The Nuttz Got Raided

The Nuttz got raided. 3 of my friends got charged as players. I was supposed to go that night but luckily school got in the way.

Is there no end to your brilliance?

    I hope not.

  • Wow! A bunch of people who played there won at least three $10,300 WPT seats and thousands of dollars worth of other satellite vouchers. One of the WPT TV finalists played there!

While most underground clubs don't have a good tournament/blind structure and/or rake too much of the players' buy-ins, the Nuttz had the best monthly tournament. People involved with clubs claim they never had and never will get raided, but I had argued with them that, just like on Wednesday, no club has immunity from thirty taxpayer-paid officers  storming their place for playing the evil game of skill called poker.

  • lucky for me, I was there last Weds but decided to play at my alternative Friday night club this week instead. From their website:

Welcome to this edition of The Nuttz & Boltz. Last night the OPP Gaming Enforcement Squad shut down our little slice of heaven. I've really enjoyed getting to know everyone and watching their poker skills develop. Our very own Jim The Fireman is currently in the final 6 at the WPT Fallsview right now. If you happen to be in Niagara, go cheer him on. Good luck Jim!

The relationships and friendships I've made has made this whole journey worthwhile. I'd like to thank everyone who have and continue to support us. You guys have made The Nuttz the best club in town. Good luck to everyone in all their future endeavours, and may you guys always be holding The Nuttz.

    Best wishes,
    HeadNutt

    do they face a fine?
  • This forum gets quoted in the news again:
Police: "Anybody who deals in drugs has got to have their head read, when the gambling is so easy for them."
After getting their heads examined, all the drug dealers will hand in their resignation and own a poker club instead. After the usual "five-month investigation," each of them will get stormed by 30 officers with laser-guided automatic weapons!
Police: "They don't realize how much gambling there is and all the crimes that go along with it."
What are all the crimes that go along with it?? The closest thing to a crime that I saw was pokerJAH folding A-A preflop! ;)
  • I wonder what time the cops showed up? Weds they always have a full 66 player tournament so they must have come in after a few tables had already busted out. I guess its back to organizing rake-free cash games and tournaments.

Not defending the police's actions but I seem to recall a Waterloo club getting raided last year that also had automatic weapons and cocaine on the premises...

what's the rake on russian roulette? I guess the coke is for the winner.

What club had weapons and cocaine?
  • What club had weapons and cocaine?

Let me dig up the info....

I think this is the club I was thinking of.... No weapons charges there but I'm pretty sure this is the one:

    http://www.pokerforum.ca/f32/another-kitchener-club-hit-13901/

    and/or I may be remembering:

TheStar.com | GTA | Seven charged in poker raids
  • I'm pretty sure none in Waterloo did...I challenge Zunni to back that up.

    I challenge !!!

    meh..

Fact is The link I provided talks about cocaine being seized, I may have remembered the weapons piece wrong (may have mixed it up with another club perhaps in the US)... Maybe I was thinking of a story from ages ago that took place in BC, or Toronto. Regardless, the link I provided shows a bust that had drugs at it's location which was my main point.
  • zunni74 wrote: »

I've missed this...where is the link?

And I'm pretty sure that the coke was on a player NOT in the club.

Since you are talking about forumers here, please get your facts straight.
  • If it was in a "player's" possession then, by definition, it was in the club. Semantics, I know, but factually correct, as far as the cops are concerned. It's just another excuse for the cops/government to make clubs out to be more sinister than they are.
  • 2 years to get too, 5 month investigation. Wow I should be a cop cuz I'd be in like flint. If poker is this lucrative we'd have a 100 table poker room at woodbine by now.

3rd post 2nd page.. Original note talks about 'drugs' other article contained within talks specifically about cocaine and marijuana..

If it's on a person the article didn't say.

If you can't be assed to look at the link here are the relevant pieces:

"Police seized gaming tables, chips, cards, other gambling equipment and some drugs, OPP said in a news release."

    and

"Police seized gaming tables, chips and cards as well as cocaine and marijuana from the rented unit at 119B King St., the OPP said."

from the Waterloo Record account of the incident.

I'm not talking about anyone specifically, I'm not implying that any forumer was involved, owner, operator, person holding, or person using.

    So get off my back.

I mention this example only to verify that there was a poker club bust where there were other 'illegal' elements involved.

Much like there is in Brantford, Rama, etc...
The drugs angle is just to get the public on side.
  • First you DID imply that.

Second you ARE talking about several specific forum members, that you didn't realize that they were forumers is irrelevant.

