WSOP 2008 - Main Event Props bet

(I'm hoping this is an ok place to put this thread. If not, feel free to move it)

Anyone interested in taking part in a props bet for the WSOP Main Event? I'm keeping it simple so here's how it work...

$10 Entry - Winner Take All

Signups and payment taken until one week before the Main Event. (I'll post the official end date). Payment in cash to me or online PokerStars tranfer.

When registration closes, we randomly choose an order to draft a 5 player team, one player at a time, using this thread. As players are eliminated from the Main Event, they're eliminated from your team.

The last team standing wins the pot. (If everyones players are eliminated on Days 1a-d or Days 2a-b, the time eliminated according to PokerNews will determine the winner) Payout done by cash or PokerStars transfer at your request.

To sign up, post below and indicate if you're paying through cash or PokerStars transfer.

Prize pool: $70

Entrants: ($ = entry paid)

1. Zithal ($)
2. Westside $)
3. Hellmuth's Mole ($)
4. Hobbes
5. Graham ($)
6. Moose
7. JohnnieH

  • Count me in
  • Me too please.

    I'll pay cash.

Then I'll take Hellmuth with my first pick and hope there's no bad luck. ;)
  • Count me in.
I'll pay cash next time I see you
  • I'll donate.... can people have the same players, how/when will the draft work?
  • From the OP:

"When registration closes, we randomly choose an order to draft a 5 player team, one player at a time, using this thread. As players are eliminated from the Main Event,"

So, one week before the Main Event starts, registration is closed. I, along with a neutral party will randomly determine a draft order. One person at a time, on this thread, each player drafts someone, then it's the next player's turn to draft, and this continues until all players have 5 drafts.

To keep things fair, we'll employ the forward-back method of drafting, which means the last player to draft, drafts twice then we reverse the drafting order...

Ie. If 5 players sign up, the draft order is...

    1234554321123455432112345.

Any draft picks you make now are wasted, so don't do it.
  • I'm assuming you're going to put some sort "draft clock" in place to ensure the draft completes in time for the ME? Something like 12 hour from the last of the previous pick and you have to make a pick or something?

Also I'm wondering if its possible to have a "pre-rank" list that can be submitted in case a player can't make their pick within the allotted time frame? I know for one if we do a 12 hour "draft clock", there is a chance I won't be able to check this forum every 12 hours while in Vegas so just wanted to see if there is a list that can be referred to so that pick isn't forfeited or something.

    Thanks Zithal!
  • I'm in but there really isn't a point to a draft order and a 'team' unless you figure someone is at a signifcant disadvantage to picking 5th. I'm all for a draft order but then I think there should be a points system so even if your player doesn't finish highest, you could still win the pool by having the highest total points for your team just like a hockey playoff pool.

Otherwise, might as well just pick one player and be done with it, like a Survivor pool.

    Point System:

    Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)] * [1+log(10+0.25)]

    Where:

    sqrt= Square Root
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)
    10 = Multiplier

Since the number of entrants is huge, we could probably drop the multiplier.
  • I'm in for a cash buy-in.

Can't we have a live draft on MSN or Facebook?
  • My goal is simple, easy and fun. Tracking points of a team is none of these. (ok, ok, it's probably fun, but not simple and easy) Feel free to start your own prop bet if this is not to your liking. I'll likely take part as long as I don't have to keep track of stuff!

I completely stole this idea from the Tao of Poker who seemed to be having fun with it with a friend as they goaded each other as their teammates fell.

I assumed 1 week before the event is enough time to draft, but if no one else thinks so then, *once registration has closed*, I'll have everyone send me their Top 30-40 picks. (I'll create mine before I read anyone else's) When I generate a random order, I'll go through the lists and work out who picked what players.

No the draft won't really matter after the first few picks as the WSOP Main Event is a big bingo anyway. Still, people have their favorites and this prop bet only works if everyone's team is unique so we need a way to fairly pick teams.

Whatever works for you. I was just pointing out potential problems with the draft since I've done a few of these type of draft for fantasy sports and they have all taken around a week if not longer (although the drafts are obviously longer with 12 managers and 25 players to draft - but also guys on this forum might only check it once a day as well)

I will send money via Stars
  • Hey all,

We'll call Sunday, June 22nd at 11:59:59 EST the final time to sign up, at which point we'll start the draft.

Before that deadline, please PM me your Top 30 picks for the WSOP, with the subject "DRAFT PICKS" and I will not look at it, until I've picked my own.

Still lots more room in this completely random donk prop bet if you'd like in. If you're sending cash via PokerStars, please PM me once complete and I'll add a ($) beside your name.
  • Zithal, I sent my cash payment for this with Buzzzard who will give it to you at the WPC Deepstack tourney.
  • I got it and I've updated the OT.
  • Money sent.
  • For the people that have signed up before the Jun 22nd deadline, teams have been chosen!

Sign up to take part in this event is still open! Simply sign up here and send me ~20-30 names of people you want on your team. And you'll get, in order, players that have not been chosen yet. The final deadline for signing up is this Sat., June 28th at 11:59:59pm.
  • Oh yeah... deadline is up and the teams are posted (second post of the thread on Page 1)! If you see one of the players bust, jot it down here and I'll update the thread.

Hopefully, the people I picked are playing. ;)

  • Self Bump.
  • Benyamine out.
  • Harrington out

    'Action' Dan Harrington Eliminated

Dan Harrington committed the last of his chips on a board of 6x.gifTx.gif2x.gif holding Qx.gifTx.gif for top pair but ran into the pocket kings of his opponent. The turn and river bricked out to send the 1995 World Champion to the rail.
  • looks like he had a 'x' frush...
  • Dang. My first goes down. At least Dan played... was getting a little worried that he was dead or something. :)
  • Negreanu is out, and it looks like this is Watts' day! GL, Watts!!!
  • Rob you have Watts and SPA.

    nh sir.
  • Greg Raymer out.
  • Greg Raymer out.

    Bah!
  • Watts up to 82,000 and currently one of the Day 1B chip leaders! Go Watts!
  • Wes here
    Pescatori is out.
    Max Pescatori Eliminated

With the board reading {J-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} on the turn, Max Pescatori moved all in and Matt Hawrilenko made the call. Pescatori flipped over {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} but Hawrilenko had turned two pair with {3-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. The river was the {10-Hearts} and the Italian Pirate headed to the rail, his Main Event at an end.
  • I've got Davidi Kitai, and he's out too.
  • Thanks for the updates! If you see someone's player, playing a day, let me know and I'll jot down the day their playing so we can keep track on where everyone is and if there were any no shows.
