Heard about this the other day. Sorry to hear about the BS you've gone thru Josh. I was around during the Topflight thing and it was a shitty experience to say the least. Josh is a stand up guy for those that haven't met him and he has organized many charitable events for communities that needed them. Hopefully this issue gets resolved quickly but the unfortunate thing here is that some damage has already been done given that his name was published by an overzealous law enforcement agency. Good luck Josh.
Why did Joshs post get deleted? What happened to you? We have played together many times, this is Lauras boyfriend (the girl who interviewed with your dad/stepdad/can't remember for a mortgage professional job). PM me!
A Toronto police detective estimates that one of two gaming houses raided earlier this week earned at least $1.5 million per year for the operator.
"It's astronomical how much money they make," Det. Emilio DiPoce told ctvtoronto.ca on Friday. "Anybody who deals in drugs has got to have their head read, when the gambling is so easy for them."
Holy sheet, I used to play at the Nuttz 2-3 times a week. I remember when it was at the old location just west of Spadina. There were all these speed traps right on the corner there and I remember thinking how dangerous this was to play.
Everytime I read or hear about another police raid on yet another poker club or poker group it friggin steams me up!
Maybe if our high and mighty leaders and law enforcement personnell would spend more time and effort into stopping and arresting real criminals like; pedophiles, drug dealers and serial rapists, then maybe Just maybe we would have a far nicer and better world to live in!
I would imagine that enforcement directive originate with the AGCO. In spite of the paranoia, I do not think that casinos, or a place like the CNE make many complaints about clubs. I think it's just a case of the AGCO engaging in budgetary "rent-seeking". Still sucks, whatever the reasons.

AGCO?? I never heard of that before. Well whatever the reason, it's bullcrap and something needs to be done. But what can WE do?

Stands for Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario. They are the branch of government that deals with booze and gambling in this province. Don't forget, you're not in Kansas anymore . . .
Looks like the raids continued last night.....I was playing at a home game and the calls started coming in of York Region games getting raided. I don't know the specifics but supposedly there was a sweep last night....one club had a big guaranteed prize tourney and it got hit.
It was due to an undercover getting inside the club...lesson learned...referrals only

easier said than done; apparently this club WAS referral only. I'm waiting for the home games to start getting hit. Saturday night still seems to be bust free. Its our one night window of poker opportunity. Sunday and Friday nights have seen raids in the past.

I can tell you first hand this is not a referral only game, not even close, more of a "whoever we can get in the door" type of game
pool hall... they had one table. Glad to hear that the investigation took over one year to complete. Sounds like the newer clubs should be fine for the next couple of months. Funny thing is, I was invited to this club on Monday and it gets raided on the Weds.
btw, do you think the 'found-ins' technically have a criminal record so this would come up on a criminal check if it was done by a prospective employer? This would seem to be the biggest concern for most people. Or is the fine more viewed as a traffic ticket from a criminal perspective?
Any charges criminally are potentially bad for employment. It hurts more if there is a conviction. These guys should be going to the courts with a lawyer and pleaing a first offence and ask to have the charges withdrawn on the basis that they will never be found in a gaming house again.
In the end they want the owners not players and they got what they wanted. Due to the fact they all 40 odd people are heading to court on the same day there will be some deal struck for the "found ins"
Its sorta like when you go fight a speeding ticket....they always reduce it as long as they get there $$$.....
Charges are nothing to worry about. It's the conviction that you have to worry about. If you get convicted "criminally" of anything, found in, over 0.08 etc it hampers your ability to travel and employment. If found not guilty or charges are withdrawn your fine.

is each charge heard separately for each person or are all those charged on that day brought before the judge at once? I would like to attend the Nuttz hearing on Dec 17th once I get the details of the time/place. Be interesting to watch.
"In an unrelated series of raids, the OPP task force arrested four people for keeping illegal video gaming machines at three Toronto businesses and a Maple home yesterday. The accused will appear in court in Newmarket on Dec. 3."

They are all brought up individually. But its easier to have them all on the same day as the crown will be presenting the same charges for each person to the Judge. As previously posted, a conviction is much worse (I sorta screwed up my legal terminology, sorry brain fart)
Like I said previously though hopefully their lawyer will negotiate with the crown before they goto trial so there is no conviction.
Well it is dependant on how far the Judge and crown want to take you. It's at their discretion and every situation is different.
They would not put up everyone all at once because there could be other people that have been caught before in other situations (maybe other clubs), have past records, etc...
The best thing for anyone who got caught up in that is to seek legal advice right away to ensure they know their options. Especially if you are working full time or looking to work for a living and not play for a living.

Josh, just go to the post in question, hit the 'edit' feature and delete the post as you see fit. You can do each post individually.
Basically enough said.
CTV Toronto- Police say money in poker houses 'astronomical' - CTV News, Shows and Sports -- Canadian Television
How did they get the number rake 1.5 million / year?
My guess:
2 tables * $3+1+1/ hand *40 hands / hour * 10 hours/day * 365 days /year?
don't think they ever had more than one cash table going on any night besides Weds. Rest of the week was pretty slow.

Who decides that police should be shutting down poker clubs?
*Anyone* reading this know the answer to this?
Who made the decision direct the police to enforce this law?

You need to hire a lawyer for basically a fine? I figured the judge would just sentence everyone at once to make life easy.
