $50 to bounty, 6000 chips, 30min levels....they also have the same tournament @ 7pm on Fri, Sat & Sun.
The Orleans also has good tournaments.

    Hope this helps.

I haven't participated much on this forum in the past year but I'll have an in-depth trip report when I get back. I'll try to post everything from meals to shopping and hopefully some interesting poker hands for discussion.

In that case, this is what westside8 and I aka "the cheap bastards on this site" ;) did last November:

    - Book the best-value flight separately, e.g., we parked and flew out from the US.
    - Book the best-value resort directly, e.g., Imperial Palace.
    - Used the $20 trick to upgrade from the IP Capri room to the Deluxe room.
    - Easily walked from IP to Caesars Palace, Venetian, Wynn, Bellagio, etc.
    - Invested that money we saved to play a lot in the poker rooms and win more money, e.g., Venetian (DSE and satellites) or Binion's.

The best-value tournaments are the deepstacks at Caesars Palace, Venetian, Hard Rock and Wynn. The rest are crapshoots and/or have unbeatable high rake. Avoid Mirage, which is as retarded as Seneca Casino in taxing you 30% even if your tournament cash is much less than $5,000. :rage:

Yes, IP is a three-star multi-million resort that is better than most hotels outside of Las Vegas. If I had a girlfriend to impress like compuease has, ;) then I would skip IP and pay a LOT more for a Monaco Suite in Monte Carlo, a Sky Villa at The Palms or the Penthouse suite of the Centurion Tower.

I can't imagine how bad your original room was before you upgraded to the "deluxe" room.

FYP.... other than this I mostly agree with blondefish.. cept there are smaller tournaments that are beatable and mentioned in earlier posts.
