any fans of Norman Chad?

or does he get on everyone else's nerves too every time he opens his mouth?
Some commentators crack me up with their sayings such as Vince Van Patten but Chad needs to hire a writer man because the guy sounds like a complete idiot to me. Might be a swell person but as a colour commentator, he tanks.
I find poker almost unbearable to watch whenever he's behind the mic.

I agree with phil on this one. I think Norman Chad is the greatest.
  • Norman Chad is God . . .

Yeah, I said it. Any disagreement with this fact has to come from one of his many ex-wives. :D
  • Ditto, he is my favourite colour commentator.
  • Muddguts, I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. I think Norman Chad is entertaining to watch. But, I have to wonder if he'd be as successful if he was working with anybody else but Lon McEachern.

The two of them seem to feed off each other really well, and as a team, they're pretty tough to beat. Mike Sexton and Vince VanPatten have that same "click", if you will.
  • I'm a fan of Norman Chad - good point Shumkoolie - major symbiosis with Lon McEachern!
  • I formally renounce my disdain for Norman. I am on my 21st hour of 2009 WSOP coverage and he has managed to win me over somehow, ex wives jokes and all.
  • While he does tend to go to the ex-wife well for jokes fairly frequently, I enjoy his colour commentary. I find self-deprecating humour tends to work well in a game laden with large egos.
  • Norman Chad is the best... keeps it entertaining, but still keeps the focus on poker and the hand in play... has decent insight into the game.

This year, he seems to be using the "Rajin' Cajins" line quite a bit as well...
  • I hate him. He comes up with one comment per episode and repeats it endlessly until tears come to my eyes. I could really care less that he min cashed in one WSOP event or how many times he has been divorced. He predicts hands and announces what players should do and is SO WRONG SO MANY TIMES, he is clearly completely clueless.

    Someone please WHAMBOOZLE him.
  • You have been whamboozled by the genius that is Norman Chad, moose.

All that crap is done in a self-deprecating fashion, with an eye towards building a mystique around certain players. The viewer is supposed to think, "If an insider like Chad cannot figure these guys out, what chance does the average joe have?", thus creating the David vs. Goliath storyline that ESPN craves for it's ratings.

Lon and Norm should get lifetime contracts from ESPN, as they reel in the average viewer by the boatload. If they annoy a few die-hard poker nuts along the way, meh . . . you saying you AREN'T going to watch in November?
  • and he cheers for yours truly:)

    I never said he was perfect . . .
  • Norman Chad isn't nearly as bad of a commentator as Rob Black.

Stop it, Phil, before . . . too late.

    It moved.

    Who's that? Rod's brother?

    Jamie Campbell is the worst.
  • Landsberg is worse. A LOT worse.

    haha...oops. Nice pick up.

I'm actually a fan of Jamie Campbell. He adds very nice insight for the Jays. He's at his best with Pat Tabler.

Count me in too as a Jamie Campbell supporter. It may be naive of me but I am surprised there is someone that doesn't like him. For the life of me, I can't think of any faults he may have in calling games.

Back on topic, I was actually laughing out loud at Norman the other night. They showed a pot where 6 people were about to see the turn and he started calling out bingo numbers and wouldn't stop. B-11, N-44 etc...It was hilarious.

Maybe it's the way he fawns over the players, the way he overcalls the game - it's TV dude, we can see what is happening, the # of brutal mistakes he makes - like getting the players names wrong and even getting the opponents wrong.

I'll give you fact that he gets players names wrong, very true. I'm still a fan of his style, and his knowledge of the Jays. Agree to disagree?

Most TV broadcasters overcall the game. I know it's brutal. This is why I can't watch any game (baseball or football) on Fox when Joe Buck is around.

I think the best thing to do is mute the volume on the TV, and turn on the radio broadcast. Jerry Howarth for life!
  • There have been several occasions over the years where the broadcasters have experimented with dead air during a broadcast, rather than the usual talking heads rambling . . . with varying degrees of popularity. TV seems to think it's okay, radio not so much.
  • I enjoy Norman Chad, he works very well with his straight-man Lon. I believe Norman went to the University of Maryland. Isn't that the home of the Rajin' Cajuns? :)

No way man, how could you forget the TERRAPINS!

The joke is any time he mentions a school, he thinks they're called the 'Rajin Cajuns'.
  • Vince Van Patten gives out huge douche chills every time he opens his mouth. Norman Chad is alright. For the average viewer the WSOP needs him. Most people would not sit there for hours watching this listening to nothing but strategy. But, in my opinion I think every poker show should have Gabe Kaplan.
  • I like Gabe Kaplan too.