Third I will not be getting off the back of anyone who makes such a claim without PROVING it.

Fix your poorly worded post if you want me 'off your back' or deal with my showing the forum that it is complete nonsense
    those are your options.

  • Holy hell Josh. I have played with you in the past, and I for one can't wrap my head around the bullshit you just described. Knowing you the little I do, I can't imagine you trying to bs us here, so I'll take what you have written as the facts.

If even a fraction of what you've said is accurate, then all this is a publicity stunt between the cops and media, as well as trying to solicit sympathy from a public that will believe anything the cops say or do if its in print.

Hope your legal recourse will be such that you can come out of this pile of crap smelling like a rose, but I suspect you will merely get nothing but a shoulder shrug from the police and media when they find out they have nothing.

My sympathies to your plight. Wish I knew what I can do to help you out. You're a hell of a nice guy, and looks like you're going to have a struggle on your hands here.
  • I recognized some of the names, but when I saw the age for you, I assumed it was your grandfather! How do the police get the full names of people like you that weren't even there? Do you think they did surveillance on you, e.g., record the license plate of your car as you went to the club? Or was the undercover cop asking questions to find out the full names of those he thought were the keepers?
I just think it was funny that the cop interviewed blew the whole thing up to Million dollar operations......with all sorts of other stemming crimes....
Unfortunately, many people who read the articles now think that poker enthusiasts are evil millionaires dealing in drugs and automatic weapons. :bs:

    Shenanigans Kristy.

Blondefish asked: What crimes?!? . . . and Zunni provided an answer. He mentioned no names, merely posted links that have already been posted on this site previously.

You asked him to back that answer up with facts, and he did so, citing a relevant link. He also admitted the error re: weapons

The cited "facts" may or may not have been proven, as of this date, but to jump all over him for answering your challenge is not right. You would do better directing your antagonistic feelings towards the lap-dogs in the press who lap up this crap every time they are spoon-fed press releases from the cops who are trying to justify their budgets. I have already done so with the Star, and plan to keep on them about this one, because enough is enough.

Josh: Don't know you, but I hope everything turns out for the best. Good luck with the legal fight.
  • Josh,

If you are seriously going to have to defend yourself in court, do the smart thing and shut up. Thats the first thing a lawyer will tell you. All you can do is hurt yourself by saying anything with a potential pending investigation open on you.

QFT. You're paying the freight. Let him/her do their job.
  • I think I probably read it somewhere - probably here - but in any case, if these things can really bring in a million a year, why hasn't the OLG placed poker tables everywhere they can? Way to balloon dollar figures, exactly like how politicians like to expense everything possible from taxpayers dollars
  • Police are trying to inflate the bust to make it sound more urgent, a crime against society as a whole...guns and drugs found in an underground gambling club. Strong words indeed, but the fact is you can't even go to a Sunday Church service these days without someone in the congregation holding drugs and/or a gun. ESPECIALLY in the cities where these busts are happening.

Media only writes articles that PROFIT themselves. Inform the public? BULLSHIT...if they really wanted to inform the public they would start writing the stuff like only $240 seized, and maybe the police overreaction by charging people who aren't even there at the time of the raid. Absolute nonsence...like being charged with jaywalking as you were driving, because you were spotted on that corner once.

Good luck in your battle Josh. Just hope you lawyer sees it the way you do too.
  • Assuming that you are a moderator.....

    or anyone who is......

my first post explaining the night will suffice......heck delete that one too if you think it best. I got my messsage out anyways.

    Thanks
  • btw, the tournament at the Nuttz that night was a $40 freezeout; these players get all this hassle over $40.

Josh, hope things work out. I think we have played together a few times. Maybe some forum members should attend the hearings to show support? if you have details on when the hearings are taking place, please PM me. We could start up an SNG in the hallway.... rake free of course.

btw, the names of the players charged are listed on the toronto police website.
  • Josh, given how long I've known you, I wasn't sure if you were the 96 year old man listed. I knew the name was right. So you know where to play, hell so do I and jah and a few others. Does that mean if I point someone to a game I"m involved?

All I can say is I read your novels and believe it is a factual account (to lie about getting a call at home would certainly not favour you in court). All I can say is good luck, let me know the outcome. Having been to court as a found in it's horrible. To be there as a keeper has got to be worse.

I have never had anything stick to me in court and hope to keep it that way. The last time I was "found in" I was in the variety store next to the game and was arrested and charged. The judge almost broke out laughing at that one. I didn't find it as funny but the charges were dropped.

Good luck my friend and if you need someone to talk to e mail me.
