Toronto Raids Games

TorontoSun.com - Toronto And GTA - 4 alleged gaming dens shut in raids

I don't agree with some of the information in this article, like the amount of money generated by a single poker table, or that loan sharks haunt nearby. I think the police are trying to use the media to sensationalize the potential. And I see they are still getting tipped by spouses.

Doesn't say which clubs were hit though.

  • LOL at the $$$ given. $23,000.00 in gear, and $12,000.00 in cash, OVER FOUR CLUBS. Must have been a slow night across the board. The one local club I go to has had to cut back to 4 days a week due to lack of traffic. Typical nanny state nonsense. Dalton's not getting his cut, so we must step in. It's for the children . . . but don't forget, if we closed down your club, you can always go to the CNE for your fix. We'll even give you free admisiion, and free parking, too.

    What a load of BS

a single (open...) table at fallsview generates more in a year. so, as long as the club is open 7 days per week, a table can generate that much. i can think of a couple of clubs that could have done that at some point, maybe not now, though.

and yes, there are loan sharks.

    jimmy, which clubs got hit?
  • its been a while since the last raids; I guess they are gearing up for WPT in the fall. Still waiting to see a weekend bust (Sat or Sun).

Here are the addresses and names of those charged:

Haven't been to any of these clubs; seems the 'major' clubs have no problems and have been open for years. I would expect more busts in the coming weeks. Anyone for Fallsview on Friday?
  • Gramps! "Samuel Joseph Shirose, 77"

$400k a night in rake, fkn cops
  • Naah, I'm sticking with my local games. I almost wish my local club would get hit while I'm there. I agree with, I think it might have been Oscar Wilde, "The only way to get a bad law repealed is to strictly enforce it."
No to suggest I would win the initial case, but just to get the snowball rolling . . . and if everyone involved, in every case, would follow suit, the backlog would get huge.

    Aaaaaaaaah, if only . . .

I think what really toasts my buns is the seeming sameness of these articles from one raid cluster to the next. It's like they raid the places, and then hand out the flyers to the obedient/lazy press to publish. Like they have a "form article" ready to go. I can hear the conversation now:
"Hey Bob, how many clubs tonight?"
    "Four, Steve."
"Wow, according to the formula, that means $1.6 million in illegal monies, right?"
"Nope, you have to multiply by 500k now, Steve. Didn't you get the memo?"
"Ooops, I forgot. How much did we actually take?"
"About $15k. Doesn't matter though, no one reads that far down anyway."

    And so it goes.
  • Best line from the articles

"The reason why they go there is it's local," DiPoce said.

So basically if there were legal local casinos then there would be no need to have illegal games.

Prohibition of alcohol didn't work in the US in the 30's what makes them think it will work for Poker today?

you realize they are referring to the rake over the course of a year, right? not a particularly well-written article in the star. yes, they are lazy and looking for something sensational to write.
  • The CP24 article has the cop report listing all those charged in the raids....scary thing is I used to play in some of those places.....

CityNews: Alleged Gaming-House Busts Result In Dozens Of Charges
  • This will only get worse once the Woodbine Live project opens up . . .

    F*** the Police

F*ck the media too, the ones that make it look like a bad thing.

We really need a representative of the poker community to point out things like that to the media as a counterpoint to these stories, which would hopefully sway public sentiment to outrage about misplaced police resources.
  • You know, HM, thats a pretty good idea. Back in the day, I used to harass the Sun Media chain every time they referred to street racing with the word "drag". Others did it too. Took a while, but now almost no one uses "drag-racing" when referring to the street morons. I think I need to sharpen my pencil.

Let me know what you are doing when you start doing it and I'll contribute.
  • Wow and I was gonna post to see what everyone thought the over/under would be on when the raids would start.

    I had thought mid-August....guess I was wrong.
  • Whenever these clubs get raided people are always bashing the Government for a "nanny state" or something similar. Yelling at the cops for doing their jobs or bringing up an related crime and ask why they can't arrest those people. There are posts that treat the club owners as victims and the police as horrible Storm Troopers led to war by Darth Vader.

    1) Running a club is illegal. We all know it. The club owners know it. Don't whine about it if you get caught.
    2) The club owners are not running a charity or doing this as a service to a hard done society. They profit it from it and when they don't profit they close down.
    3) The profits are not taxed. Another illegal act.
    4) There are options available to the local poker player. BCC and Niagara Falls are not that far away. Rama is close as well.
    5) You can play non-raked gamed at home.
    6) If you disagree with the law, then fight the law at the legislative level. Don't moan about the cops enforcing the law due to complaints.

I have played in illegal clubs. If I got caught I would accept it and move on. I know what I was doing was wrong. Sure, I may disagree with the law but that isn't the fault of the people paid to enforce it.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. Anybody who drove a modified car was labeled a street racer, and racing became the scapegoat for any traffic accident out there.

I do have a contact at Sun who is trying to write about the "non dark" sides of poker. I guess it just not as exciting.

maybe we should have a contest to guess who the next forum member is to get busted at a club.
  • i say jorge is next. then the girl is all mine!
  • this is why i never go the local club anymore....
    the game is so loose....

not with his tight security; I can see the headlines,"Police raid $10 SNG, net $60 in cash. Unfortunately no cash game players showed up so only the owner was busted."

There are forum members on that list , at least 2 that I can tell of right away, that are frequent posters- so that didnt last long.

Also - The Unit used to operate out of the location on Chesswood - but it must have reopened under different "management"

The club on chesswood used to operate on a street close by...they were in the news previously...*hint hint*

jeez, if you had happened to be there on that night you risked possibly getting a $100-$300 fine. close one, that is scary!
