  • I think I might play Friday/Sunday too...
  • Wes - Let me know about Fri.

If youre coming from the GTA and dont want to drive let me know.

I have to come back for Friday night, and will head back for Sat.

I might head down from KW...but I might take you up on that offer and come back to TO first. Will have to figure out the plans for that weekend first and get back to you.
  • I'm thinking of going down to Seneca on Sunday for their $175 tourney. Never been before though, is this something you can reserve in advance with a credit card or is it first come first served? Not interested in driving down if it's sold out by the time I get there. Anyone with experience with Seneca's tourneys?
  • You cant pre-register @ Seneca.

I called and they are not at all worried about reaching capacity. My suggestion would be to be there by 915-930. Most of the players are registering last minute, so you might want to beat the rush.
  • After I play the $100 Casino Brantford tournament on Thursday, I am thinking of driving to
    <snip>
Fallsview where there are way more fish at 2/5+.
  • Buddy - I will be heading up early Friday morning from Brampton if youre interested.

I'm out for Friday, but I might still be in for Sunday.
  • I've been looking at the remaining tournaments for the year. GBH hasn't returned any of my messages, so I don't think I'll bother playing in their $540 (240+200+100) rebuy tournament with a Skill Level of only 2. Except for Casino Brantford's Thursday tournaments, there may be no more decent casino tournaments this year. :'(

    Wednesday $120: 16.7% rake, Patience Factor = 7, Skill Level = 4.
    Thursday $120 SNG: 16.7% rake, PF=4, SL=2.
    Friday $230: 13% rake, PF=11, SL=6.
Saturday $570: 15.8% rake higher than the $175 tournament! 8500 chips, SL=6.
Sunday $175: 14.3% rake, PF=11 & SL=6, but I'm playing in a rake-free game that day which is obviously much better.

I am about 70% for Friday, I'll PM you later and maybe we'll grab lunch.
  • I just called the poker room; there is no limit on seating as indicated on the website for the Friday tournament. They said this was posted to try and get advance ticket sales.

Buddy, I may play Friday if you need a drive. I will leave Toronto around 9:30-10am. I assume you can find a ride back ok? PM me if interested.
  • Anybody else playing tomorrow's tournament?
    Wednesday $120: 16.7% rake, Patience Factor = 7, Skill Level = 4.
  • I will be playing in the Friday tournament. Will be wearing the Richmond Hill Soccer Club cap if you want to say hi. Likely arrive around 10am and play a little 1/2 before the tournament gets started.
  • Is any forumer or anybody they know playing in Saturday's U$540 main event? The good news for me is that I won the satellite today for the U$540 seat and the voucher is transferable. The bad news is that Seneca screwed me after I won. I am hoping that somebody who is going to pay U$540 for Saturday anyway can buy my voucher; I can give them the strategies for this Skill Level 6 tournament, :-X a buffet voucher (or whatever is left in my player's card), and entries for Sunday's draws.

The last time somebody f*cked me up relating to poker, I was so mad and went to Fallsview Casino and promptly won a WPT seat on my first try. With Seneca, I don't even want to contribute the $90 rake to the casino on Saturday so I just want to do the U$540 transfer then I will never play at Seneca ever again. :rage: DO NOT PLAY ANY SATELLITE (or anything) AT SENECA!

Please PM me if you are playing on Saturday, or if anybody has ever complained through the National Indian Gaming Commission. I may post the details later after I have done the transfer. A friend has also gotten screwed by Seneca and the lawsuit has gone to court.

I plan on playing. Why don't you want you voucher? Are they transferable?

Can you be a little more specific? Was it a ruling in the cash game or did they try to withhold 30% of the satellite value? It would be good to know for us players planning to play in the $230 tournament tomorrow. btw, how much was the satellite?
  • My first thought was taxing the Sat. win as well.
  • I may try to get out for Sunday.....I had originally planned for Saturday but I am building a deck in the rain....woohooo.....

If anyone is going sunday let me know...heading out from Toronto
  • It doesn't look like anybody I know is playing on Saturday, so I may be forced to play my voucher. I'll be redeeming all my rewards as I will never play at Seneca again, so say hi and I may have an extra food coupon to give away. As soon as I'm done, I'll quickly go to Fallsview Casino, home sweet home casino.

  • So for anyone wondering - I now fully understand (kind of) what happened.

Lets begin with the tournament today.

    - Busto in Level 6 when I run QQ into a well played (imo) set of 5's.

I sit down to play in a $60 sat for Saturday's $540 event. Commence steamroll. Win. Profit. But no.....

TD: Come with me to the cage Sir.
    Me: OK.
    Cage: Drivers Licence please.
Me: I only have my passport.
    Cage: You are Canadian?
    Me: I hope so.
Cage: You have to fill out a Form 1042.
    Me: Wat.
Cage: And you have to pay $162 to get the voucher.
    Me: Wat.
    Cage: The taxies.
Me: What if I dont pay?
Cage: You forfeit the voucher to the second place finisher.
    Me: Wat?
Cage: You are better off just buying in.
Me: You do bad math. Why wouldn't I just sell it?
Cage: If you sell to a Canadian they have to pay tax too.
    Me: Wat?

