Upgrading home game chips.

I'm thinking about upgrading my HG chips, but I have no idea where to start.

Where is the best place to get some locally?

I know clay is better than plastic, but which company?

Of course I'd like to get a good set, but not break the bank.

Any help would be appreciated. Moose, 800over I'm looking at you :)

  • Name your price per chip.
  • What kind of home game is it? Tourney? Cash? What stakes? How many players?
What kind of home game do you have?
Are you worried about security of counterfiting the chips?

My main advice is, "Don't replace your cheap chips with another slightly less cheap set, Buy something really good"

Even if you can't afford to replace the whole set, start by replacing the highest denominations of your cheap set with something good. Don't go out and buy a big set of slightly less cheap chips...

I have no idea, let's say .60-.75 per chip. Next time I'm over at your place, I'd like to have a really good look a your collection. I can decide from there.

But let me know when you are buying more chips, we might be able to split the shipping costs.

So far I've only hosted single table games, both a SnG and ring game.

I'm not spending a huge amount on chips, just something nicer than the plastic dice chips I've got.

    I like this idea.
  • I would get compression molded chips. Best bang for the buck without going to pure clay.

Desert Palms Compression Molded - Order Thread

    .32/chip

    Or

Dunes Compression Molded - Order Thread

    .39/chip

The Chiproom is also selling the casino chips in the last link below. You could put together a cash and tourney set from these or order cash set in one and a tourney set from the other. Note: the Dunes chips above are compression molded versions of what Buzzardd uses (injection molded). The compression molded chips have a much better feel and sound and are not as plasticy and slippery as the injection molded versions.

    More Compression molded chips:
I'm not sure if these are available but you can contact them and ask.
2nd PCR Group Buy Being Considered

Go to the last page to see pics of the chips. The group buy price was .35/chip but not sure if you can get that price.

This guy is in Kitchener and I know he would probably take $250 cdn for these:
380 Paulson Casino Aztar Cash / Tourney Poker Chip Set - eBay (item 110428872033 end time Aug-30-09 16:00:02 PDT)
You can get more from this guy but there can't be many left because he just took down his sale on chiptalk:
eBay Seller: thechiproomllc: Collectibles items on eBay.com=

These are the chips we played with on Fri night. I also have sample of the Desert Palms and the PCR compression molded chips.
  • Unless there's another Casino Aztar, it's in evansville IN not missouri. I've been there and done well playing dice. They didn't have a poker table set up but that might have changed my now.
  • The desert inn chips have no $1 or .5 cents left all sold out

Desert Palm, and I don't see where you got that info. I can put 100 $1 chips right in the shopping cart.

Are you placing another order or would you order on my behalf? I really like the Palms chips.

How many of each would you recommend for my 1 table games? I'm thinking:

    125- $25 greens
    125- $100 blacks
    50- $500 purples
    20- $5000 oranges
(I bought 50 $1000 yellows in Las Vegas last year.)

$102.40 + shipping. I think thats a pretty good deal. I think that set would work for both STTs and RGs.
  • Just join chiptalk, you can use cdnmoose as a referral if you like, even though it is meaningless. Use the link above and place the order. Be aware your $1000 chips will be injection molded and won't have the same feel as the compression molded. I'm not ordering any of these. Once you go over 133 chips the shipping jumps to a max $41.95 no matter how many ordered.

A one table sng should use a 12/12/x distribution, where x is the number of purples you need to create the starting stack, so 12/12/5 would give you a starting stack of 4000 and so on. However, don't forget colour ups. Since the shipping is fixed, you should order as many chips as you can afford, especially since the price will go up as soon as the Chip Room decides to end the special sale.

Don't you want .25, $1 and $5 chips for the ring games?

No, somebody I know always brings chips to cash games :D Seriously, I think I'll just use the tournament chips for ring games.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Those seem like good numbers.

Personally if I was building a set I'd start by adding some plaques and oversize (44mm) chips — even if I have to keep using the dice chips for the low denominations for a bit....

  • Listen to Moose you should, chiptalk you should join. (my best Yoda voice). Unless you want to turn out like Moose and Myself and buy 10x as many chips as you need you should take your time and spend a little more than your stated budget. At 60-75 cents a chip you can go up slightly and get some great used sets. The other thing is that if you spend closer to a dollar a chip you'll never lose as they'll probably always be worth what you paid. So if you don't like them you'll be able to sell them. the cheaper sets don't quite hold up in terms of price.

    Awesome find Moose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Real Palsons at 43 cents..

Absolutely no need to buy anything else....
  • I'm going to keep my options open for now I think.

I like the Desert Palms chip that TheChiproom.com has, but they only have 73 black $100s left. I was hoping for more. I'm not in love with the Dunes chip enough to order those.

I'd love to get Paulsons, but frankly spending $500 on a set for my home games is beyond my needs.

If anybody comes across a nice deal, but let me know.