Luckily one of the 5-10 cannons bought it off me for $520.

  • I was playing in the tournament today as well and a player sitting beside me was telling me a Canadian player was very upset about having to pay taxes on the satellite he won (could it be one of you?). Seems like a lot of Canadians are finding out about the taxes the hard way. Good thing (?) I never won any satellites there.
  • I guess they were talking about me. They only ran 4 sats. today, and I was the only non-american to win a voucher.

I was not really upset - just confused.

I have technically not yet "won" anything. I can see if you could opt out of the voucher for cash how a tax may be applied - but this makes no sense.
  • thats sick, i undrestand we have to pay tax if we win a main event. Why pay tax for wining a satellite, i mean satellite is like a winning a seat not really cash, anyways thats stupid. I played at seneca only once for a satellite and didnt won it so no im happy i didnt win it. lol.

Fallsviews is the place to go i guess.
  • Sounds to me like Senaca is taking a page out of the Telemarketer's Guide to Ripping People off.

Telemarketer; Congradulations Sir, you just won an all expense paid trip to the Dominican
Average Joe; Sure I did...what's the catch?
TM: no catch sir. Simply give me your credit card information and pay the taxes and you're off to the sunny south
    AJ ; thought so...good bye
  • I made it down to Seneca around 10:45 Friday and checked my progress on the 1/2 list (as I phone ahead). While I was waiting, I got my voucher for the $230 tournament and found out that only 18 players had signed up. Was expecting a lot more. It took about 15 minutes to get on a new table. I played for about an hour, didn't really get any cards and was down about $80.

On to the tournament. For a $205 + $25 tourney, the structure was really decent w the 30 minute blinds. It started right on time and they were very strict w the breaks, etc. There ended up being 80 players for a total prize pool of $16,000. First paid $5995.

I managed to make it to the final two tables and when the blinds were 800/1600 w 200 antes, I pushed my $16k on a flop w second pair and ran into the other caller w the top pair. Didn't improve and my tournament was over in 18 place. Eventhough I didn't make the money, I was happy w my overall play. And it was a good group of players.

Back to the cash games and I put my name on the $100 max and $200 max and get stuck back at a $100 table. I lose another $85 chasing opened enders, etc. and finally get moved to the $200 max which I like a lot better (and do better for some reason). I grind back my cash game loss and tournament buy-in in about three hours and end the day down $8 US with basically a free tourney.

Although Blondefish has some issues w Seneca, I still have to say they run a decent tournament and it seems to be very well run. Good luck to those playing in the $500 tournament today. I think they are expecting about 100 players for Saturday since it is the weekend. They were running the $500 satellites all day w lots of interest.

Future Satellite Idea - I spoke to the person at Seneca (by phone) about the 'personal poker party' at Seneca. Basically you can run your own SNG for any entry fee you like. She said there had only been two in the past and the buy in range was 60 & 90 each. The sweet thing about running your own SNG is that the rake is fixed at 4% max. So next time a bunch of forum members are playing in one of the Seneca tournaments, instead of wasting our money playing their satellites with 15%+ rake, we can just organize our own.

The only catch, not sure if they will withhold the 30% as we are all Canadians which would make the total rake effectively 34%. I will find out if the 30% withholding will apply to a private tournament. Sounds like, depending on the buyin, the format/structure will actually be better than the satellites anyways. Food for thought.

I guess if you have a good chip lead in the sat, you could make a deal with the second player player to sell it to them for cash and that way you avoid the tax issue all together.
  • A family member previoulsy won 2x2000 prize board at a local US casino establishment. The casino withheld the "required" 30% tax (or $1200 total) on gambling winnings. However, by virtue of the US-Cda tax treaty and being a non-resident of the US, you are able to file for a refund and claim back the entire withholdings taxes.

The US-Cda Tax treaty allows residents of Canada to apply for their TIN (Tax Identification Number) and file 1040NR form in order to claim back all their withholding taxes. Individuals may choose to apply themselves or simply enlist the help of a boutique firm for a nominal fee to file the return on your behalf.

Do you have any first hand knowledge of this or is it just something you have read? This has been discussed a number of times before but I have yet to see a definitive answer and cost. We all know about the recovery outfits like these...
Casino Tax Refund | Casino Winnings | Gambling Tax Refund

casino tax refund - casino tax rebate - gambling tax refund - casino winnings tax - IRS 30% withholding tax US Casinos

    US Tax Recovery

Like can we get an ITTN number ahead of time, carry it with us and stop the casinos from withholding?

I think the TIN is like our SIN and this will not stop them from withholding. Especially at Seneca where they are likely fearful they will have to remit on your behalf if they don't withhold.
